| So I went to see this movie on Saturday night, The Grudge. You should all see it, by the way, it's fun. Anyway, I was surprised, as ever, to see children as young as 6 months in the theater. Granted, this happens pretty much all the time, but for me, it's becoming somewhat of an annoyance. Not only is my movie going experienced tarnished by the various spurts of crying, but there are children laughing and talking during important parts of the films. And to make matters worse, the parents never want to miss the movie, so do they take the children from the room and console them? Of course not! That would be convenient. Instead, they leave the child miserable in a room that's incredibly loud, dark with bright flashes, and full of people they don't know. How wonderful for them. I was just wondering if it's only me, or do other people find this as annoying as I do? Just curious...And another thing, to make it a little more dynamic, do you think exposing children to this type of environment at such a young age impacts their psyche, and in what way? | Welcome to the year 2004, can I ste...[coughs]...take your coat please? It's probably not the best thing for most little kids to see something exceptionally violent, but you know, nowadays, everyone and their kid seems desensitized to it. I probably wouldn't bring babies to something like that, but it's not like I'd be extremely restricting to say a ten-year-old who asking for it (unless it was really really bad). I guess it's just how we live nowadays, nothing like what it was say a decade or two ago. Might be one of the things screwing up a kid, but you know, there's a million and one things that a parent can do to screw up a kid, and with things the way they are nowadays, you'll inevitably screw up once. So basically, that would be an easy answer to it in order to take someone 'underage' to see something like that. Alternatively, though, I guess it helps them out later in life if they don't become obsessed with scary movies and some their ideals. Oh and of course, like it'd be easy to corral kids that are laughing in the middle of a scary movie that aren't paying any attention when everyone else is trying to watch. That's always fun to deal with no matter what the movie. :\ So I don't really know if there's a right or wrong answer, especially nowadys, but I kinda figure that it would be whoever's responsibility if it's not the child's and whatever comes of that. That reminds me of when I was seeing the first Harry Potter movie at the cinema. As you may or may not know, when a movie comes to Sweden, we add subtiles instead dubbing the character's voices (unless it's a movie for kids or something). Anyway... There was a mother and a child there as well. Appearently, the kid couldn't read, so the mother read the subtiles to him for 5-10 minutes until she realized that she might disturb the others. Guess if it was annoying.  |

| I barely go to the movies anymore because of the increased amount of people who seem to forget they're in a room full of people who actually might want to see the movie they paid for -.- I honestly don't get why people need their cellphones on during a movie, or why their baby has to be in a situation like that. If you can afford a night out, surely you can afford a babysitter? The only advice I have for you is sticking to later movies, so you can atleast avoid the children. People should be taugth common sense in class these days >< |

| I don't have any insightful comments into the effects of scary movies on a child's fragile mind, but I can tell about this: My family and I went to go see Spiderman 2 since it had just came out again in the cheap $1.50 theater. Usually I have to go tell someone to focus the screen, or that they have the sound way too loud, but luckily this time neither of those things happened. What did happen was fairly annoying though -- a woman sat in front of use with three children, and only one of which actually realized they were at a movie and watched it. One of the other two insisted on asking his mom random questions about whatever  was on his mind, while the youngest one decided that instead of watching the movie, she would stand up, turn around, and watch me. Obviously this was distracting. Then the baby started crying behind us...Typical of a cheap theater, I guess.  |

| As annoying as it may be, at least I know I'm not alone in this tragedy! I just wish there could be some sort of inforcement for preventing at least babies. I mean come on, who has successfully taken a baby to a movie and not had it cry. Get a babysitter, that's what they're there for. That reading of the subtitles had to be horrible, I can't even imagine, and I definitely don't like kids who turn around and stare. For some reason, they always remind me of The Omen boy. *shudders* Scary. |

| I remember seeing AvP, with this family to the left of me that had a couple of kids, probably 2 years of age and younger. I mean, for my age (us in general) the movie wasn't really that gory, especially compared to the other Predator and Alien movies, but wasn't it a tad intense for a toddler? If I were that age, I don't think I'd like to see such a realistically depicted mother alien ...  But yeah theaters as of late just aren't that great anymore. Some people just can't shut up during movies, some people just have to make dumbass [stupid comments they think are funny] during the movies. This is especially annoying when I'm seeing something like LoTR, Spiderman 2, or some big hit blockbuster. I also don't understand why people clap. Celebration I guess? Most the time when people do this I just kind of laugh cause I just think it's really retarded and pointless ...  |

Welcome to Montreal, where MOST people take their viewing seriously.  I rarely go to see movies period, but if I go I tend to wait until a couple of weeks after the movie's been released. That way you avoid the rowdy opening weekend crowds as well as the tiny crowds where troublemakers do tend to flourish in. |

| I haven't been to a cinema in ages to watch a film, I hate being with people who are morons or bring babies or generally don't shut up. When I do watch one, I go to a cinema in London which is, relative to other cinemas in London, OK, since it's always cold there and less people than normal go. And I usually go a few weeks after the film has been shown. And I have never been in a cinema where people clap. Guess I only watch bad movies. |

| Movies can affect kids, but that's not the annoying part about being in a theater with a bunch of little kids. If they aren't talking, they're complaining. If they aren't doing either it's because they're babies and can't talk yet. So what do they do? I stopped going to the theater about five years ago, I think. Probably the best decision I've ever made. EDIT after Cy's post: Yeah, and personally I don't think any kid under 3 should be allowed in a movie theater, period. | As long as the clapping is deserved, it's kinda fun. I mean, since plays and theatrical productions aren't very widely popular, I guess movies replaced that as a form of entertainment so people have to involve themselves someway. I definitely agree that children under 3 should not be allowed in a theater. I mean come on, what 2 year old understands the plot of ~any~ movie, let alone one PG-13 or higher. they might enjoy "pretty pictures" but let's face it, The Grudge sure as heck didn't have any "pretty picutres." |
