I've been wondering 'bout this alot lately... when is a boy concidered a man and a girl a woman? Officially, they're adults at 18 or 21, depending on the region they live, but that doesn't make them a man or a woman yet. Being an adult in the form of being responsible and senseful still doesn't makes a boy a man or a girl a woman, since an 8-year old can be responsible and senseful enough to be concidered adult, but he stays a boy. Any ideas that might help me out on this one? Oh, and as the title stated: Leave the crap out. I don't want senseful posts drowned by almost-spam, almost-flames and other crap that some of you usually post.

I personally would say that a man/woman is someone who is responsible enough to be a good father/mother. This of course would mean that they can support a family if they needed to. Also, I think that when someone knows what they want out of life and knows how to do it on top of this, they are mature enough to be a man/woman. And I disagree with you on the 8 year old thing... an 8 year old could be responsible, yes, but not to the extent that they could be an adult. |

I'd say it's when the whole puberty period ends and all the adult parts (including the maturing) are fully grown ... but that doesn't mean a man or woman needs to be responsible and all to be considered one ... a 30 year old mentally deficient man who almost can't do anything is still a man, just not a normal one There's no exact age (I'd say 20-25), maybe not even an exact time a boy becomes a man, since it all comes slowly ... I considered myself a kid until my late teens (like 15-18), and I still see myself as a late teen even though I'm 20, since I look young for my age (me and my grandparents went to see a 16+ rated movie yesterday, and we had trouble getting in because they thought I wasn't even 16 ) ... |

Damn, the adulthood actually scares me... When you are something between 20-25 and live in an own apartment. Then I would consider you an Adult... Legally it's 18, at least here. |

Perhaps you just can't define when someone becomes adult, but you can tell if they are. Sounds a bit odd, but it seems logical to me. |

I like the Native American's way of telling. Put them through an endourance test. If they can't survive on their own, they're not an adult yet. |

Living on your own... then you haven't heard those guys upstairs. They live on their own too, but they're the biggest kids I've ever met, always yelling at each other for the dumbest reason, playing soccer on the stairs, throwing butter and ketchup to each other, constantly shooting plastic bullets with a bb-gun and things like that. About that legal age... I've said before I don't mean that. It has to do with responsibility indeed, but that doesn't come around a certain age. Maybe it's when they think things through, know when to be serious and when they can toy around and take others into conciderations. Maybe it's when they're completely independant, being able to take care for themselves completely. Maybe it's when they've done big deeds or are capable of them and not slacking off from that. Maybe it's somebody who lives to the fullest. I really dunno, but it certainly has nothing to do with which agegroup you're in. Some people never become more than a big kid or keep a "Big Boy"-attitude - of which the name itself already says he or she's nothing more than a boy or a girl, not a man or a woman - , no matter if they're four, fourty four or ninety four years old. |

It's totally subjective, and almost impossible to define. Because your body tells you are an adult when start going through puberty, and society gives you an age, and obligations. It's different for everyone. Prersonally i find myself never being mature enough to ever be an adult. |

Some time after you're no longer a teen, and you're finished growing. It's indescribeable after that...you just know. You'll wake up one day and just be able to say you are. |

It depends on your family. Some consider younger ages maturation (NOT MASTURBATION ), some consider older ages maturation, like 18 or 21.

When such person could, in some essence, be able to live out on their own, be able to fend for themselves, be able to make a family...anything in or around that area...that would be my definition...now that doesn't necessarily mean they HAVE to do that...it just means they have to be CAPABLE of doing so...and a relatively decent age as well...but then some people can be considered that at a very early age sadly...it all depends on how you're raised and what transpires past there. Also, I believe maturity is a plays a definite role in this...I mean no one is perfect...but it does help if you know that you're no longer a kid anymore...and that there are certain things that you can't do full time anymore...no more games...it's time to get serious...and that's basically the coming of age for you right there. So in that right I could say that a few 'adults' could easily be constrained as people that never learned to grow up...and kids that never had a childhood and had to act for themselves...it's all relative. |

It's when you realize that it's possible to have fun without being drunk and life isn't about being drunk. Well.. I sure HOPE some people realize that .. Hi liver problems at age of 30 if not. As it is now though, I go by age to decide adultness.

At the age of 18 considering you're mature enough by then and/or full grown.

For those that concider 18 (or another age, like 21, for that matter) to be what makes one mature, explain why I'm 19 and know I'm a boy, not a man (edited by Kon-Tiki on 03-22-04 04:50 PM) |

I say a man is a man when his word is strong enough that people don't question his word. I'd also say when you're mature enough to realize how to get what you want without compromising yourself. Not backing down when confronted with difficulty.

I think there is no such thing. It's a boundary that's completely man-made. there isin't really such a thing as age, we just add the numbers depending on how many years we've been in existence. For me i think there are people who "act" like kids, and people who "act" like adults. both are in a way capable of acting like the other, but for me a better person would be one capable of integrating the best side of both. I think you become an adult when you decide that you want to be like the people around you. you feel it is your obligation to act like them, and so you do, by fear of being rejected from the group, that is considering that the group in question is composed of other "adults" . thats why if a slighty older person is put in a group with alot of young people, he will tend over time to act a bit like them. I guess part of being an "adult" is also that you must never go back to being the kid, an so people remaind in the "adult" personality or.. atleast... most of them do... in the end it's just an act.. like everything else... For men and women it's whenever puberty ends, I believe is the technical way of putting it. But even then some men and women can act very un-manly and um-womanly like... |
