He still shouldn't be going into the stands and knocking down people with punches.

The fans deserve to be blamed but if you're hit with a cup of beer, you DON'T go up into the stands and go after the guy. Yell at him, complain about it, anything - but don't spark the brawl. I say 15 games minimum.

Artest is a hood like 80% of the NBA players. They let these irresponsible players into the league and toss a ton of money at them and expect them to behave appropriately. It doesn't always work.

You honestly expect anyone to think rationally in the heat of the moment? Hell no, Shaq, Dale Jr, dropping F-bombs everywhere. I don't agree with Artest charging after a fan, but I don't agree with fans attacking the players.

(edits appropriately)

I still haven't seen how it started, but I read. Who'd'a thunk it... Artest the GOOD GUY?

We've gotta see the NBA take a page from various European soccer leagues. Next few Pistons home games, EMPTY ARENA. There's no reason the fans should be able to get on the court.

yup, I turned on ESPNnews and caption read along the lines of "pacers/piston game called after brawl" anyways, it appears to have all started with a nasty foul ben wallace received. He retailated and we had a bench clearing fight. After that was done, Artest lay on top of the score table, beer thrown at him and then you know the rest.

i was kinda surprised that Larry Brown attempted to talk to the fans but he gave up when he probably realized it was futile...

I'm sorry, it's ridiculous to think that you can't have any self-restraint when you're an NBA player getting hit in the chest with a cup thrown by a fan. And what's Artest doing charging that moron that was on the court and trying to break his fist in the moron's mouth. Hell, what's he fouling Wallace so hard when you're up 15 with under a minute left. I say it's time we put Artest in street clothes the rest of the year. 10 games won't do anything; they gave him that last year, and look at him now.

I really wish Wallace wouldn't have gone after him though...despite totally having a reason to. He's normally a mild-mannered fella that lets his game do the talking and now everyone's probably gonna think of him as your typical NBA thug. I would have just waved my 2004 championship ring in Artest's face and walked away.

But yeah, I'm embarassed over what those morons in the stands were doing last night. I'm embarassed over how people are referring to them as Pistons fans. They're giving real Pistons fans like me a bad name and it even has people thinking so impossibly unreasonable as to suggest playing their home games in an empty house.

Well, the Pistons/Pacers is hands down the premier rivalry of the NBA now, and their next game is Dec. 25 at Indiana. I'll be the first to predict no further extracurricular activities in this series, but expect ESPN to hype it up like it's the second coming of "Playmakers" or "Season On The Brink".

I doubt it, but they have already promoted the fact that they have the game on SportsCenter.

I will say this, something must and should be done about this. The fans get no free pass on this. Unfortunately for the ~18,950 that weren't involved in the fray, they're gonna suffer the same punishment as the asses that instigated this.

As for the "self restraint," fans are attacking the players, and you don't know their intentions. And as I've already said once, how do you expect anyone to thoroughly think this out in the heat of the moment? It's a judgement call, and the players made the decision they thought was the best. Keep in mind, they weren't looking for a fight. They were winning, Wallace was pissed, the fans were pissed. All Artest is guilty of is a foul on Wallace, that's it. The fans in that arena crossed the line in this case, not the players.

And don't think Artest would've been the lone man to do this, as it has already been told by Stephen A. Smith, Shaq would've done the same thing, as I'm sure everyone else in that exact same situation would have. Do I like it? No.

This is what needs to happen. File charges against those:
1) that threw sucker punches
2) that went after players, physically

For the derbris giving fans:
1) ban from arena for a month
2) I can't think of a #2

As for the players:
1) fine those involved
2) suspend those that threw punches, or tried to add fuel to the fire

Will any of this happen? Probably not....

Ha ha, Artest needs to work on his punches.

The two guys he took on didn't even go down. He had to tackle the first guy, and the other one just absorbed it.

Wallace gets the least out of the four guys, that's pretty obvious to me. Artest should get the most, then either O'Neal or Williams. Bit of a push there.

O'Neal's running punch on the guy Artest couldn't knock down = OW.

that is the saddest thing I've heard of in a long time....

those fans don't deserve to be there.... and those players don't deserve to play anymore... in my opinion...

that is almost as bad as hockey parents fighting each other....

IT IS JUST A GAME!!!!

i think that was a different guy...because the footage of O'Neal, there were a lot of people gathered around looking away...where as Artest was 1-on-1...

