| I have a fast connection too, and yeah, things lag a bit for me sometimes. This is one of the reasons I don't really like layouts that much. Sure, I have one, but generally, from an Administrative point of view, they are such a pain in the arse. You will always have users that will complain that layouts take too long to download, and you will always have users that will have and like larger layouts as well. And from an Administrative point of view, you will never be able to reach some kind of happy equilibrium, because any restrictions you put into place will be "too restrictive" for a lot of users. You can't please everyone. Still, I'll see if my next layout can have an even smaller footprint than this one.  I enjoy a challenge.... |

| I don't see why people just don't use GIF's and if your worried about the 256 colour restriction, I really can't see the point of your problem cause I have a great GIF converter and it keeps all the colour in my pictures. | |||

Hyperhacker: I was talking about if the browser downloads 20 diffrent pictures. Not the same picture over and over again...  GIF? GIF is outdated, PNG works better than GIF in many cases. Hell when I don't use PNG I use JPG. |

| Well, I made a new layout, but I think mine's actually larger than the last one. Oh well, it was worth a try anyways. As for PNG's, they're good, but they're often pretty big too. Depending on what I need to do, I use either JPG or GIF. I tried this picture out in JPG, GIF and PNG and high quality JPEG was smaller than the others with better quality. |

| Something a lot of people aren't aware of either is that you can set a compression ratio for JPG images, at least in more decent programs such as Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. In Hyperhacker's background's case, setting it to 25% compression already, without resizing it, makes it 61 KB. Which is already a 30 KB difference without any quality loss really. If it is a really sharp image having a low compression is good, but Hyperhacker's background image isn't quite something that needs that. |

Yeah, I usually set the compression ratios with my images, because I don't want to have images that are too large -- they're a pain in the arse for people on dialup and such. I periodically get to use dialup, so I know  Course, on the other hand, I'm usually damned fussy when it comes to quality with my images too -- particularly the ones that I have drawn myself. I don't spend up to 10 hours on a picture only to compress it badly and have it look like crap  |
