How good Colleen was against me :\

14 moves. [shakes head]

At least he did a little better the next game.

I was out of practice that game. You know it and I showed you that the next game.

Chess is one of many subjects that I want to get around to learning about in-depth someday. I like to play, and I suppose I'm decent at it, but I think it would be nifty to actually understand how to use good strategies instead of just winging it.

Same here. That is to say, I suck at the game and haven't really ever won a match.

I only know a few set openings, my defense is pretty poor still...but if I know how to pull someone's strings [like Colleen in example A] then I'll more than likely win.

I'd say middle of the line. Intermediate / high Intermediate...somewhere around there. I really haven't played it enough.

I know the Cat Endgame. Get Cookie's attention, and she'll investigate the chessboard and knock the pieces over so you forget where you were. Everybody wins!

So you play chess with your cats, Rydain?

"I only know a few set openings." Well, how many openings are there when you only can move 1 or 2 steps forward?

Several, when you consider that the first and second move combonations are well over 30. Add on a third move (which is where I stop calling it "opening moves") and you've got quite a few different possibilities. Of course, if you decide to use even more moves as an 'opening', it can go much, much higher.

Bah! I thought you were talking about the very first move. Not the second or third.

Yes, there are indeed a lot of opening, but you only need to know like 20 of them, and you'll be fine.

This is based on the fact that if you never do e4, then you can forget about all the openings from it, and only learn what to do if someone makes e4 against you. If you reply with e6, then you don't need to worry about everything e4 e5/e4 d4 related and forget these too.

That is called pruning, you just have to know what to do against e4 e6 d4 and you have saved yourself from insanity.

Trapster - I haven't actually tried...but considering that board games at our house have been interrupted by Random Acts of Cookie, I'm pretty sure the same thing would happen with chess. We don't even have a chess set here. I need to pick up a nice one at some point.

Uly - Yes, chess is quite interesting (and so is game theory). I'll be more talkative once I get some more sleep, but for now, I found a list of openings and some more basics of strategy and tactics.

@Rydain: Very nice pages you got there, they have very interesting info

I need some sleep too (9 AM here and I haven't sleep all night), I just have to say some facts:

1. d4!! d5 2. Bf4!!

Is the best opening against computers, period. (Don't trust out of book with h4 or such! That's outdated!)

As for defense:

1. e4 e6!! 2. d4 d5!! 3. Nf3/Nd2 c5!!

Computers have problems understanding that, and think that have advantage.

But that should be tommorrow's theme: Computer Chess.

Right now, I'm just giving you this link: Chess is fun! I've based my classes on that page, so that's something

Think I have Chessmaster on here...like 10th version (dunno why it wasn't called 10000 or something). I think the first I ever played was 3000 back on the old 386.

I think I loan a book about Chess, and download a freeware chess simulator. There oughta be an opensourced out there...

I read thoose Wikipedia articles and gladly play against anyone later on. But I want to play some against a computer.

You know that some computers are stupid when they play chess, right?

Their processors are not as advanced as our brains.

I forgot to put "not" in the sentence.

WTF NO. No computer's processor is even close to as powerful as that of the average human.

...you forgot about that chess computer IBM made Trapster?

Then, Chess is quite limited logically if you compare it to real life situations, and if it took great awhile time to make a good computer...

Well Kitten Yiffer, the thing about Deep Blue is that it's much, much stronger than the average computer, and it's also much more specific. It has several terabytes of storage all devoted to solutions to problems in chess.
