Those sites that run "top ## best [category] sites" lists should have blacklists too; the main reason for this is to deter sites wanting to be on such a list from using forced voting. The main problem with forced voting is that it defeats the purpose of the list, and can get people pissed off at the site in question for using this bullshit, especially when (as often happens) it isn't executed properly, because if a forced voting system fucks up, it can keep you from entering the site at all. (I almost wanted to post this in the thread I posted about search blacklists, but I don't want that thread hijacked.) |

There's only about 4 ROM sites I visit these days; they're all good sites, with working downloads, etc. that you'd look for, but following the rules, I won't put them in this post Aside from that, there's either sites with torrent links to what I want, or I use P2P programs. There's only one site of the four that even asks you to vote for them, and they can really use it as well, since they're probably 17th or 18th on the toplist of sites, and they're the only ones that have working links The ones I don't like are what BMF outlined. I find most of the time I run into those, I'm never going to get the ROM or whatever other file I want These days, I run into that sort of thing only when I try to get a PSX ISO off of one site, and even then, I do get the download I want. It is annoying, when, in desparation, I look on a toplist for a ROM site to go to, and I choose the top one (interestingly enough, the one that's pretty much always surrounded by a bunch of different symbols). I look on the site, and either they've got little to no ROMs at all, or you have to sign up in their forum to be able to download them. I don't know how many obscure boards I've signed up for to be able to get non-existant ROMs from the site Generally, there's not much good that comes out of them, so it'd be nice to see those sorts of sites blacklisted, but at the same time, in all my searches for ROMs on google, I've never once got a toplist site as a result |

The ROM site I've been using seems to have everything from N64 and before and you don't need to vote (though you do need to sign up but with only liek two required fields). Problem? Lots of popups, and spyware. Which isn't really a problem what with Firefox, so eh... | |||

Here's a better idea. Instead of having the top xx sites block them, just block the top xx sites, because they're all worthless. Then block all the ROM sites for the same reason. It's a cold day in hell that I come to a ROM site and don't see the same BS. 1) "Click all 643457536342 'vote' buttons to enter" 2) I look at the source code, it's the EXACT SAME JAVASCRIPT copied from all the other sites. Sometimes, the geniuses don't even change the code, so all the votes get registered for whatever site they copied from. 3) I enter ROMs directory, without voting. One of the following happens: -I find the system I want, bypass another script, find the game I want, bypass another script, and download it. -I find the system I want, click it, and voila, back at the main page. -I end up back at the main page. -I download it, and it's an empty zip or a zip with an EXE inside. (And yes, in all of these cases I've verified that it was not the result of a protection script designed to catch me bypassing their voting thing. In most cases I'm amazed they knew how to make hyperlinks, let alone copy and paste script code.) 4) If they actually have the ROM, I make a note of how I bypassed the script (*cough*index2.html*cough*) and post it somewhere. This has happened a grand total of zero times. There is one nice site, though. It's like an entire nation full of ROMs. *cough* They have one of those "your rom won't work unless you vote" things. I just download it without voting and it works. Dunno if their script broke or they're just BSing, but either way. (Of course, I wouldn't dream of going there at anything less than full security - Mozilla with Proximitron with a LOT of filters turned on. I wonder how much spyware I'd get?) There was also ONE site that, despite its horrible layout, actually had a decent script. Took a bit of work to get around, but in the end all I ended up having to do was hack their script (*insert Proxomitron plug here*) to grab the proper referrer URL. Of course they only had like 28 files, not all of them ROMs, but they had what I was after. I forget what that even was. (edited by HyperHacker on 11-30-04 02:05 PM) |

Originally posted by HyperHacker I used to visit that site whenever I was looking for a ROM for some old system, like the NES. All their newer links go to those sites that tell you to vote, and I never bothered to go past those; I've got other sites I can go to and get the ROM I want without hassle Last time I got something from there, they had the 'See that number down there? Put it in this box and you can download the file' thing set up. I imagine it would've been easy to bypass; just look at the code for the site, and check what link's opened when you click the button after filling in the number. I haven't been there lately, but last time I made an attempt to download something from that site (an SMB1 ROM), I got some thing about that game not being downloadable, for some reason. I think it had to do with licensing or something Anyhow, back on the topic of voting, if a site actually gives me what I want to get, and doesn't force you to vote, but still leaves the option there, I'll vote for them. If they require you to vote to even download anything, I'll hit the back button a couple times and go back to searching One other thing I've seen with voting is this: 'If you don't vote for this site, your download will be corrupt!' I highly doubt the owners of those sites are going to go to all the trouble of corrupting a copy of all their downloads, and setting it up so that if you didn't vote, you got the corrupt copy I guess it scares most people into voting, but there's been no situations like that, where I downloaded the file without voting, and it was corrupt. I too use the site Hyperhacker mentioned, which generally works well except for certain games which are, for some reason, IDSA protected (This is what Karadur mentioned). O.o. In that case, I just note that this thing I'm using to make this post isn't new... *cough hack wheeze choke* |

Forget voting...I actually went to a site yesterday that said I MUST install the spyware that kept trying to load in order to download ROMs. That's a new low. Wait, scratch that--the site that asked for a PayPal donation in order to download x number of ROMs per month, THAT was a new low. |

Yeah, none of those 'your rom will be corrupt ono' things are true. What, are they gonna keep good and bad copies of every single ROM? Or write an entire script to unzip, corrupt and rezip the file? I think not. Originally posted by Karadur That's just one of those anti-script-scripts to keep people from hotlinking. You shouldn't have to worry about it.
Oh God, not them too. There's one site, I think its name starts with either 'Free' or 'Cherry', and ends with an acronym shared by both a type of storage and a museum. They have HUGE lists of ROMs, and none of them have download links, just this 'ISDA Protected' crap. (Wasn't always that way, either. ) I mean wtf? If your site gets shut down, you don't leave it up and just remove the links, you SHUT IT THE HELL DOWN! And BMF, this, and optionally (highly recommended) this, are the only things you MUST install to download ROMs. (edited by HyperHacker on 12-02-04 03:41 PM) |

Those things are SO dumb... "VOTE FOR US IN THE TOP FOUR HUNDRED EIGHTY-SIX AND FIVE SEVENTHS." The top four hundred eighty-six and five sevenths WHAT? It's like those Top 40 countdowns on the radio...they're just what the radio stations are playing, not necessarily what is popular. |

I remember going to that "cherry" site a while back and seeing that they'd gotten in trouble with the IDSA. I just returned, and oddly enough, the IDSA Protected games do seem to be downloadable. You just need to log in with a free account. It makes me wonder if they moved to some country with very lax copyright laws... |
