We all know, FF8 wasn't the most liked Final Fantasy. People like to bash it. Even thought it wasn't my favorite, I still fail to see a good reason for to much bashing.

My points:

FF8 had a good way of learning Limit Breaks:
Let's see... Every characters had different way of actually learning Limit Breaks. Every of them were special (Maybe except Quistis, having the same ability than a blue mage).

Hero's Rival:
You have to admit that Seifer was plain nice. His attacks were impressive (his limit was great), and changed when you saw him another time.

Plot:
Maybe a little weak point, it was repetitive. But still, there were special things in it. The whole "I'm not the sorceress anymore" was very fun.

Character Customisation:
Using your magic to make strong characters = nice. You could make extremly powerfull characters.

Getting new weapons:
This is one of the best point of the game IMO. You needed more than money, you needed the materials. Even more complicated, you needed to find the weapon magazine.

Final Boss:
Having to fight the coolest GF ever, product of your own mind was a good idea. Also, finding out that the strongest magic was only avaible to use during the last fight was neat. Many forms maked this battle even better. Also, removing K.Oed character after sometime wasn't too stupid either. And even better, having to fight with random characters was making it alittle harder.

Such good points, but such bashing. I don't understand, help me
And I plan on posting more soon.

Can't say that FFVIII was bashed more than Mystic Quest...I'll say that much right now...but that's another story altogether.

And you forget one major point...the music in FFVIII probably had to be some of the best around in...ever really. And limit break-wise...if you were one that wanted to go more haywire on those than anything else in the game...they were relatively simple to obtain (Aura + Low-HP). So anything would probably be destroyed by a run from Squall's Lionheart, Rinoa's Shooting Star, and heck...throw Irvine's Quick Shot in there with maxed strength and speed and you'll be kicking some serious ass.

The main mini-game in it, Triple Triad, I went nuts over...although I never really got to a point where I was so good that I could start using it to the advantage of maxing my stats (not counting GFs that you raise and junction magic to)...I only saw someone else do it. That said, I think what got most people was the use of the GF system...but if you figure on how you could max out your stats...it was about as similar to maxing out your stats in say FFVII (i.e. the grand number 255).

I mean, it was my first game on the PSX period and my third FF game...didn't get around to playing 7 until I went through MQ and VI, and I had already looked through IV and V.

But really...they can bash all they want...but like most FF games...you'll play them anyways.

How could I forget the music??

Anyway, the only bad point I'm seeing is that it's too easy. And Triple Triad, good times. I had a neraly complete collection. What I liked is when I realised that you could change cards in items.

One mistake, there. You don't need the magazine, it just helps you know what materials you need.

Also, I think that it was too easy to overpower the characters. I had characters in disc 1 that were alone stronger than bosses from disc 2... the only thing lower was my characters' HP, which wasn't a major issue anyway.

It's not that it was a BAD game, but... well, it is the only game I've ever fallen asleep playing.

I liked FF8; heck, I even played it more than once. I even have collectable items from the game...at any rate, it isn't my favorite, but I don't hate the game either. The music is just amazing, and Squall is the hotness.... *coughs*....anyway, it's been about a year or so since I've last played it and I never played the mini game. Maybe once or twice, but I didn't really bother with it that much.

