Question 47: The Oldest Likes Chocolate.

'The following conversation took place between an official at the Social Security office and a claimant for child benefits...
"How many children do you have?"
"Three,"
"What are their ages?"
"The product of their ages is 36,"
"You will have to give me more information"
"The sum of their ages is equal to the number of the shop opposite this office"
"That is still not enough."
"Thats right. The oldest likes chocolate"
What are the ages?'

Unless two of them are twins, the only possible combination of 3 numbers less than 18 that have a product of 36 is 2, 3, and 6. They are 2, 3, and 6 years old.

.......................

Where do you get the 18 from?

36 can be made by 1, 4, 9, and 1, 3, 12....

As well as 9, 2, and 2 (leaving an oldest to still like chocolate), 3, 3, 4, and 1, 2, 18...

Seriously, the 18. I'm not getting the 18. Are you saying children here? Cause I know that legal age of adulthood is 18, but social security is generally for older people.

Welfare, on the other hand, is different.

I think I'm too tired to be reading this question properly.

He said she's collecting child benefits for her 3 children. Once a kid turns 18, no more benefits for the parents.

i know the answer now, but I can't say it because I had to look up online how to solve it.

His children are 9, 2, and 2.

There are 8 combinations of ages that have a product of 36:
1 1 36
1 2 18
1 3 12
1 4 9
1 6 6
2 2 9
2 3 6
3 3 4

But when the man said their sum wasn't enough information, then the combination must be one with the same sum as another. Only two combinations have the same sum:
1 6 6
2 2 9

And only one of these has an oldest:
2 2 9

I don't know how to explain it....

Cut in half normally twice (making for slices), then cut its height in half

Question 49: Battle of the Sexes

'IN the despotic state of Roxobia, the government passed a decree which was aimed at reducing the population while increasing the number of boys available for military service. It stated that every family must stop having children after a girl is born. So, if a couples first child was a girl, then no more children were allowed. If a couple had 10 boys, then they could keep having children until a girl arrived. This law was rigorously enforced. If the chances of having a boy or a girl are equal, will there eventually be more boys that girls or more girls than boys. Did the government succeed in its two objectives?'

Im going to say no, because at first the number of men would surge, but since you cannot have children without women, the number of men would drop simply because the number of available woman of childbearing age would be so low.

ok, take my answer and amend it with this, the number of men would actually lower because, in a normal situation, there would be cases where there would be a girl born first, then boys afterwords. But this new law would prevent those cases from occuring. There would be a surge of men because there would be relatively less woman, not because there would be more men.

In addition to what Ziratha said, wouldn't the population dwindle because there'd be less of a woman/man ratio, resulting in less men to impregnate women due to the case where women are born first?

Ok, take what I said and add that the population would indeed dwindle because of less woman, so it would succeed in it's one goal while not succeeding in its other.

the part about there being more girls than boys or boys than girls wouldnt change

because if the parents broke up they could each have another child making the cycle the exact same as it was before

There'd be more girls than boys. If every household had all the kids they where alowed to have, every household would have a girl, but not every household would have a boy.