Wasn't O'Neal the one who ran at the guy? I thought it was based on what was said when I was watching the various replays.

Either way, one of them did that and one of them decked a guy in the stands.

i know the scene you were referring to...

but anyways, what is true regardless of what footage is seen is that everyone is at fault here. No doubt about that. Yes the fan should not have thrown something at Artest but at the same time he should haven't gotten retailiation. Yes, Artest is a victim in getting something thrown at him but he shouldn't have run up into the stands, etc.

Rumor has it that the suspensions are in, according to a few sources...

Ben Wallace gets 5 games. He got off LIGHTLY.

O'Neal and Jackson? A whopping 20 games each.

And for Mr. Artest? No less than 30 games.

Indiana's season is TOAST. They have *6* healthy/non-suspended players right now, but still managed to only lose to Orlando tonight by 3.

... They are in Detroit's arena, who do you think they are, Laker fans? How about Celtic fans? Or let me guess, they're actually misguided Red Wing fans with nothing to do. Huh?

Well, they were rooting for the Pistons, so I guess that makes them "Pistons Fans" by definition, but no one that I would consider a "fan" would participate in such a thing that will be so detrimental to the team's, and the whole NBA's, reputation.

I guarantee you that not a single person in that crowd had any intention of hurting any Pacer player, until they went into the stands. Throwing a cup of ice is pretty tame to be considered an attack. The thought process of whether or not to go into the stands should never even occur. There just is no excuse for a player to ever go into the stands, and certainly not over some idiot throwing a cup of ice that would easily have been handled by security anyway.

Artest went after the wrong guy, too. I hope the first guy he attacked files a civil suit for 100% of the profits from Artest's new album.

I don't feel sorry for the "fans" who ran onto the court, though. That's when the fans' intentions become questionable, and they don't belong there any more or less than the players belonged in the stands.

And don't think Artest would've been the lone man to do this, as it has already been told by Stephen A. Smith, Shaq would've done the same thing, as I'm sure everyone else in that exact same situation would have. Do I like it? No.

I'm not going to speculate on who would have done what in that situation, it's totally meaningless to anyway. But I think Stephen A. Smith and that whole crew really made idiots out of themselves after that game by pretty much saying that the Pacers did little, if anything, wrong by going after the fans. It's one thing for me to disagree, but I think it's just truly ignorant to put all the blame in one place with an event like this one. Smith is just some Philadelphia guy that'll do anything place another city's fans on a lower pedistal than Philly fans and he's probably still bitter over last year when he picked the Lakers to sweep the finals.

This is what needs to happen. File charges against those:
1) that threw sucker punches
2) that went after players, physically

For the derbris giving fans:
1) ban from arena for a month
2) I can't think of a #2

As for the players:
1) fine those involved
2) suspend those that threw punches, or tried to add fuel to the fire

Will any of this happen? Probably not....

I don't mind any of that, although I don't think a monthly ban would do much. There's no way they'll catch all of them anyway.

Ben Wallace gets 5 games. He got off LIGHTLY.

Lol, Bill Laimbeer was saying on the local broadcast after the game that Wallace would "probably get 1 game and a fine". Not derisively, either. Bill's a funny guy.

.....Shall I unveil the real suspensions?

Detroit:

Ben Wallace - 6 games
Chauncey Billups, Elden Campbell, Derrick Coleman - 1 game, $35,000 fine

Indiana:

Ron Artest - 72 games (suspended for the season)
Stephen Jackson - 30 games
Jermaine O'Neal - 25 games
Anthony Johnson - 5 games
Reggie Miller - 1 game, $35,000 fine

............Wow. Talk about putting your foot down. Bet you we won't see crap like this again for a long time.

I'd say that Indiana would go after Vince Carter but who can they deal? They're screwed. 8th place at best in the conference.

I'm both very shocked and satisfied over the durations of the suspensions. Didn't think the NBA had the balls to lay it down like this, but I was wrong. David Stern deserves a gold star on his forehead.

I think Indiana's down. Short bench for the next 25 games at any rate.

Dude. EASTERN CONFERENCE. They'll be fine if they can maybe go .400 while O'Neal's suspended. Then it's but five more without Stephen Jackson. Artest? Well, they ARE screwed without him, but not that bad.

The Pistons organization needs to show some onions and bring the SHITHAMMER down on the fans who did that. Ban for life for anyone who instigated, pull some tickets... I still like my empty arena idea.
