Why do note blocks do this, and how can I reproduce it?

Most likely it's just a glitch. Y'know it's possible to glitch the game to produce infinite 1-ups off of a single floating block. My point is SMW doesn't have the most stable code ever.

"Y'know it's possible to glitch the game to produce infinite 1-ups off of a single floating block."

How?

Even if it is a glitch, I still want to know what causes it.

I forget the details, but basically hitting blocks in just the right way would produce duplicates of them right next to them, and it's possible to get a shell stuck in them so if they had coins or 1-ups it would constantly activate the trigger before it changes to a used block, netting lots of 1-ups.

So in other words pretty much what you see in the Super Demo World title screen demo I always wondered what caused that, and now I know About what's happening with that note block, I have no idea There's a slight chance that, going by what Kratos said, there could be an invisible-until-hit-from-below block next to the note blocks That wouldn't explain why the coins are coming out of the note block though

I tried searching for a list of SMW glitches on google, to hopefully find the reason that's happening, but the only site that really had anything to do with SMW was here.

Unfortunatley they don't explain what's happening in that screenshot there, but there's still some glitches that I didn't know about

It's basically exactly what that said for "Block Factory" combined with getting an item such as a shell or p-switch stuck in it. I may have a movie of it being done left over, I'll check when I get home.

While we're on the subject of block glitches...

Has anyone else noticed that you can hit a block below a coin, and Mario will collect the coin (just like previous Mario games), but it leaves a solid, invisible block in its place? It looks like Nintendo either ran into a glitch and abandoned the idea (hitting a coin turned into a used block will still create a coin), or they never created any situations where that could happen, and thus the glitch was never noticed in play-testing. I wonder what it would take to fix that?

I ran across something like that BMF. It's in this part of a level I was doing:

I found it odd that I could stand in the space where the Dragon Coin is after I hit the highest invisible block I redid that space many times, hoping to fix the problem, but now I know all I have to do is remove the coin from above the highest invisible block

Probably for the best anyway. Those patternless hanging coins don't look too good.

You don't need to worry. That was part of a level I did back before I made the choice to scrap the whole thing except for a few good levels, and start over. I've learned a few things since I started the hack with that level in it, so I wanted to start fresh

Those note blocks do the same thing.

When I was playing Demo World I tried getting that to work

Well, I don't know how to fix it, but I would think that it is the coin that is causing the glitch, and not the block. To find out for sure, you should create a Custom Block (from scratch, don't rip any part of any code from another block) that bouces up a little when hit from below, and see if the glitch still happens. If it does, than it should be the Coin's programming that needs to be changed/fixed.

The bouncing up isn't the problem, because the actual bouncing is caused by the sprite. If that was the case, it wouldn't prove anything conclusively by using a custom block.

I'm certain the "bouncing block" sprite is causing the glitch. My guess is it scans the area above the block it was spawned from, and if a coin is there, it replaces it with a blank tile and spawns a coin sprite. Problem is, it seems to be writing block #152 (which is solid) instead of #25. It probably wouldn't be too hard to fix if I knew where the sprite's code was located...

Yep!

SMW's original code has limitations!

What'd you think?
