Well, they're up to 10 and I have no idea why they did that if the deal was set. Maybe concerns about a player or two in the deal?

Wouldn't be the offseason without some wacky deal like this though, regardless of who's involved.

Anyone else think this is just getting pointless? Sure, it's not every day you can get Randy Johnson, but the longer this is dragging on (still no word either way today), the less likely it seems.

(The deal now has the Yanks also getting Kaz Ishii, LA taking Mike Koplove, and Arizona picks up minor-league pitcher Brandon Weeden.)

Two of Oakland's "big three" have been traded. Mark Mulder to the Cardinals, and Tim Hudson was traded to the Braves. Not on the same day, but the effect is the same. I'm very happy, because now the Twins don't have to face them. Well, unless the Twins face the Cards or Braves in interleauge or the World Series...

Horray hot stove!

The big deal's down. LA pulled out of it tonight. Apparently the deal ITSELF between the Yankees and D'backs isn't over yet, but they need to find a new third party...

On the trade that wadn't: This is the time on Sprockets when we ass-dance.

Oh, and the Red Sox have officially inked Matt Clement (3/$25.5) and Wade Miller (1/$1.5 base, I think up to $4 million in incentives too). Miller was inexplicably non-tendered by the Astros, although he DID miss a chunk of last season due to a torn rotator cuff. He's probably no Lowe, but he is effective.

Miller's a good deal for that kind of money, I'd say. Sure, you have the incentives, but he's worth it if he hits them.

I wonder which poor, desperate GM (or GM's) will be lured into the Yanks/D'backs trade...

Let's look into the pool of futility... I'll take a wager and say the Royals get into this one.

I want to see the Cubs get Beltran. Sign the guy to play RF and sit Sammy on the bench until his attitude improves, then move him to left since he can't throw well anymore.

Welp, the trade went through. All that's left is for the Yanks to agree to a contract w/Johnson

And find someone to hold his colostomy bag. ;P

Besides, ya know what it's nice to have but he doesn't have? Cartilage in his right knee. He can't keep it up THIS long. I think they get Randy Fucking Johnson for a year and a half, then Fucking Randy Johnson the rest of the contract.

I dunno, it doesn't look like he slowed down AT ALL.

The only reson his record was so so, was because the Dback sucked wonk.

One thing I have to say about baseball right now....

Well, if I told you that Paul DePodesta (GM of the Dodgers) was being referred to around Cali as "Paul Stupidesta"... would that be enough hintage?

Feh. Better nickname was ex-Jets offensive coordinator (now Bucs QB coach) Paul Hackett. His was "Can't". YOU figure it out.

Anyway, head-explodingly big news. The Cubs need a new RF. Why? Well, Sosa's gone. And take a guess where.

Yankees? Nope.
Red Sox? Naaaah.
Mets? Try again.
Brewers? Uhmno.

The ORIOLES acquired him for 2B/OF Jerry Hairston Jr. and "at least two" minor leaguers. Pending him passing a physical and waiving his no-trade clause, of course. Maybe he makes a fresh start? Dispenses with his corked-up, roided bat image?

Oh, but wait, they might also have to include some other players, like Jorge Julio.

Because when you want pitching, the first name ANYONE should think of is the Orioles.

And indeed he did.

Miguel Cairo and Doug Mientkiewicz are, as well.

Oh. We, uhm, never mentioned that, huh?

Minty Fresh should help them out considerably. Not sure what David Wright's defense is like, but Reyes and Matsui should be fine. 'Sides, who'd they have at 1B when they were contenders recently? John Olerud and His Gold Gloves. And Cairo'll be fine as a bench player. He was over his head last year, but he's still adequate.
