Has anyone ever attempted to hack any of the three DKC games? or at least made a decent fan-game? I'm an old-school hardcore 2D platformer and since this series was so great (and probably set the thin line between 2D platforms and 3D games) I was wondering if anyone ever tried that. BTW.. yes, I'm a 'newbie' in this forum (been around a few months as a guest, finally got registered), bare with me |

Ok! The largest database of hacks is at http://www.zophar.net However, no Donkey Kong Country hack can be found there. As far as I know there has been no hack of such a game till this date. Although there have been some translations of these games. So at least text hacking is possible. Since you like those 2D platform games, I suggest you search for some Super Mario World hacks, there are plenty of them. |

Trust me... I've played those SMW hack , and almost all of them are great, or at least I am lucky enought to have downloaded the really good ones, like SDW-TLC, Luigi's Adventure, among others. Yeah I know DKC games have been text hacked because since I live in a spanish-talking country these games reached my land not only in their original language but also in a 'mexican-kinda-translation'-spanish. I was bending in laughter when i was reading the dialogue of Cranky on the new version of DKC2 for GBA (you can choose between 5 different languages on the same catridge) |

my sister tried her hand at that game....i think she found quite a bit of stuff too but lost some of it she did crack the sound engine which i thought was kinda cool.... I'll have to ask her if she has any of her findings saved...if I remember, she said somthing along the lines of the levels being stored upsidedown and backwards...and dk's house was a bg with an invisible floor who's height you could set. I don't know offsets though, that's where she'd come in I suppose

As SNES games became more advanced, the processor of the system became obsolete to what the new games were demanding. So unique cartridge built-in engines were implemented to support advanced graphics. These special engines included the mode7, which allowed a "false" 3D effect in racing/flying games such as Starfox. DKC was subject to the SuperFX2 chip (I think that was it correct me if I'm wrong). This was revolutionary, and is what gave DKC its semi-true 3D gfx, later popular in the arcade-like games such as the more advanced fighters. Maybe you have noticed a peculiar similarity in the gfx between DKC and Street Fighter Alpha 2? Thats right. Same chip. Due to this custom chip, the assembly is different from the traditional snes making it difficult to graphics hack.

Vagla gave this data to me some time ago, unless you two have some relation that the rest of us don't know about. BTW, that video says jack about the technical specs about the game. 8 chips of 4 bits each, 32 bit game. =p No adapter needed, and then some stuff they previewed was removed in game anyway. (Yeah, I have that video too. ) To top it off, at the end, they showed a sneak peak of Killer Instinct. |

Originally posted by GB-K sorry man, i think you got some things wrong. 1. mode7 is a graphics mode of the snes's graphics coprocessor, its not build into cartridges. the snes has graphics modes 0-7, they all differ in the number of usable planes, number of usable colors per plane and stuff. mode7 for example has one 256 colour plane thats scalable/rotateable. 2. starfox didnt use mode7 nowhere, the cartridge had the super fx coprocessor in it and it has in fact true 3d graphics. 3. donkey kong country doesnt have ANY special chip in its cartridge. just plain 32mbits rom + 16kbit sram. 4. street fighter alpha 2 doesnt have the super fx, either. it has the sdd1 coprocessor inside its cartridge, its used for graphics decompression only. sidenote: a game that uses the super fx apart from starfox and other 3d games is yoshis island. in case you dont believe me, open up all the mentioned roms in zsnes and watch the bootup info for the rom(on the bottom of the screen when you've loaded a rom) starfox and yoshis island say: sfx or super fx donkey kong country says: hirom or bank:hi street fighter alpha 2 says: sdd1 so, basically everything you said was wrong i can also make scans of the cartridges if you dont believe me. |

Over at Peekin Pursuits, I came across a document and a utility that might help you 'see' the level data and pinpoint some of it. His page is here: http://fdwr.tripod.com/snes.html The document I read was here (with donkey kong country info): http://fdwr.tripod.com/docs/tilelocs.txt The utility he wrote and speaks about in the above document is here: http://fdwr.tripod.com/progs/tmv187.zip It's an older utility, and it's DOS, but I still use it, and it's very helpfull. And it's DKC related. Actually, I'll just post what he wrote in his doc, if you don't feel like clicking and reading.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Donkey Kong Country No wonder I couldn't find any reslembances of a level in WRAM. There are several long levels stored fully expanded in the ROM. I actually realized they were levels a long time ago, but didn't know how they were stored. Compared to normal, they look like they're stored sideways and backwards, with each of 16 words actually being a vertical column in the level. The lowest address is the top left of the level. The highest address is the bottom right. Each word forward is one tile down. Every 16 words forward is a tile to the right. I still don't know how the odd shaped levels are stored, but probably something like "Mario World 2" where pieces are joined together. Most games use 16x16 level tiles, but DKC uses large 32x32 tiles (made of 16 8x8 graphics tiles). B3B00h ** Platform Perils! B6960h ** Bonus Room? B6B80h ** Trick Track Trek! 1EA91Ch Rambi graphics 203836h 16x?:word Snow Barrel Blast 220000h 16x?:word What stinkin level is this? 260D88h 16x?:word Mine Cart Carnage! 290000h 64x?:word Pieces of a larger level 2C1800h 16x?:word Another curious level 2D23AEh 32x?:word What is it? 387768h 32x?:word Another weird structure There were several more curiosities and levels that I left out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hope this helps somewhat.... hmm....a few she dosn't have she had alot of the first world found, but it's not my place to post it....I'll ask her about if shes got it and see what I can do edit: this is Yoronosuku..the girl MajinBlue said had information I had all of that data but I also had (at least, I think so) the first three levels. That did not include Crankey's Cabin though (Jungle Hijinx, Ropey Rampage, and Reptile Rumble, iirc)...I think, though it is pure speculation that Crankey's Cabin, Funkey's Flights, and Candy's Save Point are in the same format as Donkey Kong's house. The boss levels have this similar potential, though Gang Plank Galleon is still up in the air for me...if someone would like to confirm and maybe disprove me then you can feel free...I also wrote a tiny writeup on the sound working too I hope I can find my old old data, though =\ A thing to maybe keep in mind is how easy finding bonus room data is would be if we figured out screen warps, or at least events on destroyable ground or blast-barrels. I believe I hardly understood anything from this thread.. but It's good to know that people have considered to 'dig deeper' on the DKC grounds.. However, all this info involves DKC1.. perhaps the 'coding' and other stuff is much 'simplier' or rather optimized on the next episodes of the series.. I'm looking foward for information on DKC2 rather than DKC1.. Still, what you found about the music engine on DKC could become useful for hacks on 'allready hackable' games such as SMW or YI.. imagine SMW with DKC's Soundtrack.. brings out a new twist on things, doesn't it.. since I consider DK Triology's Soundtrack as one of the best amongst SNES games |
