Haven't been active in almost a week... thank the hurricane...

Anyway, I have iced Basic Land and am now working on a new hack.


Simple title screen. DUH!

Somewhat good overworld. I removed sprite layer because... I haven't touched overworld sprites yet.

Meet Joe.

He spin jumps on Spikeos.

Helmet Dude.

Throw him away!

Big Joe.

Falling to the ground.

Questions? Comments? Concerns? Constructive critisizm (I know already someone is going to say something...)?

And a question from me. How do you use that fast BG scroll sprite again without using sprite C1? I don't actually remember. You can tell why in the overworld screenie.

I just started it. I started it yesterday... mainly because of the fact I had no power for the last few days... so a demo won't appear for a while...

1: Not enough detail in the character, who looks ugly. Also, the words of the title screen need to be larger.

2: Yuck. The train tracks look good, so does the layout of the map, but you lack edges of cliffs in some places, and that always looks like crap.

3: The cartoony sprites and the foreground clash HORRIBLY. The coins need more shading. But you re-did the foreground in some places, so that's good. The question blocks look good.

4: Same as above, and the "used" brown question blocks wouldn't work well with things in turntiles.

5: Speaking of turntiles, they look ugly. The sprite has the same clashing issue as the one above.

6: Ditto.

7: Looks alright.

8: What the hell's with the cut off ground?

I will answer to all of those.

1: Not enough detail? I like him the way he is: not detailed. I don't want him to look realistic or Mario-ish. I want to be original.
2: Not finished with the overworld yet...
3: Well... what should I do: make the ground cartoonish, or make the enemies more detailed (I think it would be easier for me to do the ground)?
4: Don't really understand that...
5: I wanted something a little more... well, not square. I might detail the tiles though.
6: Already answered.
7: Good. A screen that is good.
8: Haven't worked past that point.

now for some comments:

1. Alright...the ground is AMAZING! but your Joe creature's head isn't attached to his body...

2. I think as soon as this OW gets done, it will look VERY cool good.

3. Lookin good. Did you use the YI coins there? They look like mine (which are almost YI coins)

4. Same as above. BTW, your blocks are really cool. Nice idea.

5. That little yellow creature is odd. What is it? and why do you have some "?" blocks with no "?" marks on them?

6. Same as above.

7. Same as above.

8. Same as above.

I think it looks okay. I can't really judge tho because most of the shots are of the same level. With some more viraity (I can't even spell that) I think I could give a better judgement.

1: Wha? It is attached to his body unless I made a mistake somewhere... I will look into that...
2: Thanks.
3: No. I just removed the little "indent" in the middle of the coin animation frames.
4: Thanks.
5: That is a replacement of the Goomba... and those blocks are turn blocks. I now know I need to change them in some way...

I am working on the level now. I just wanted a hack that had nothing to do with Mario or Luigi.

And variety is spelled... wait... I just spelled it out...

Hey looks good! That helmet dude is extra funny. However, I do have to say, the cartoony attempt at the foreground definitely clashes with the background. I'd assume you will fix that in your final release.

I have to make a background. I just have that so the level doesn't really look plain or boring for now. I am making a background for it, though, so...

Don't worry. It will be fixed by the first demo.

The game looks great, ignore the negative criticsim from the others. The idea of replacing mario is cool and something that should be tried in many other people hacks. I get tired of playing as mario in all these hacks.

Now I am in a predicament. I am thinking of getting rid of shading completly in order to make it look more like a cartoon. What is your opinion on this? Do you think it will be good or bad?

Also, I have disabled 2 players (Alaric's 1 player hack helped) so now I can remove Luigi's palette on the overworld and make Joe look better on it. No screenies just yet.

I think a total cartoony overhaul would be awesome if done right. No shading, just solid color and black outlines. It would be pretty unique, anyway...

So I tried it out to see how it would look. I think that it will turn out really well. Here is a small little change to Joe to make him... well, more cartoony.


Ignore everything except Joe himself.

Looks cartoony for sure. It could be a challenge to try and make the entire game like that... which is cool for me!

Well, fire Joe is just a palette change, and cape Joe is just big Joe with a cape, so... I am halfway there. I just have to make the sprite for bigger Joe. He is going to be tougher to draw...
