So, who remembers this game? Besides being the game which pretty much put Rare on the map in terms of game developers, it also has a reputation as being one of the hardest NES games ever.

Yet, I've gone through the game on an NES, completely legit (All 12 levels, no five-toad code), without continuing. Indeed, I'm in the process of going through it again on an emulator, recording it and adding commentary to it (This is basically something of a fad right now on another message board I go to; it started with a Ghosts N Goblins video) so that people who have never gotten past level 3 can see how to get through the rest of the game.

Keep in mind that some of the other classic "hell is for NES players" games continue to kick my ass to this day--the first Ninja Turtles, Bayou Billy, the aforementioned Ghosts N Goblins, etc.

So is Battletoads really as hard as its reputation suggests? Less to the point, would anyone here be interested is seeing these videos I'm making (I still say the most fascinating thing about it is how low my voice is)?

So yeah, discuss Battletoads.

Compared to the arcade version, the NES version was nothing and keep in mind, the third level is harder if you don't use warps. :\

But can you beat it this fast?

Everyone is like "OMG U NEED THE WARP IN LEVUL 3 TO SURVIVE!1111". The funny thing is that the warp is so close to the end of the level as to almost not even matter.

And no, I cannot beat it that fast. I can beat it legitly, however, which is something those people probably cannot do (It even says as much on the FAQ page).

Oh yea...trust me...I let a friend on this comp who travelled here from downstate and I told him I had a ROM of Battletoads and he jumped on it the minute I said it.

Minute he hit level 3 and tried to beat it full...he had to have used 100 saves and reloads. 40 must've been at the very end. You need very good reaction time and the method down pat if you want to do it.

"The method" is a simple down-up-down-up pattern for 20 walls!

And I personally think if you're good enough to dodge the first ten (Nine if we presume we're crashing into the tenth for the warp), you're good enough to dodge the last ten too.

So, uh, how do I view movies in Famtasia anyway? There doesn't seem to be an obvious "view movie" option.

I think you have to have the ROM loaded or something, I'm not sure, don't have Famtasia...I just DLed the 140 MB long file back in the day. :\

And yea...you say it's that simple...but keep in mind how many 'average' players there are that will think that method is impossible.

Heh, okay, I figured it out. There WASN'T an option to view movies in my version, I had to download an earlier one (The version I had was a tester).

And that was pretty cool, for what it was. Never knew you could do that with Robo-Manus, heh.

And this is true in regards to 'average' players and Battletoads. For whatever reason, level 3 is where a lot of people just gave up on the game.

To switch subjects for a moment, the arcade Battletoads was much more "adult", was it not?

I haven't tried it but the arcade game is emulated in MAME. I think there was more toilet humor in the arcade game that Nintendo wouldn't allow, but that's about it.

I own and NEARLY beat the GB version. Starts off fairly easy but then becomes a complete bitch... hell, I couldn't beat one of the end levels even WITH a Game Genie!

Yeah, I got to the last full level of the GB version. Even harder than the NES version if you ask me...freaking brutal game.

Also the last Battletoads game with any effort put into it.

Gives you an idea of the arcade version.

The GB game was actually the first game I ever owned (well.. apart from a few LCD games).. It's not exactly the perfect game for beginners. It took me years before I managed to beat level 2.

I can get to level 5 nowadays, but I simply can't beat it. That stupid brain/rock thing is just too hard to avoid. And I always lose a lot of lives at level 3 too. I suck at that level. And the boss is evil.

As for difficulity.. Yeah, the NES version is definitly hard, but there ARE harder games out there. Bayou Billy must be the hardest NES game I've played. I've only passed level 1 a couple of times on that, while I can get to level 7 or 8 or something on Battletoads.

As for Ghosts 'n' Goblins.. I believe I can get to level 3. But yeah, it's a harder game than Battletoads.

I think the problem isn't that it's hard as much as it is that the game's cheap. Like, there's jumps in level 3 that you have to be at PRECISELY the right pixel to make. And I have NO idea how you beat the Clinger Winger (I think that's it) stage. The orb's just too fast, and my turning abilities aren't ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.

And yet there's two schools of thought about the game; one being it was one of Rare's most underrated games, and the other being it was one of Rare's WORST games.

Um... Hello? Rare made Taboo as well you know.

I did manage to beat the GB version a loooooooong time ago... doubt I could do it again in a pinch.

So the end of Turbo Tunnel on the NES is just ups and downs... just ups and downs while moving at Mach 5. I think I got to the end... once.

Colleen: I don't know that I would necessarily call it underrated, because it received quite the amount of hype back in the day. I AM of the position that it's one of their best games, though.

Neko: Yeah, I don't even think the Turbo Tunnel is the hardest stage of the game.

Nintendo Power gave it a crapload of hype.

Looking back, some people dismiss it as too hard, but the first couple of levels are all right. It's just that it has a really, REALLY steep learning curve. (Trust me, I thought it would be decent since the first level was fairly easy. Wrong. )

Neko: Isn't that the final level? I remember NP doing the map of the place... GEEZ. Longest vertically-scrolling level I've seen in an NES game.

Battletoads = Hardest. Mega. Effing. Pissed Off. Kill your family. Nuke the world. Game. Ever.

But I still love the game. XD
