Riddle number four: You have a three-gallon bucket, a five-gallon bucket, and a source of water. How can you accurately measure four gallons of water with these items? |

OK, here goes: You start with two buckets, one containing zero gallons with a capacity of three (0/3) and another with zero gallons and a capacity of five (0/5). Fill up the small buckets and you'll have (3/3) and (0/5). Now dump the contents of the small bucket into the big one and get (0/3) and (3/5). Next, fill the small bucket again [(3/3) and (3/5) now] and dump its contents into the large bucket until it's full. This will leave you with (1/3) and (5/5). Now you can empty out the big bucket -- (1/3) and (0/5) -- , put the contents of the small one into the big one -- (0/3) and (1/5) -- and then fill the small one up with three gallons. Dump that into the big bucket and it will then contain four gallons! |

Great, that's definitely a right answer! Riddle number four was solved by Heian-794! (but there are more correct answers) Since there are more ways to get a correct answer, I guess there can be multiple solvers on this one -- unless Heian gets it again... |

Heres another answer: 1) Fill the 5 bucket up and tip it in the three to fill the three bucket up (3/3 2/5) 2) Empty the 3 bucket and tip the 2 gallons from the 5 bucket into the three (2/3 0/5) 3) Fill the five bucket and tip water from it to fill up the three... 4 GALLONS!!! (3/3 4/5) |

Yes, that one will do too. You'll be listed below Heian as the people who solved that riddle. If anyone else has another correct answer, they can continue to guess until I post riddle number five. |

There are only two answers...so, there is no point in someone figuring out more. Want proof: Proof

Neo, did you just draw that up yourself (my answer on the left, Timmy's on the right)? I know I've seen problems similar to this before, where you have buckets holding X and Y units, and the key is to get X+1 or Y-1 units or some such. Is this particular one famous? |

yeah, i drew it up myself. I had a math homework similar to this in that I had a 10/7/4 config and i needed to get 2 in either the 7 or 4. One of the steps was to draw the graph representing this problem. Which is what I did for this 3/5 case. as for that particular problem being famous, probably not. |

Sorry Smallhacker, that's not it. Keep thinking! edit: Hey, I'm a Red Goomba! Did that just happen...? edit2: I've changed the wording of riddle number five since Smallhacker's guess. (edited by Reshaper256 on 10-14-04 03:31 PM) (edited by Reshaper256 on 10-14-04 03:41 PM) |

Number 5 is easy. The answer is "Footsteps". As for number 6...I have no idea. |

I've got #6! Add "BAR" to the beginning of each of them, and you've got different words. |

Damn. I was close. I tried earlier to place stuff in front of the words, but didn't find any that matched.

Riddle number five was solved by APH Striker! Riddle number six was solved by Heian-794! Alright. I've decided to implement a "point system" into this riddle thread. To be fair, all past riddles will count as 2 points, while future riddles may vary in their worth. (Anyone who has made a guess will be ranked on the list.) CURRENT STANDINGS 6 pts Heian-794 2 pts APH Striker 2 pts MorbidMolly 2 pts Smallhacker 2 pts Timmy Turner 0 pts Gavin 0 pts Kario 0 pts Kirby ATW 0 pts NSNick Riddle number seven: People who have it don't tell. People who get it don't know. People who find out they have it don't want it. What is it? 2 pts Riddle number eight: You were given two bottles of pills, one labeled "Bottle A" and one labeled "Bottle B". The pills in these bottles are identical, except that if you take the wrong amount of either one you will die. You must take one of each pill each day, and no extra, or you will die. You already have a pill from bottle A in your hand, but when you try to get a pill from bottle B, two B pills spill out into your hand with the A pill and you lose track of which pills are which. You can't just throw the three pills away and get new ones because you have to take every last one eventually. You can't afford to get more. What can you do? 4 pts (edited by Reshaper256 on 10-20-04 12:42 AM) |

7: An STD? 8: The best I can get on this one only gives you a 2/3 chance, but you can take two of the pills in your hand and put the remaining one back in the B bottle. |

Let's see. For #8, are the effects noticeable? |
