Apple Introduces iPod Photo Question is: Do we really need our music-players to carry photos around for us? |

How many of us want to watch a movie on a resolution roughly half the size of a TV screen's resolution? How many of us are going to watch Badger Badger on our iPods? How many of us that have a video-capable music player have ever used that feature outside of demoing to friends? If you're the kind that do not want color screens or photos, there are still three alternatives just from Apple alone, and hundreds of other alternatives. That said, I'm not one to regret a Video iPod with a bigger resolution when it arrives. But what Apple hopefully have realized is that most of the 'content' is in DivX, Xvid, WMV, Real Video and other such formats. QuickTime might have a big market share, and it definitely works with the standards such as MPEG-4 and will work with new stuff like H.264 (the HD-DVD codec), but it can't play all of the real world formats. |

Well, now, Jesper, don't misunderstand me. I'm not against the new iPod, I'm just wondering how useful it is. I might actually get it, though, seeing as how I just inherited 40000 NOK and I need a new portable music player. Still, though, you can't help but wonder how useful it really is.

The photo thing would be incredibly useful for some users. Let's face it, some people would love to be able to show somebody their photos anywhere, anytime. My mother, for example, who takes photos wherever she goes, at all parties, etc, pretty much is constantly having friends over and showing them the photos on the TV... she'd prolly love to be able to carry an iPod around and show her friends when she's meeting with them for lunch and stuff too. It is probably only marginally useful to the hardcore geeks, but you have to remember that the hardcore geeks aren't the people Apple will be marketing to... |

Like I take that many photos. Could be useful but i'm not that type who goes around showing my photos to other people. I mail/send them over.

See, I don't have anything to take photos with. But I can see how this feature would be handy for all the digital camera addicts there are out there. And there seem to be a lot of them, judging by the way my mother and her friends swap digital photos... |

let's throw out the whole photo feature and look at the fact that it has 15 hours of play time, that's a lot more than any current iPod out right now. The one cool thing is the album art if you're big on that it's cool to have the album art pop up when a song turns on. N E Ways, it's way too expensive compared to other iPods and I just don't see it selling like the current iPods cause the features it offers just aren't worth the extra 250 compared to the same music player without pictures that's only 300.

... Seven... thousand... six... hundred... Canadian... dollars... SomerZ... BUY ONE. I think it beats having to pull a picture of your baby out of your wallet. Now you can just say "Sure, which one do you want to see? I have 400 of her and another 600 of my wife." |

It's been ordered. iPod Photo 60GB with my name engraved on it. Should be here in 1 to 2 weeks. (Yeah, I know, so I change my mind quickly ) (edited by The SomerZ on 10-28-04 06:27 AM) |

This is a good idea, actually. There's a greta chance that someone may actually make a movie player for it, like iPod Linux. Provided, it may have more support for different filetypes than an oficial video player for it, but still interesting nonetheless.

Well, I just watched Steve Jobs's entire press conference regarding the release of the new iPods (Photo and U2), and he won't go Video because he feels video is a step in the wrong direction (video poses problems with copyright-issues (as oposed to pictures, which are your own), the fact that there are no videos available for a machine like that at the moment, and that the screens would most likely be too small). Also, he expanded iTunes Music Store now, to 9 European countries. And in November it will come to Canada, as well. Still no go for neither Norway nor Sweden, though, so if I want to by music from Apple, I'll have to go to Finland.

Oh, it's coming to Canada finally? I figured Lithuania, Iraq and Gabon would get the store before us. |

Seems to me Apple doesn't like having to deal with the smaller currencies, since it's coming to a lot of EU countries, but not to Sweden and Denmark (non-EMU countries). So far, you can find iTunes Music Store in only three countries, USD, Euro, and Pound Sterling. And then Canadian Dollars in a few days.

Does it play videos? If so, then it might be worth having. Really, though, porn is the only use for something like that. Other than that, how often do you need to look at a picture right away or want to watch movies on a really small screen? I just wish the GBA had a better sound/video system, then I could just use it as an MP3/video player. I guess it'll probably be possible with the DS, but GBA SP is so much smaller. |
