Okay. For some requested features:

User CP - very possible. I think we should just separate the 'properties' and the 'preferences', to use Windows words. IE, everything Profile, everything that people see when they go to your profile or view your posts should be in one page. The rest, everything that affect how you see the board; Posts/Threads per page, User timezone, post radar should be in another page.

Ability to disable "all" layouts. Quick and easier browsing. Check "Signatures and post headers" in Edit Profile.

Quick Reply? Certainly.

Search will return.

"X already made feature Y! Steal it!"
For the most part, no. We're trying to make something that looks good and feels like it was done by the same team. Not a patchwork of features. Sure, we will find use for the code for implementation tips, but I'm sure a lot of us would prefer to code it ourselves so that we know the code.
And for one thing, feature Y might not even be that good, useful or important.

Last of all, we're trying to simplify the board, too. This is not a feature request thread. This is more than anything else a thread on how to make your user experience easier and better. I wouldn't be surprised if this involved one or two or twenty new features, but that's starting in the wrong end. What this means is that stuff like MAKE A NEW POLL BUTTON U HORES is not needed. Those will be fixed when we redesign the user interface anyway. It's cosmetic, it pertains to the current version of the board look rather than the one we're trying to assemble here and it, frankly, wastes space.

Mention stuff you'd like to be able to get to easier, and how that would be fixed.

What's about uploading the photo album pics little ofter? Oh wait that dosen't make the board easier to use...

Uh making an PHP script for uploading photo album pictures that only admins can use? So we don't have to wait on Acmlm's FTP uploading for the pictures...

2 options

1.See all new threads since last visit.

2.See all of a user's thread he posted in and the username of the last replyer

Both of these feature I use quite often on phpBB based forums.

Like, recent posts? Erk has that exact feature at his place.

I don't use it too often though.

Alright, I got a couple...

-A working smilie click-to-add bar. This can be done with some simple script...

[insert in header somewhere]
[INSERT SCRIPT TAG HERE]
function smilie(code)
{
document.REPLIER.message.value+=code
}
[INSERT /SCRIPT TAG HERE]

[insert above Submit Reply button]
<img src='images/smilies/smile.gif' onclick="smilie('')">[repeat for other smilies]

I actually have Proxomitron add this for me at the moment and it works great.

-When replying to a PM, have the original message in a separate box, so you don't have to delete all the stuff from previous messages (you know how it is when you get like 8 replies back and forth and got a dozen quotes in one PM from all the previous messages, and the title's like "Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Hey").

-If you have any PMs, display it on every page. A simple "New Private Message" with a link to your inbox smucked somewhere at the top (maybe just below the banner/online users) will do.

[edit] Stoopid XMP tag ignoring line breaks, and stoopid board removing the script tags inside even though they can't do anything.

[edit again] and stoopid code tag not closing despite the fact that I did close it, and stoopid board still messing up the script tags even though I disabled them with the <z> tag. Which reminds me, filtering of script tags should be done by sticking a <z> tag in them or a <noscript> tag in front, so we can still see them in examples like this. Just removing the tag entirely is even worse, since I highly doubt the filter does more than one pass. If someone just puts [scr[script]ipt] and the board removes all instances of [script] guess what's left?

*Kicks code tag* close damn you. Ah hell, I'll do it myself.

Well add anything that make the board easier, but not a control panel.
It's just waaaaaaaaay easier to click edit profile than go to user CP and only after that click in edit profile.

About all I can think of is dropping "Mark Forum Read" from the top bar to next to the name of the forum. With it on the top bar, I have a habit of hitting links next to it when I try to mark the forum read.

That, and on a multi-page topic, get rid of the page one link on the forum page. You can click on the title of the topic to read the first page, so it's wasting space in my mind.

I think this board needs some security/anti-lamer upgrades first before adding features meant for functionality and/or ease. I don't think I need to explain this, do I? How many times is that Lihead dumbass going to signup, just to get banned? Yes, he DOES get banned shortly after he registered and acts like a shithead, but he can and does register, and that's the point.

He mustn't even get the chance to register, or at least not as easily as it currently is. Let's face it, the register page is a security swiss cheese; way to easy and open to 'attack' and get through; so is an IP ban.

I think the best and easiest way to counter things like that would be email account activation. Even though people could have multiple emails, still it would limit them a lot of how much can be done now.

In the user controll panel set of ideas, I'd like to see the post layout portions seperated out from the rest. If they had their own page, the boxes could have more room, and the preview could be included on the same page (which would speed debugging layouts up a bit). And maybe more options than just "(sample post)" could be included for the sample text, to help with stretchyness or scroll bars or what have you.

Jesper: IMO, making the board easier to use does deal with cosmetics.

As for the security: Perhaps email registration would be good. The register page will only require an email address, and a key gets sent via email. During the period between the registration and activation, the user's data is stored in a seperate table (like `users_unact`) for up to 48-72 hours. After 48-72 hours, the record is cleared.

Another idea: Administrator activation. Only if the new user's IP matches a banned user. This should filter out most banned people, the admin activation part is because dial up users often share the same IP with hundreds (and even thousands) of other people around the globe.

1. "Mark forums read", anyone? It's not as automatic but it helps a great deal.

Activation of any kind is a good idea; we're working on implementing it. As for cosmetics, I meant fixing problems in THIS layout, because the layout we'll end up using will be rebuild from the ground up, so it won't matter anyway.

I've been sketching up such a thing for ages. As for the sample text, simply adding text at the very end of the post header works great for now.
