Heian: XD That's a good one.

trans: Not anymore. He's on the DL, and even when he comes back, Hawkins is the closer now. Borowski had one good year, really, and that's it. He was eh with the Astros, I believe.

Dr. Jay -- Actually Borowski was with Atlanta for a little while, and indeed he didn't accomplish much. I think he'd been pitching hurt all this year and if he was hiding an injury from Dusty I'll be pretty upset. If the team asked him to gut it out because their other pitchers (Remlinger in particular) were hurt, that's a different story. I'd be happy to see Hawkins close out the games, but supposedly he likes being a set-up guy and performs better in that role. Maybe the solution is just to have Prior, Zambrano, and Maddux complete all their starts (low pitch counts, please!) and give the bullpen a permanent rest.

Well, sure. They could all throw right down the middle, and a little low to induce ground ball after ground ball, and go 9 innings and only throw 50 pitches.

It could happen.

Actually Maddux completed a game with only 78 pitched a few years ago!

Against Chicago, I'm sorry to report, but the guy's a master of finishing games with low pitch counts. A strikeout-compiler like Kerry Wood will probably neve rbe able to do this.

I wonder what is the major league record for fewest pitches to earn a complete game?

anyways, it is a fact that pitchers who throw a lot of strikeouts have high pitch counts. after all, you need at least 81 pitches to throw 27 strikeouts

Just looked it up, and Baseball Almanac sez 58. Red Barrett threw it for the Boston (now Atlanta) Braves against the Reds back in August 10, 1944. Two-hit shutout, no strikeouts. The opposing pitcher also threw a complete game, giving up two runs on six hits with one strikeout. How long was the game? 1:15. The next closest was 67, back in 1915.

Man, so many records were set back then.

Hitting 400 was easy, pitchers threw in 60 games, only thing that was lacking was home runs.

ah...back then complete games ran in the totals like saves today. that is why 300 saves is considered a major feat back then but is somewhat trivial today.

anyways, all star game to have three 500+ homerun hitters in the same outfield...so, i ask the question, anyone looking forward to the all-star game? and was it really two years ago that it ended in a tie?

Word to that. A 500+ homer outfield.

That is something I definitely want to see.

Two years ago, I remember that game well...

...it was a FARCE.

Eh, at least they actually play the game in baseball's all-star game. And at least home field in the WS is on the line.

Yeah, Red Barrett! (I actually knew that; I should change my nickname to "Baseball Otaku" or some such.)

Back in the days before TV commercials, you'd see some quick games. IIRC, the Giants and Phillies finished a game in 51 minutes back around 1910 or so. That's awesome.

I think it was Vlad, Manny, and Gary Sheffield.

MLB was talking about how that could change though, so I dunno if that will be final.

it seems there are some baseball records that will never be broken ever again. One of which is that completion of a game. The average game now last a little over 2 and a half hours or something like that. And you rarely see games that last less than 2 hours. Thus for a game to finish in 50 minutes is insane...

Another record seems to be record number of complete games by a pitcher in a season. Isn't that record like more than 20? Nowadays, it is impressive if a pitcher can get 5 in one season, more or less 20.

And then there's the obvious ones that you don't even have to describe, just say.

56 and 400

oh yeah... i forgot about that... well, someone who has a shot at .400 probably needs a lot of walks nowadays because hitting consistently is an impossibility. After all, look at bonds right now, he is hitting .359 with only 153 ABs. So, if he has a few 1 of 1 or 2 of 2/3 days and all the walks he gets...he shouldn't have a problem getting to .400

Last year, Bonds only needed something like 17 more hits to get 400...

Kind of scary really. No one has had a legitimate shot really, until Bonds just emerged. Actually, Ichiro was declared the man to break it, but then he went and hit 320 last year.

Every now and again you'll get someone to flirt with .400 for awhile..I believe John Olerud was chasing it during the strike-shortened '94 season.

As far as pitching goes, one of the more telling stats is pitch counts--I believe it was either last year or the year before that Randy Johnson was the ONLY pitcher to throw more than 120 pitches in a game...if memory serves, he did it twice, both times throwing 140+ pitches.

Also note that Cy Young holds the major league record for wins in a career with 521. You're never going to see anyone approach that number the way baseball is today.
