Did it have to do with what time of year it was when he saw the bird?

Maybe the bird is a woodpecker and as some woodpeckers like dead trees, the man knew that his precious tree that he liked so much had died

The tree was precious to the man. The bird sitting in the tree was some kind of bird known to feed on beetle larvae that live inside trees (for example a woodpecker), beetle larvae are capable of killing trees and as the bird had found an interest in the tree, the man knew that it had been infected with the larvae and would almost certainly die.

Ok i think i know this one.

The bird was a vulture or some kind of bird that eats dead animals, he saw it perched and realized his prized animal was dead.

Well since we're almost done, I'm gonna throw out a wild guess. Maybe the man came home after work and his house had burned down, or his camper trailer got stolen, or the like... and a tree in his backyard that was normally obscured by it was visible. Or maybe his tent got stolen. You get the idea.. his home - or part of it - is gone, and he could see the tree (with bird) that it was originally blocking and knew that he'd lost his home, or part of it.

ziratha: No, but on the right track.
Jagori: Nope...

Probably wrong, but I can't think of anything else.
The man had a pond in his backyard, in the pond he had a fish that was vey precious to him but one day a bird came and killed and ate his poor little fishy, when the man saw his fishless pond and the bird in the tree, he realised what had happened. The poor man was very, very sad.

Well, he's not robbing the bank, that would be too easy... Is he wearing the mask to disguise himself?
