What Acmlm does and what I do are two completely different things, and people from both sides will figuratively crucify you if you confuse them.

Basically, Acmlm uses emulators to help him get the theoretical perfect run in a game. I just run through games on consoles as fast as I can.

And yeah, Zelda II.

The *true* speed runs are done on real systems (or in some cases on emulators) using no modifications at all. In other words, I load up a game/rom and try to get from point A to point B in the shortest possible amount of time.

The ones you see Acmlm and that do are for entertainment only - they'd NEVER be considered as real records but they're manipulated to show the fastest possible way (within the game's constraints) to beat the game. Obviously, if your legit run comes close to one of those, you're God.

Whose duplicate account am I? O.o

Last I checked, this wasn't GameFAQs (Where a guy named Sunhawk owns seemingly half the accounts that frequent Current Events).

Colleen: True. Occasionally, though, you'll see a manipulated run passed off as legit, usually due to a misunderstanding (Or in some cases, a nonunderstanding; the infamous Super Mario 3 video is probably the most famous example).

I (and SEVERAL people) thought the Mario 3 run was 100% legit until it was pointed out that Famtasia was used to create it.

Then again, as soon as that info came out look what happened in regards to the creation of a community.

Dunno, I recall hearing that that SMB3 video was beaten, and legitimately at that.

It's definitely been beaten.

I know there's a legit video out there that comes close, but I'm not sure of either of the exact times.

RANDOM ASIDE: I found it amusing that one of the initial reasons for discrediting the video was "OMG HE R TEH CHEATER LOOK AT TEH CLOK CHANGE SPEEDS!!1!". These people have obviously never actually played SMB3 before, because the clock obviously changes speeds during normal play (Specifically, I'm pretty sure it's based on Mario's running speed).

I noticed that too, which made getting star icon + activating treasure ship was harder than it had to be. Still wasn't actually hard, I'm just saying.

Heh, well that SMB3 video did have things which could get improved. So yeah...

I didn't care about that if it was fake or not, it was a impressive look.

I do speed runs now and then, but I never measure the time. I just do them for fun. Such as in SMB.

[06:19.45a] <+Yrs. Truly> hey, DahrkDaiz, the SMB3 timer changes speeds?
[06:20.11a] <%DahrkDaiz> yeah when you speed up (the game takes more time for scrolling and hit detection, rather than updating the timer and status bar)

I never knew that.

Y'know, I fancy myself to be good at videogames, but the reason I don't try speedruns is because I'm a liar... And I have nothing with which to capture video.

That makes sense thought, thought I didn't know that the NES did spend less pritoery on the status bar...

Heh, if it did evenly on both. Slowdowns probably would be more common.

I actually have noticed that about SMB3...when Mario is running really fast, the timer takes several seconds to count down each "second" on the clock...

heh, now when I think on it. I think i'll do a speedrun of Snake rattle n roll. a fake one of course but still. With Warp zones and all.

...though well, to do the game fast as possible you need 2 players. Becuse the boss would be killed faster in the last level and the collecting would go faster too.

37 seconds away. This I KNOW I can make up with better playing (And I just thought of something else which will save me a few more seconds).

Y'know what'd be nice is if there were any good NES emulators with netplay. Then I could play 2p Snake Rattle and Roll with you, Kitten Yiffer. Though, I probably wouldn't do as well as normal since I'm so used to the real NES...

I think most NES emulators have some form of netplay (NNNesterJ has an option), though I don't know how well any of them actually work.