I played 8, I tried to like it. I really, really did. I just plain couldn't. There were parts of it that were geniusly pulled off (the Balamb Garden coming out of the ground, Moombas, Weapon upgrades, Limit breaks, Irvine being even hotter than Squall IMO), but then there were the shortcomings, like the twinkability of the game. I remember I attached 100 Thundagas (a spell you can get fairly early in the game) to Squall's HP, he was unstoppable for the majority of the game. The player gets a huge kick in the crotch towards the end of the game after relying on their GFs for so long, and the people who never bothered to figure out the Junction system to its fullest extent were just screwed over. While I appreciated the innovation that the Junctioning system provided, and even enjoyed making sure my characters were unbeatable in most situations, I just didn't like the feel of the game. It wasn't bad at all; no FF game has ever truly been horrible in my eyes, even FFX, and no matter how much I complain about X and VIII both had their moments for me. I just think there were better games in the series. VIII also felt too sterile for me, like everything was supposed to happen right when it happened, cleanly and quickly. It felt very linear. Despite all of the exploration a person could do, what did it really matter in the end? New sights? New items? Items were quickly eclipsed by GF abilities (namely Alexander's Revive, and Siren's status healing power). The sights were unresponsive, it was much more entertaining to blaze through the plot (which I did find rather engaging, particularly the relationships that went on outside of the main one between Squall and Rinoa) than to spend meaningless hours walking around in towns. VIII was more about the characters than the world on a whole, whereas in IX, VII, and VI, you really get the feeling that what you are doing has an effect on the entire world rather than the twelve people that VIII centers around. In those three games, you become famous, everyone knows your name, you are the alpha and the omega, and all know of your glorious exploits. In VIII, no matter what you do, you're still getting a salary from SEED even as you battle your way through the horrors of the world and take on the ultimate evil itself. It was like Pirates of the Carribean; Well done, but it felt like things were missing, or some things that were put in were unnecessary. Perhaps I should play it again...

Grey....god damn. It's like I'm looking at a word orgy.

"Can't say that FFVIII was bashed more than Mystic Quest."

And rightfully so!

Anyway, FF VIII was alright. The music? Well, there were only a few noteworthy tracks, the rest were pretty bleh as for as FF music goes.

Triple Triad was the best part of the game.

FF VIII had pretty good summons and nice music (Altered Beast, Maybe I'm A Lion, Force Your Way), but I didn't like it at all; only these two reasons - finding the G.F.s and the music were the reason why I even dealt with it

As for the limit system:
Simply keep your HP low enough and you'll wipe out the most bosses easily; if you even junction something like Curaga or even Ultima with HP, you reach the critical zone pretty fast

The only thing that was really stupid was Laguna's card: You could change it into 100 hero.

But one thing I will never Square for is: Ultima Weapon and Omega Weapon. They were alot too weak. But Eden's quest took me a while to figure out. I still say that FF8 has his own good things. You only had to find them.

Hmm, well i never really liked the story too much, it never made me feel for any of the characters. If one of them fell out of a plane and you saw them slap on the roof of his own house while his one and only son watches whos mother had died when he was born.. I couldnt have cared less. Where as in say.. FFIV, if Cecil cut his chin i would have cared . The music was good i will give you that but not fantastic, not as good as FFVII. I like the normal idea of finding weapons and magic and so on, i didnt like the junction system one little bit. The card game was good yes, the best that i have seen. Hmm the graphics gave me a headeche.

PS.. I didnt like it too much

I wonder why this thread turned into a FF8 bashing thread...

(random stupid guy): "Cuz FF8 SUCKS A**!"

*PUNCH!*

No, seriously, I do not understand why it's so bashed...

Oh wait! I got the anwser:

FF7 was a shallow game that masked it's lack of gameplay and story with something called "WOW!" factor.

FF8 was a much better game... but had little "WOW!" factor.

In most people's minds: Gameplay < "WOW!" factor

NOTE: The ONLY real problem with FF8 is that just like FF2, it tried a bit too hard to change the battle system... and thus, there were flaws in the battle system that you could abuse. HOWEVER, it's not becease that you can abuse them that you must do it.

The Draw system could be also a source of frustration.

In fact, the reason people didn't liked FF8 was becease they did NOT wanted a new FF... they wanted a rehash of FF7 and a rehash of FF7, FF8 is not.

I've had fun finishing FF8 more than 20 times. I played FF7 and I liked it, but enough to actually dislike FF8? There were new things like: Party actually isn't comming out of the leader. Character not in party come from somewhere.

Things like it good.

If you powerleveled your way through the game though it was really annoying to fight monsters that kept up with you and the only reason you did all that leveling was so they wouldn't be that strong. It ruins the point of leveling.
