Does anyone else have this? It's the prequel to Disgaea, an excellent albeit rare tactical RPG for the PS2. For whatever reason, it was released in the US after Disgaea although it was developed beforehand. It's pretty addictive, but it does have some annoyances to it.

The Good

I love La Pucelle's style of storytelling. The cut scenes are essentially manga with occasional spoken dialogue to go along with the speech bubbles. A little character portrait appears next to the text and shows the character's expressions, which (when anything other than normal) are usually exaggerated and funny. Slapstick humor abounds as well. The voice acting is some of the best I've heard in a game - it's cartoony, engaging, and expressive.

Somebody obviously spent a ton of time and effort on the English translation of the game's text. Not only does everything flow well, puns and groaners show up in random places. (For instance, a zombie skeleton says "Just call me Napoleon Bone-apart.")

Capturing and training monsters is fun. After battles, you get random training actions to use. Some of these make the monster unhappy but raise their stats, and others cheer the monster up. I once got an X-rated magazine to give to the monster, and that resulted in a HUGE happiness boost.

Equippable items come with various elemental alignments and bonuses, and you can level them up. I haven't really gotten very deep into the item system yet, but I do like how each character gets 4 slots for stuff and the effects of said stuff are cumulative, so even low-grade items can be useful for a new character with nothing, as you can just pile them on.

The Bad

Dragon Warrior II called...it wants its craptactular difficulty curve back. Chapter 1 was nice and reasonable, with battles starting out jokingly simple and involving more and more work as the chapter continued but never getting evil or forcing you to level up a buttload just to survive the next one. Chapter 2 was, of course, more difficult...but still manageable. And then I got to the last battle with a strong boss with freaky high HP, and I got clobbered. Yeah, I know he was a boss, but early bosses in games aren't supposed to be that much stronger than the garden-variety baddies. Guh. Time for some leveling, I suppose...

Part of battling involves purifying these squares that send out energy streams. You can stand in the energy streams and face in a direction to send them off in that direction. When purified, a stream will damage enemies that are on it, and it will also give you item "experience", too. The problem is that setting them up to do anything is oftentimes a fricking pain in the ass. You see, anything (friend or foe) that is facing into the stream's flow will stop it, so it's pretty common for an enemy to wreck your plan just by moving. (Disgaea has a similar "set up colored squares that do nifty stuff when you trigger them" feature, but from what I understand, it's not nearly as unreliable and annoying to master.) There is a way to cheat by using an item on an enemy and canceling the action, which will allow you to change the enemy's direction while your cursor is still on it, but still, the purification deal could have used some more refinement.

I just got this a few days ago before my birthday rolled around...fifty bucks. Thus far it's living up to the majority of it but if the curve is like DW2 I'm probably going to be in for a good ride. Says it's about 120 hours of game time on the package itself...but considering a battle thus far takes a good 10-20 minutes to get everything done...and I'm only two hours in thus far...my gut tells me it'll probably get really bad rather quick if what you say is true.

From what I'm looking at so far...I'm left with a feeling that a lot of things were overdone and some things were not done enough...I really can't give a good review yet but only an impression of the whole thing.

Woohoo! Somebody else here is playing this after all...

I realized that part of my problem was not enough manpower, so I went and captured a bear for my team. He's been pretty helpful. I'm also having Croix (the badass character that you get in chapter 2) use his fire shot skill often to power it up, as the stupid gargoyle boss is at least somewhat weak to fire (I think his element is wind). I also managed to perform a miracle without really trying, which was pretty cool. All I'd wanted to do was make a long streak of dark energy to purify so I could get experience for my equipped items, but I'd made a circle and there were enemies in it, so there it went.

To be fair, the DW2 comparison was more snarky than serious. Doing a few more chapter 2 battles and buying some better items noticeably helped my characters. I've heard that getting excellent items is really the key to this game, but I don't know anything about the item combining system, and I don't mind sitting around and farming for gold, so I just occasionally take a shop survey telling them to stock more expensive, rare items, and that seems to work.

Well I had to level up for the longest time in Chapter 1 because I didn't realize that I could have four equips going and I really didn't understand a lot of the powering up stuff until about an hour in tonight. Played for about five hours and got up to Chapter 3 (7:43 in). Croix is definitely a badass, not just in character but also in the fact that I can attack in a range of two and get up to five simultaneous attacks + whatever support off on a single enemy, and I did get a Big Bear (before reading your post) and I also have a Big Bat and a Big Zombie. Also have two bats for backup, they suck blood and can cast wind or fire so that helps.

Levels are around 5-8...they leveled down Culotte when he got out of my party.

EDIT: Re-read that post of yours...yea...the boss at the end of Chapter 2 was a bit intimidating with about 300 HP when my best character, my bear, had 100 or so. I barely survived with Alouette and my Big Bear (who was really bad off). Beat him with a combination of back-attacking him with the one Rush move the bear had and the 'Cool' attack that Alouette had...about four or so battles just to kill him. Hard...but doable.

