can spot the differences between two different files?

For example, if I would like to find out where the time variable in a file (that already has an editor) is, I'd copy a level file, set the time on one to 350 seconds and the other to 500 seconds, and use the file to search for an instance where the location of the 350 is the same as the location for a 500 is.

Confusing, I know.

The last two require GNU Diffutils. You can get Windows versions at http://www.cygwin.com/. If all you want is Diffutils, unselect all packages and select Diffutils. The setup program will only download the needed packages.

DOS also has a file-comparing command. Just type:

fc /b file1 file2

If there are a lot of differences between two files, you can add | more to the end of the string, which will make it pause when the screen gets full. Or, to output to a file, add > filename (where filename is the name of a text file you want to output the list to).

There are quite a few hex editors with advanced, 'resynchronizing' compare functions. At the moment, I can't think of any that are freeware. The one you'll see recommended a lot is Hex Workshop. There are others, just as good or better, but workshop is the most popular as far as I can tell.

The compare functions in these hex editors are rather thorough. Additionally, the interface is usually good enough to quickly jump between the additions/deletions/modifications that you can sum up the differences between most files in less than a minute.

Since you only asked for a way to compare files, I won't bother going into any details about other features of said hex editors.

you can just write a hex compare yourself. I use HEXCOM which is a DOS program I wrote for DogSoft years ago.

as stted before, Hexworkshop does this quite well if you can find a crack or keygen floating around the web [do not confuse this with shameless endorcement of piracy ], it's all you'll ever need.

Try HexCompare... I used it a couple times for a few reasons. Takes hex of file A and File B, then highlights the differences... quite handy
