Ok. If I wanted to translate a japanese game, I'd use hex editor. So if i edit the text in hex, will it turn out japanese in the game(like is the text default or w/e on japanese). Or would it turn out english? I have a friend who can read japanese so I don't need a translating book or w/e. I just need to know if all I need is a hex editor. If there's anything you need, please tell me. | |||

You should run a search on that type of work as it's quickly becoming common knowledge how to do it. Generally what I think it involves is first finding out the formatting for the text, and then find lal the text in the game. Dump it to a file programmatically, and begin translating. You need to make sure that the Japanese font, i.e. the tiles that the Japanese characters use are changed to English tiles. Some japanese games will already include the English (roman) alphabet but I wouldn't count on it. Some consideration has to be given to vwf, that is, variable width fonts. Some characters obviously look better with a smaller width in English. Like, W vs. i here. Do you really want i to take up as much space as W? Remember that Japanese characters generally take up the same amount of space, as though they were part of a square grid. Thus, vwf is something you might have to hack in 1. Because it saves screen space, 2. Because it looks better. |

Originally posted by Majin_Hacker You would need to find the font, and the hex values that match up with them. There is no standard for what value = what letter. Copy the text down, so it can be translated, open up the rom in a tile editor, find the font, and replace as you see fit. That's how I would do it, not sure if that's smiled or frowned upon. After you are done, you can make a table to note the changes. How the DTE is done, I dunno. |

Originally posted by Majin_Hacker Which game? And actually, it isn't THAT complicated. First, open the ROM in a Tile Editor. (Or NESticle, if it's a NES game. That's the only reason you should ever use NESticle, though.) Find the graphics for the japanese characters, and change them to english letters. Now, open the rom, find the text you want to translate, jot down the random letters now in place of the japanese characters, and do a search on these in a hex editor. Then change the garbage into what you want the text too say. |

Originally posted by Majin_Hacker many japanese GBA games nowadays are coming with english tiles. However, they probably require more data to be able to use. You can, just move the tiles to where the japanese ones are and go from there. |
