Compressed folder? I uncompressed the folder and put it as-is in the 'rom' folder.

I almost got it working a moment ago but it said 'not found' or something.

Don't ask ME what an audit is, Hiryuu said it.

Being with Trapster you must put the ROM files in a seperate folder, which has to be named in a wierd way. If the zipfile was names something wierd, such as "DKSH" or something. Name a folder with "that" name in the ROM folder then unzips all files into that one.

I wish I could be more precise, but I don't have Mame on this computer. ; I do have the darkstalkers ROM (got it from Trapster) so...

And Mame is far from the most unfriendly program I have used, I just read through the documentation and found it out quickly how to fix it for Trapster.

Edit: Hmm, it worked before for you... wierd. I heard that you can have it uncompressed to and stuff but well. I test later when I can.

Basically, you're supposed to put the roms in a Winzip file I think, that what it says here on my FAQ page. *Links it up for you*

Look, I did *exactly* what Trapster just said. The .zip file is called 'dstlku' and the files are 'vamu.03b' and suchforth.

I did exactly what Trapster just said, it appears to be loading some files, then it very briefly comes up with 'NOT FOUND' for a bunch of things or something and closes.

EDIT: And the documentation is about as much help as a spike through the head. It's just a list of command-line prompts, which are no good if I can't even get it working AT ALL.

Hmmm, so I'm pretty sure that you have the zip in the ROM folder, hmmm...

I found something here. I may know why it's not working, check the "Why does MAME report "missing files" even if I have the ROMs?" on that FAQ page. Seems that you need some decryption tables for the ROM possibly.

EDIT: Do you have any files that have an X at the end of it in that zip file?

Not the problem, Tamias. I have those 'X' files it mentions.

I load it and it says it's loading 'vam#' or something, then it quickly comes up with a series of 'NOT FOUND's and closes before I can actually read the damn thing.

WHY CAN'T THEY MAKE A GUI!?

...just you know, but there is severeal versions of Darkstalkers. Seeems like your trying to load the wrong one somehow.

Besides, there is a Mame with GUI. I forgot it's name, but I know for sure that Trapster have that one. It's the same thing, just with a GUI added.

They don't make the GUI becuse it's easier to port and all. I think that's why.

Damnit, I guess a suggestion is that maybe you could download another rom and do the same thing with it and see if it works. If that's the case, maybe it's just that the .zip file doesn't have all the files needed. *Sigh* But I'm gonna agree with Fyxe here, GUI's for emulators are VERY valuable these days. I can't see why the creators of MAME couldn't see that...

EDIT: http://www.classicgaming.com/mame32qa/ Maybe this version will make your life easier, Fyxe. At least, I would HOPE that it does, the FAQ page said it was easy to use, but... who knows if they're exaggerating or not.

Becuse adding a GUI isn't that simple? Command line programs are easier to make, and I wouldn't be surprised if the creators want to easily port it to various platforms, such as Linux and Macintosh.

Besides, there is someone else who had added a GUI. As I said.

Surely making a program to emulate arcade games of all things is much harder than creating a simple GUI...

EDIT: Thanks Tamias, I'll try that if this doesn't work.

EDIT: Alright, I can now watch the opening demo and all!! Problem. No controls, and no sound. Think I might try the GUI version.

Well, wait Fyxe. If you have the Windows version, don't get rid of it just yet. Just download the MAME32. I think it just works with MAME, I'm not completely sure though. All I know that it is a graphical frontend, and with all this mess the non-GUI version is causing, I think it's probably be a LOT more helpful.

Sure, but the same people maybe prefer having it as a command line. I prefer command line for simple programs myself.

I think porting is the reason why it dosen't really have a GUI. It's get harder to port if they use too many "Windows API's(/parts)" as I say it. When your programming you know about thoose things.

Besides, there are severeal "with GUI for Windows" versions, such as the one Tamias pointed out.

Eh, you can't do anything until you inserted a coin. On Mame32 the coin button was 5. I think it was according to the documentation...

Who would *prefer* command lines? It's tedious and you have to remember all of them and GUIs just let you SELECT things.

Becuse they're simpler to make? Besides they aren't far from that tedious to use. At least if you have a easy time working in "DOS".

Then, I don't prefer Command lines over GUI's. It's just that GUI's aren't needed for some things really, besides it's easier to make command line programs than programs with GUI. So that's why my majority of programs really don't have any GUI.

Yeah, Fyxe's right about that. GUI makes things a lot easier, sure you may be more customizable with command lines at times and can do something like moving used .dlls files that couldn't be done on WIndows. Otherwise, it's just a pain because usually people these days don't either know the commands or don't like the command line interface.

In some respects, it's the reason why command line operating systems aren't used too much by people these days, but I'm pretty sure that it'll be around.

Kitten Yiffer: A bit of weird logic in a way. "It's easier to make programs without GUI, so that's why most of the programs that I use have command lines." Yet you said that you like GUI programs better than command lines, unless I'm reading this wrong or there's a typo...

Well, I do prefer GUI's for emulators thought. Althought if I only run one MAME game, then I would just do a shortcut which does the command line things for me.

And Command line will live for quite some time. In Linux you have to use it all the time for example, and Macintosh being a BSD system does have a command line for "advanced users". Hell for being honest I am little disapointed that the command line couldn't do more, and I hate the fact you can't start in pure "DOS like mode" in Windows. It would be needful in thoose times when you have this annoying virus who needs to be deleted. Funny how Windows have an fileprotection thing that protects virsues too...

Tamias: Let's say, I prefer GUI for everyday fun stuff. But Command line for admistrive stuff or for a "Just run this once" programs. Such as webservers... althought I run thoose as service rather.

Well, I can play it once I figured out how to access the menu (tab, for some reason) and check the controls. There's some graphical glitches, and there's no sound, but it's not bad.

I get to see Felicia jiggle about.. ^-^

But I think I should look for a PSX or a Saturn emulator to play one of the newer versions of the game on a console...

LOL, well... I guess that's one of the reasons why they put her in that game. Who knows for sure, she's just a pretty sexy catgirl, that's for sure.

Glad to hear that you got it working at least, but maybe we can possibly overcome that sound problem though... No sound definitely degrades the gameplay a bit, in my opinion. When my speakers died on my computer, I didn't have to will to play any games on it, so yeah...
