Hi.


^ seen here is the state-of-the-art output of the RPG code I explained in an earlier thread.
What you see is a message box replacement for SMW which resembles the text boxes from games like FFVI or Chrono Trigger, i.e. RPGs.
The gradient colour is done with HDMA; I'm going to have the blocky SMW font replaced by something nicer later on.

Just tell me what you think about it.

What Jesper said That looks really neat. Nice with how far you've gotten on it One thing I wonder is how the text is going to be 'triggered'. Are there invisible blocks placed in the level that, when Mario crosses them display different text at the bottom of the screen?

I'm not sure if it's even possible to do that way, but all I know is that it's looking really good right now

The way I think it works (but can't be sure) is that it pops up at the bottom of the screen when you enter a new level (including those little sublevels). (EDIT: But I don't know how its triggered. I guess you would have to put each one in thru hex?)

And, Blackhole, would it be possible to make it be semi-transparent? It seems large and blocky and covers a fair bit of space. So if it was translucent that would be awesome. Good job with what you have tho!

You might be able to toggle the layer 3 translucency with HDMA.

No it doesn't. He isn't using the same routine. He is just writing stuff to layer 3 (AFAIK).

What happens if you try to use that message box thing in a level that has layer 3 water?

(edit: Does it even allow layer 3 water to be used in a level?)

As for L3 water, it is faded out in the time the message box is displayed. There's nothing anyone could do about it, since it uses the same layer. Transparency is makeable, though (would use up another HDMA channel, because you'd otherwise make the status bar transparent either). Screenies shall follow as soon as I get home (my mom's HD at work crashed, and it seems I am the only one who could try repairing it )

[edit] Ok. Here we go:
- It is up to you whether you halt the game or not during display of the message box.
- The stuff is being written to the screen through direct VRAM access, since SMW seemingly doesn't care about updating anything below the status bar on layer 3.

I should have noticed before, but JJ, those ground blocks need another black pixel in the corners.

Anyway that looks really neat. The font kinda sucks but it's readable, and far better than I could ever do. I wouldn't be too disappointed if it ended up being the final version.

Fonts are by far the most tedious things to edit. You really can't do much with them, and just making the letters look cool is a difficult task itself.
*remembers attempt to make Starfox font in SMW*
...never came out right for some reason...

Anyway, glad that this is being worked on. It would be awesome to have this so that way my (and other's) hack would have more of a story to it.
