I am becoming very very envious of your work (mainly the programming). And I think I'm becoming a little more motivated me to actually take some time and learn Snes ASM (I am very very envious ).

Btw BMF, do you think I should learn 6502 ASM first, or will that not benifite me when trying to learn 65816 ASM (In other words, should I just start out with 65816 ASM)?

Well, consider the fact that I coded most of that in one or two nights, on-the-fly, without documenting anything (another habit I have to change), and left it in a less than half-finished state...I honestly don't know where I left off, so I'd have to retrace the code and figure out what it does and doesn't do. It's not beyond my abilities, of course, it's just not something I want to think about right now.

Aioria: yes.

I am guessing that when you finish this hack you'll make a second one with all the skills you learned here without the troubles you had before of learning how to do some things, and you'll be able to add all the stuff you wern't able to do before as well as take it in a different direction, like Dhark Diaz did with Mario Adventure and Luigi Coin Quest.

I love this new demo. I had never played the previous demo but this one is very cool! The only problem that I have incountered is
< spoiler >

When I entered the 'base' I completed all the levels in there and the sky levels, but now when I try to leave the 'base' it wont let me. What I mean is I can't go back to Yoshi's House area. I had to restart (BTW, I didn't use the SMO Patcher you provided, I used LIPS).

< end spoiler >

Anyway, everything else is cool and I loved your underground BG and 'info signs'. Your status bar is quite awesome aswell (although I really dont like the SMB3 "M" that replaces mario's name. I am currently trying to replace it with SMB1 head but 4 colours is restricting). Good luck with this hack and keep up the good work!

Ah.. you can't go back to World 1 from the Base? That's annoying.. I don't want to have to start over to find the levels I missed.

Well, It only started happening after I beat the sky palace or whatever its called.

Also, is it possible to open the locked door in the base in this demo? Ii have only like 15 or so levels found.

OK, how do you beat level 1C: Cooling Systems? When I go to the end and try to enter the door, nothing happens. Am I just stupid or something?
EDIT: Well, it turns out it was BMF being stupid You can only enter the door from the leftmost part of it, and I tried to do it from the middle. You should probably change that, it really makes no sense to only be enter it from the left

I also found a minor bug, some of the text message end up under layer1. I have version 1.0 (U) of the rom, 524 800 byte.

Atma X: Well, 6502 and 65816 are really similar...it depends on whether or not you want to start out with 6502 and learn the new and changed 65816 instructions later (a relatively trivial matter), or just dive in and learn the whole thing at once. You may as well do the latter if you don't plan on hacking any NES games.

Someguy: When this is done, I plan on taking an extended hiatus from hacking of any kind.

Keikonium, hhallahh: Er, I really shouldn't have put that restriction in place yet. I did that because it would seem silly for Mario to be able to walk back to Earth and get Yoshi, when he's supposed to be on a giant fortress flying through space trying to rescue Yoshi. I do plan on allowing players to eventually go back to the beginning, of course, but via a different route (probably involving that pipe I seem to have forgotten about on the Green Valley map). Perhaps I should release a slightly-updated demo...

And no, you can't unlock the door yet. That's for the next release.

max: Thanks for pointing that out. I actually made a custom door block that doesn't have such a limitation, but it was after I had already made those levels, and I didn't even think about going back to update them.

Also, where does the text go under layer 1, and what emulator are you using? I tested all the messageboxes in ZSNES and Snes9x, and didn't encounter any problems.

Well, I don't really hack NES games, but I learned 6502 ASM before jumping into 65816 ASM. Doing the first is a whole lot easier to do that than just jumping into the latter. Doing 6502 first, you will understand the basic commands (such as LDA, INC, STA, etc.) and then go on to using the more... complex stuff (RTS, JMP, etc.). I still don't know all the extra features...

And ASM is not hard. Finding the data, though... is hard...

Y'know... It occured to me that you could just change to the castle tileset through the "Change GFX in header" dialog to get the castle tileset specific objects available for use, then make use of blocks set to act like the big boss door, as it doesn't have this problem. If this won't work, could you explain why?

Oh...yes, I suppose that would work, too, as those levels do use the castle object set. Eheh.

[EDIT]
Waitaminute, I already made doors just like that, and used them in the other fortress levels...I just used the wrong tiles in that particular level. Arrg!

And i'm quite sure you finish this before Acmlmboard v2.0.

EDIT: ok, my browser had cached the second page for some odd reason and was showing it to me as the third, making most of this post totally worthless.

Anyhow, on to the part about the training mode time trial..I've managed to get 1:03, but I can't get anything lower; anyone managed to break that?

Yea.. you have to get below 1:01, as pointed out earlier. It takes some practice, and savestate use, but here are a couple of pointers that I remember for shaving crucial seconds. The best tip I have that isn't completely obvious:

Before you start the race, get a running start from the left edge of the screen. This will allow you to be in "sprint" mode when you jump over the first barrier, and allow you to clear the second one without trouble. If you're really good, you can duck through the next area and stay in sprint mode, but.. that's not necessary.

You don't really get anything for beating the race, though.

One other thing: You only really need to trigger the bottom note block, then as long as you avoid the upper right one you can shave a few seconds off your time.

Hum, I got both of those as, but I'm still just shy of 1:00 . In terms of techniques, it saves time to hold the last block you grab of the wall of blocks rather than pick up a new one in the pile below the spring. Also, if you hurt yourself instead of coining the enemies, it's slightly easier to make it through the hole in the ceiling. Plus, there's the spin jump off the goomba slide to get over the plant. Hope these weren't too obvious...

Just out of curiousity, what's the reward for clearing it in under a minute? If you feel that I should find out for myself, that's fine, too

Just wanted to know if it's worth the spent time, heh, as I have several other deadlines that are getting pretty threatening.
