I've been thinking. How about, when you create it, tagging your thread according to the contents? You see a lot of threads named after people's hacks but you don't know what's in it. Screenshots? Downloads? Plot summary? So, I've decided to try to lay down a few guidelines:

[Rules] - Used on all threads depicting rules of use in this forum.
[HOWTO] - Info on how to do specific things (FAQs, map editing)
[Issue] - Problem or question regarding something -- added 2004/03/21
[ASM] - Info relating to memory locations or similar hacking.
[Screenshots] - Screenshots of a hack available.
[Download] - Hack or utility download inside.
[GFX] - Info related to tile sets, palettes or other such issues.
[Level] - Questions, polls or opinions on level design.

Every one of these can be combined:
[GFX Download] for Knux' ExGFX workshop
[Download Screenshots Level] for a thread about a hack released with level design discussion
[ASM GFX HOWTO] for a thread discussing how to, say, move the palettes within the ROM.

They should, for best results, appear in the end of the title.

What do you think?

You actually mean adding prefixes for thread titles shown in the parantheses
Usually it might me okay, but on the other hand threads with screens, a demo, introduction of a new ASM hack might be too confusing to have a [Screenshots, Download, ASM] before the normal thread title
The basic idea is neat, so you already know from the title, what the thread promises
It's up to the peopleif they will use these prefixes every time ... a new member probably won't read a sticked thread like this one or just say "That's dumb!".
Well, other opinions ?

I like it, but you can already bet money on it that almost no one will probably stick to the rules.

Gandalf, brackets - [ ] - actually. As for 'before':

Even if only half of us do follow these rules, we still benefit. So it's not a rule as such now, rather a recommendation, but to kick off the new categories, I placed it in [Rules] anyway.

Why not simply doing a test of it ?
You could make it a forum announcement (or for testing it: A sticky thread, the forum won't be already overcroweded with those like before the crash ), or probably talking with Fu and BMF first ...
Along with fitting thread titles it should be only a question of time: As long there will be more and more these guiding thread titles, more and more other and newer users could use them too

Yeah, I guess people will have to get used to this new way of naming their posts first though.

I'd say this is a good idea. Although the [ and ] are a little hard to type... good idea, nonetheless.

Is it okay to abbreviated screenshots as SS? That's how I've been sticking in the names of all of my threads for a while.

Why don't simply hardcode it in the board? I mean, checkboxes for each new thread posting and these prefixes automatically being added to the name.

Because not 100% of the board has use for those things.

Speaking of which; this is just to tag special interest areas - downloadables, ASM hacks, announcements, screenshots. I'm in no way trying to fit everything into a category, you're all way too creative for that.

Furthermore, this is also why it doesn't matter if not everyone uses it; in a lot of cases their thread simply won't fit any of the tags available, and if people start to tag hacks and downloadables with it, somewhere along the road, those other people will pick it up too and tag THEIR threads.

Stickying this, since you seem to like it.

Definitely keep it a recommendation, not a rule. All I ask is that people make their topic titles somewhat descriptive, i.e. "New [insert hack name here] screenshots!", not just "[insert hack name here]" or "screenshots".

Good idea Jesper.

It's reminds me of the tags I see on roms.

It's will really save some time for me, as of know I just ignore many of the SMW threads. Becuse I don't have the time/will opening up becuse the thread title dosen't have any clue what it is about...

Rather just [Newbie]. n00b is overused.

If the non-newbies start to work on some [HOWTO]s, there won't be too many 'light' [Issue]s left.

A note to those following these guidelines; when having many tags, use [Tag1 Tag2], not [Tag1 | Tag2] or [Tag1, Tag2]. Then we get into punctation, and wether [ Tag1 | Tag2 ] would be more good looking than [Tag1 | Tag2], or if commas can have spaces on both sides, and so on, and I REALLY don't want to deal with that. Official word: use spaces. Between tags. Only between tags. And only one space.

I heard some issues about [ ] being hard to type. I don't know about you but there's this strange character, I think it's @ or something, which is pretty hard for me to type, yet they managed to build one of the Internet's largest techniques around it. Yeah, email. All I'm saying is that there is not a lot of effort involved, so please, if you're gonna do this, do it right. It won't take you two more seconds.

Edit: I edited a few thread titles (including this) to try to set a precedent. As someone said, once people start doing this, other people will follow.
