I am curious as to the status of flood protection on acmlm boards. This is inspired by a recent attack at Infinines which actually ended up with SyntaxLegend getting fed up with his board and closing it. Several users from a rival board registered on his board and began flooding with offensive thread titles/threads in an attempt to kill it. They created thousands of posts in a short period of time. While that didn't actually do anything significant, it did result in Syntax shutting his board down at least for a while it seems. My question is, is there any way to effectively lockdown this flooding behavior. I'm not an admin or anything so I don't know much about the capabilities. One or two spammers is manageable as you can ban them and trash/delete their threads. In that instance they had 6 to almost 10 users spamming relentlessly. If they'd get around to banning one or two, a few more would show up. Well if there isn't I think there ought to be a "martial law" type feature that limits the number of threads posted in X amount of time for all users, and would route new registrations to admins for review before posting is accepted. Any thoughts? |

phpBB has this feature that stops users from posting *variable* seconds after the last post. maybe you can look into it.

Uh, ipban them? If they are just 6 to 10 you can easily ban them. Another thing is that in the new acmlmboard version people can only have one account per email so if they want more accounts they have to register more emails. I think that's how it goes now anyway, or I just pulled that out of my ass. According to the version info you have to get a verification email from the board before your account is created and any admin can lock down registration.

Thought even if that solves alot of problem, other people have to either take some hacks for doing that or wait until this version of Acmlmboard get's released. They are planning to release a newer version of the Acmlmboard I heard but don't hold your breath. |

I think for the new Acmlmboards (and the version available by Erk) the *Submit - Back - Submit* trick has been fixed, but I may be incorrect...? Also I'd say the best way to counter mass-registration issues is to simply include email account verification, which this board now has and I'm assuming the next AB to release will include the feature. |

maybe i timer can be introduced for every 5 minutes, so you cant post more than once in a 5 minute period.

right, I posted 101 times legitimately in 1 hour on my board... like I want to post 12 times an hour at max.... that's just dumb.... perhaps you could IP ban like has been said.... or disable registrations once an attack starts.... but yes, this problem will be greatly alleviated in newer versions of AcmlmBoard.... I would guestimate that by the end of the 1st Quarter of 2005, we should be able to release a 1.9 board... .I don't have alot more of my stuff to add at this point... mostly just Post Records, User Views, and stats.php And then various aestehetic enhancements like where Acmlm just decided he didn't need to put $boardtitle= in about 90% of the pages on the board... And then there are no links anywhere to like 50% of the usefull features and code found in the board, shit like that |