Actually, the graphics are probably the least thing to like about the game...that's probably one of the game's downfalls because it looks like something that I could've played a generation or two ago. I mean there's an attempt with the hand-drawn backgrounds...but other than that it's pretty solid for the rest of it...and god is there a lot of options and things to customize.

Got through Chapter 3...but the problem is I got the Bad Ending...see that's another thing you have to worry about. Cut my Good Ending streak by that...and if I wanted to do that again it'd take me 3 hours.

Don't expect a price drop for a while...this game has already been out since May 4 and it's still 50 bucks.

How did you get a good ending in Chapter 1?

Spoiler:
I thought I explored it pretty thoroughly as I went through, and I opened the hidden chamber before reaching the throne room, but I just wound up with a normal ending, and I didn't know there was supposed to be a boss fight until I went back in there later. Do you have to purify the levels a certain amount before getting to the end of the chapter?

Spoiler:
Naw, you don't have to...at least I don't recall doing as such. I got every part taken care of in the Devil's Stomach (which is how I got my Big Zombie and Big Bat) and I got to Montblanc Castle and what you may have missed was the Hall of Truth (re-read...yea you had this) which is in the far right back of the room before you go into the boss fight. If you go in there and go towards the knight in armor panel there should be a place that opens up where you see a diary...and among other things before that you should try exploring everything you can...but that part alone took me three or four tries to get right.

After that, just beat up the boss to get the Good Ending.

Now I wish I could get the Good Ending for Ch. 3.

Of course he does. You wouldn't expect Melvin to discriminate, would you?

I like that picture, though - she has curvy hips and muscular legs, which is a very nice change from the thin look that we typically see for female characters in video game art. I also think it's interesting that her hips are actually wider than her boobies. That's the way I'm built, so I'm happy to see us pears getting some flattering representation.

Not everybody gets games as soon as they come out or winds up playing them right away. Though I enjoy console gaming very much, it's not my #1 free-time priority, so it's pretty common for me to not get around to a new game for a while, especially when we get more than one at a time. We got Ratchet and Clank ages ago, and I literally haven't touched it yet.

Rydain = Colleen.

Just because I have a game doesn't mean that I try to finish it right away. That's a BAD thing sometimes though, because I've had MORE than enough free time to finish Metroid Prime and Zelda: Wind Waker by now.

And Super Mario Bros. came out back in 1985 and there's a forum about it. Your point?

Hm, maybe I should make a thread about Dragon Warrior 3. Or Illusion of Gaia. Or maybe, just maybe, a thread on Threads of Fate.

...OK, that's going a bit too far. But any game's eligible for discussion, Hero. Old or new. Remember that.

Colleen - That's funny...I haven't finished Metroid Prime or Wind Waker either, and I put a significant amount of time into both. I guess I really don't care as much about beating games as I used to.

On the subject of the game - In chapter 1, I had found the room that Ranko mentioned, but there was a search square I'd missed when playing through it the first time. D'oh. I'm in the forest now, and I'm being very careful to hit all the search squares in each area before I beat it. So far, I think I'm doing OK, and I think the difficulty curve problem was temporary. I recruited a hippo and have been focusing on buying better items and making long streams of energy to purify (to power up said items), and I haven't had to do any real leveling since getting ready for that boss battle in chapter 2. I think my problem was that I just didn't have enough strong characters, but now I do, so life is good. I've also discovered that setting up miracles really isn't as tough or random as some people claim it is. If you just try to move your characters around and lengthen the energy stream, you may very well wind up being able to connect a long stream with an enemy inside, and there ya go. It's not going to happen in every single battle, but it's definitely something to try for.

I got a Hippo myself...and it packs a wallop when allied with the Big Bear I have. Between the Hippo having the Yawn command that can put an enemy to sleep and the Big Bear having a 4-hit combo that can easily accumulate a LOT of damage against an opponent that doesn't have DEF...it's a deadly combo (both can't be countered, at least that I know of yet).

I might think of getting a Fairy Fire and Gremlin (the box one) in my party though. The Fairy Fire has EXTREMELY long range for magic attacks (and if I so choose, Purify) and the Gremlin...well...it doesn't have very good move ability and it's HP is low, but it DEF/RES are well in the high hundreds range at an early level. So if I slap on a Raise HP/Raise SPD and go for broke trying to max his stats on that option...he'll be a walking tank that progressively gets faster/more move ability.

EDIT: Through Ch. #4 now. Got the good ending. And since I had a bad ending in #3...I did a little side searching and came up with a 'special' ally...and lemme tell you...he's...cute.

The Gremlin and Fairy Fire I got. But hell...end of Ch. #4 I was half-tempted to get one of the monsters you're supposed to evade and I ended up killing anyways...but I figured it would take as long to get if not longer than the Gremlin (which took about 15 Purify attempts at about 30 Purification Power a pop) so I would've been killed by it before I got it.

OMG bump looky here!

And four layouts done for this series. I'm up to Chapter 10 of 12, btw. My brain is fried by how hard it has become (has died twice horribly, Ch. 7 and this one).
