I really need some advice on how to take care of stress. Because whenever I Have to go talk in front of people, I get really nervous and I feel that it is becoming bad enough for my life. And tips on how to not feel stressed toward oral presentations? This is my main problem. Jeez, I hate this.

I remember reading something on the back of either a cereal box or some comic that has to do with this. The guy that had to give the speech was told to imagine his audience in their underwear It sounds quite far-fetched to me, but I won't make any for-sure statements yet. Other than that, there's a few things I can think of. Just be yourself is one. Act like you normally would when you're talking to people on this board or anyone similar. Don't think that just because you're up in front of people that you most likely would only talk to on a one-to-one basis that you have to be perfect. On the other side of that, don't make an arse of yourself either Maybe also let the audience know you're nervous. It'll take a lot of stress off you to not have to be perfect. There's a very good chance that three quarters of the audience would feel just the same as you if they were in your situation. I hated having to do speeches back in public school, so I'd always make sure mine wasn't that great so I wouldn't have to get up in front of everyone in the gym (edited by Karadur on 11-18-04 06:41 PM) |

I have the same problem. I could never stand making a presentation in front of a class. Just be yourself and relax. It only seems like it takes forever but in reality it doesn't seem that long once you get it done and over with.

Believe me buddy, I've got the same problem. This doesn't exactly eliminate the problem, but I try to look at just one person in the front row, and pretend that I'm just having a casual conversation with them.

Going along with what Masterofmario said, if you end up practicing your speech or whatever it is you're doing in front of someone beforehand, ask them to come along and sit in the audience. That way there's at least one person there that knows you're doing a good job, and they may even be able to give you tips, like telling you to talk louder or something. Something simple I always do ... that seems to help somewhat I guess. You don't exactly have to look directly at people, look somewhat above them / behind them, to them they'll be seeing you giving them eye contact when you're not exactly doing that. It's a simple thing, but it's always seemed to help me somewhat. People say practicing the speech / talk with yourself is always a good thing to do too, haven't done it myself though. Mainly, like other said, try to be yourself. (edited by Xeogred on 11-18-04 09:31 PM) |

Yeah practicing your speech beforehand let's you get pronunciations get better for some words that you don't know that well. Also, like Xeograd said that you don't have to look at the people in the audience. Look off at a corner helped for me when I did a speech in my JROTC class last year. It makes you seem like you're looking at the people but really above their heads.

This may be a little difficult, given how old you are, but going to a Karaoke club and getting up on stage to sing works wonders, it really raises your confidence in all other areas NE ways, you need to know your presentation intimately, pepper it with jokes if you like (but that's tough as sometimes they can feel forced). When you talk, instead of concentrating on one point, try looking around, not TOO much, but make it natrual, like you're having a conversation with the entire room (and you are.. in a way). Also, understand that a lot of people will sympathise with you, and about 70% will be thinking "Im glad it's not ME up there. " FInally, don't stress about it. It's not the end of the world if you trip up, and if you make it, be proud at what you've achieved. |

Eh. Most people are probably not going to be paying attention anyways. When you realize that you begin to understand that you can say just about anything and get away with it. Doing something stupid, like dropping stuff, tripping, that will get you noticed for sure.

Even though this isn't everybodies cup of tea, I've found that some of this new age bull plop seems to work. Well, at least the reasonable stuff. I'd really suggest Tai Chi and meditation...drinking tea. Those sorts of things, god knows they've saved me from a stroke or two.

Well, I did a good job on my oral presentation (which was worth 100% for this semester), since I've got a nearly perfect mark (97%). However, I still got this "Romeo & Juliette" roleplay to do, next. I guess that I'll try to use every advice. Will help, alot |
