I think it actually did speed up last year on New years eve, and not on the day before.

First time since almost 4 months (July 31)

That was mostly so I could reach 1000 for New Year without having to spree crazy at the last moment (yet another inactivity period made me fall behind on that), and I also thought it'd be easier to score my rare ACS points on December 30 instead of 31 ... didn't hurt to do it though

Althought, I hadn't mastered Advance wars yet. Althought I know the every units basics, and that long match I have together with my sister (we're allied ) did learn me a few startegies.

I typically play as Colleen (because cheap units kick ass). I find a pretty effective strategy to be mirror my opponent's movements exactly, except that when they build stuff, build far more than they do. Pretty easy way to overwhelm people, heh.
