A public alpha test version of my SMB3 editor is out. Doesn't do a lot besides basic level editing yet, though. There are a few level rendering bugs still out there (enemies and bridges displayed at a slightly off position, objects that extend to sky don't like to be moved, some objects are drawn with glitches, floor and ceiling tiles aren't drawn properly [I will fix this soon])...

There is a bit of basic documentation in the !readme.txt file inside the zip.

Feedback, bug reports?

Thanks for releasing it Hukka, I'll give you some feedback in a little while.

Well well. This certainly does look like a solid editor. Nice interface, too, no-fuss LM-esque. Good work.

Cool, a SMB3 Editor in Win32, gotta try this. Good job, the editor looks sweet.

Dammit! Shouldn't have hurried with the release. I just found a really annoying bug in the level saving routine which will potentially corrupt the level. Of course I never encountered the bug until releasing the thing... Stay tuned for a bugfix.

Everything loads fast, the objects move smoothly, and everything feels very proffesional. The gui is very uncluttered, and nice on the eyes. The zoom in option is VERY handy and nicely done.

One thing I noticed is that when I maximize the window, it only 'kind of' maximizes... It leaves a gap about half an inch on the right hand side and on the bottom. Nothing major, nothing that would take a fantastic first impression of your editor down any.

Also, please don't include SMAS support.

Nicely done. A great Editor so far, I already told you a bug I found via mIRC, so I won't repeat it here (You know, the Divide by Zero thing)

Good job, I hope it continues to shape up this well.

WOW! I was playing with it & I like the way it feels. The thing I like the most is that it's really user friendly. I can't wait untill this is finished. Thanks Hukka for deciding to make an editor for SMB3.

Thanks for the feedback! I have now updated the page with a quick fix that disallows moving objects off limits (doing this trashed them). Still not sure if that is the original reason for the level saving bug as I don't have time to test it right now. Big thanks to DahrkDaiz.

Edit: oops, yeah, I forgot to fix the other issues mentioned earlier on this thread :oP You'll just have to wait a bit for that as I'm going to bed now.

Very nice. It seems to not work when I try to go to a world map though. Does anyone else have this problem? Also, you should see if you can build a NES emulator into it like what they did with that SMB Utility.

I look foreward to seeing this completed! =D

Different games should be left to different editors, IMO. Let's have a kickass SMB3 for NES editor and leave other versions to other editors... At the very least, that should be the last thing done, if it is ever done. there's no point in tow decent ediotr cabailities vs. one amazing one.

You said exactly what I was thinking. It wouldn't bother me if it were implemented, I just feel it should be added dead last if at all, after the NES Mario 3 editing is perfect, and bug free. I would just hate to see some frivolous extra slow that down. But it's Hukka's editor, and he might add it next, who knows.

I have again updated the editor, grab it from the same place as before. Updates include:

  • Fixed drawing of floor/ceiling tiles (still incomplete and very unoptimized, though)
  • Program now quits if no ROM is loaded on startup
  • Fixed improper maximization of the editor window
  • Program now uses the default Windows font
  • Nicer About box :oP

Oh, and there is no world map editor yet.
As for SMAS support, it's not a priority right now but the data is in a similar enough format to NES SMB3 that implementing it should pose no big trouble.

EDIT: I just noticed some really bad object trashing that occurs when editing 4-byte objects. I hadn't noticed this before so I'll have to try to figure out if it's something I introduced recently.

It's very nice, and I for one don't care if it's got data corruption bugs in it. Even LM, with its STAR tag memory allocation system had data corruption bugs in it well into 1.50. You've just started work on it a month or two ago, noone could reasonably expect a well-behaved program until sharp releases.

New update again. I think I fixed the 4-byte object corruption bug. I also optimized the drawing routines a lot and added numpad / and * shortcut keys that work like in SMB3 Discombobulator.
