The Joe Adventure... well... uhh... dissappeared... in fact, most of my stuff was gone in one day thinks to spyware and stuff... and I scanned for spyware everyday...

Anyway, I decided to make another hack and this time, back up even more often (I backed up The Joe Adventure, but somehow the only thing I could find is the Joe sprite... and only him being small...). I don't know the name or story for this hack... except for the fact Mario starts off in some rocky area... and stuff... uhhh... screenies...

Beginning of level 1.

A bridge...

New Thwimp graphics...

Almost to the midway point.

Suggestions? Questions? Comments? Critisism?

It's too bad to hear what happened to your other stuff Hopefully that sort of thing doesn't happen again.

Those screenshots look really good To me, the new sprite that's in the first screenshot (and others) looks somewhat like Tails' head The new Thwimp looks neat as well. Surprisingly, that dark red background color goes quite nicely with the rest of the level. I like it

Looks very good so far. Nice work

Oh yes because that warranted a post...

And to prevent this from being spam...

The spiny graphics looks wierd. I suppose it's because none of them point up.

Thwimp graphics are kinda cool, but... A rock?

And the foreground graphics are kinda cool. Edges are a little square though... It seems unnatural for it not to be rounded there...

Yes, you should try rounding up the edges. It just seems like it would look better if you did so. And, if this was my set, I would make the palettes a little more varied. Like completely different shades of colors for different objects. Well, maybe not COMPLETELY different, but certainly different shades of brown would be fine.

The graphics you added are pretty good overall, but I think that the collumn on the left in the last screenshot looks kind of weird, kind of gets cutoff in the middle. Also, I think the bridge graphics would look better with some darker shades of brown.

Looks too dark... Brighten up the brown a bit, maybe.

And save on floppy disks frequently.

Hmmm... rounding off the edges could work... *tries it* Looks better, but I have to now rework some things... some objects look like they are floating.

None of the spikes point up. I made it to do that. Looks different that way.

The thwimp is some sort of rock, yes... don't know why...

Different shades of brown... hmmm... *tries it* Can't come up with a good rock palette... the bridge uses the same palette as the rocks and such and messing with the palettes messes up the bridges terribly. Unless someone doesn't mind giving out a good palette that works for both the bridges and the rocks, I am afraid I will have to keep the palette... for now.

The column does look weird... I might just remove it from the ground... or make it a grass column...

I will post more screenshots as they become available... which means me taking a screenshot, which I am right now too lazy to do...

As for floppy disks... they suck. They suck big time. In fact, they screw up my mom and dad's computer for some reason. I will, however, try to send unlocked copies to friends... maybe...

Looks nice. Possibly a bit too brown, but hey. It could work, I guess.

Well, don't you have a palette that isn't being used? It didn't look like they were all being used in your shots. If you're willing to send me an unlocked copy of your hack (I'm a trustworthy guy), I can try to work something out for you.

PS: Adding red to your brown shade can have pleasing results.

Meh, I prefer to have rock be gray with a blue tinge. I dunno quite how to put this, but it looks more like stone than rock... I realize they're the same, but... Ugh. Just... Nevermind.

A reddish rock feels more earthy and a grayish rock feels more stoney. It all comes down to what works best for the set.

Hmmm... adding some red... hmmm...

Rounded edges and a slightly reddish color.

Now I would make it grey, but this isn't stone. Just some rocks...

EDIT: Should I make the bridge a different palette?

Yes, because there may come a point when you want to reuse that set with a completely different palette. We've already discussed one, a more bluish gray rock color. The bridge would look like total junk in that color scheme, provided it didn't have it's own palette.

Well... I thought about this... and I am going to keep the bridge have that same palette. Why? If I am going to make a grey stone level, I don't want a wooden bridge. I could make a stone bridge (which I have started working on). It would be more suitible than a wooden bridge because... the wood and the stone would contrast since one is brown and one is grey (well... it would contrast to me...).

Besides, a stone bridge would be better with a stone ground than a wooden bridge with a stone ground. Rocks and wooden bridges would work as long as the rocks are the color they are here.

I think this set looks VERY good. I do agree tho, that the bridge should have its own palette. Not saying that it doesn't look good the way it is, but if it was a darker brown, or even a gray than it would look pretty cool. One thing that bothered me from the start was the 'trees'. Tthey contrast all the darkish colours with their bright green. Maby darkening them and adding a trunk would make them look better. Ssome bushes would be a good addition, even some rocks on the ground.

Hmmm... rocks on the ground... I like that idea. And I could change the palette of the Stacker Plants (that is what they are called... since I made them, I needed to name them) to share the palette of the grass on the rocks... maybe...

As for the bridge, it shares the palette as the ground, but I am making another bridge that is stone just in case I want to reused the tileset in a blueish-grey stone palette. Besides, the bridge looks wooden in this way, which is exactly what I am going for.

Good hack. I lost all my data too. I'm building a sequel to the last one. It probably won't get far unless there's someone I can send the game to for overworld building.
