Or there's the case with someone like Tony Batista, where SOMEONE'S gotta knock them in.

As for team formulae, sometimes it's not so bad to fiddle with it. The Red Sox weren't really winning by catering to superstars... last year, they had more in the way of unity than I've seen recently, and they came DAMN CLOSE to the Series. Now, Nomar's out for lesser-statue guys like Mientkiewicz and Cabrera.

I'm not going to complain about good old Tony. Player of the night in the majors as far as I'm concerned.

Hey... we're .400! ...Now watch us lose. (6th inning at 11 PM... Yup. Rain delayed earlier.)

Francona had better see the light, that Cabrerra will not be able to bat 2nd. His OBS is lower than Manny's average, lower than Ortiz's average.

I mean, for god's sake, just bat it like this

Damon (CF)
Bellhorn (2b)
Ortiz (1b)
Manny (LF)
You could bat Millar (DH) if he's on a hot streak, but if not, then you go with Varitek
If Millar's hot, then you put Varitek (C) here
Mueller or Youk 3B
Kapler (RF)
Cabrerra (SS)

Neo, the Cubs last reached the World Series in 1945. This was the year that many players were off fighting the war, and writer Charley Einstein, when asked which team he thought would win the series, replied, "I don't think either team can win."

But I'd still rather have the Red Sox' history of being a few outs away like in 1986 than the Cubs' history of rarely even getting there. Of the Cubs' 10 World Series attempts, they've only won two of them.

What you do is you root for a team like the Rockies.

As my cousin says, "Yeah, they stink, but it's great when the do win, and they won't crush your hopes ear after year!"

But where's the fun in that?

Nothing exciting ever happens with the bad teams, because the rich get richer and the poor get poorer

and teams like the oakland athetics and the 2001 (or 2002) chicago white sox are used to show that is irrelevant...

Only the A's.

The Sox are an above average baseball team, in both payroll and in skills.

no, i remember the year the white sox made it to the playoffs, they didn't have a very big payroll and didn't have big names on their team. When talk about salary cap came up, people were using them as an example that small teams can still win.

of course, now, they are loaded so I dunno...

EDIT: The White Sox I had in mind are the 2000 White Sox. Take a look at their roster, they didn't have big names at that time with the exception of Frank Thomas and maybe one or two more guys...

OK, in 2000, I wouldn't know that, because I wasn't a sports fan then.

Many of the impact guys who put the Cubs in the playoffs last season were unheralded names -- late season acquisitions Randall Simon and Kenny Lofton were huge, Joe Borowski was solid in the bullpen, Karros, Grudzielanek... they sure were fun to watch.

There it is, good ole Maddox got his 300th win yesterday.

Not a stellar performance, but it got the job done.

The Cubs cold have put up a few more runs for him if Sammy had done something other than K all afternoon.

man...he just had to get 300 against the Giants
But I guess the Giants now are in their funk just like the one they had at the beginning of the season

Anyways, congrats on Maddux on 300. Anyone know who is the next picture approaching 300?

There will be none.

There are a few that are close, and the closest is Tom Glavine, but I don't think he can do it. He needs 41, but I don't know if he has it left in him.

What do you mean there will be none? 300 will be crossed again someday...

If Glavine stays with the Mets, he won't make it. How far out is Pedro? If not him, it will probably be a decade before we see another 300 win pitcher.

300 won't be reached for decades.

Pedro won't make it because of his arm, Glavine is nearing the end, Johnson is 41, Mussina has nothing left, Brown is too old, and then, we're back to nothing.

Glavine needs 40 wins, he plays for the Mets, nuff said.
Randy's too old, needs 60 wins, and he plays for the Diamonbacks, nuff said.

The reason why it won't, is because of the 5 starter rotation. Too many days inbetween pitching, and the uncertanty of the game (sometimes), and then there's injury.

Take this, you would need 20 wins a season for 20 seasons. =\ [/math]
How many times has Pedro won 20 in a season? For that matter, how about Schilling, Santana, Wood, or Prior?

Toxic is correct, practically 0 chance of a new member of the 300 club happening.

300 is a very l33t number indeed.

In other news, Carlos Tosca received the boot (or the sack for you soccer fans) from the Blue Jays. He was screwed before the season started, mind you, but still... I'm surprised it took this long.

well, with any losing club, any coach is going to get axed. I wonder who is the longest tenured coach who hasn't had a decent season in a long time?
