Damn. Well, I was close.

And the level of water in the lock was lowered.

For the sake of argument, wouldn't it stay the same? Since the weight of the iron would already force the boat further downward, it'd raise the water level, then lowe when taken out of the boat and while it's n the air and being thrown, then raise the water level again when its volume was added to the lock...

I don't know what a "lock" or "pig iron" is, but I remember physics pretty well...

Yes, but I believe pig iron is very dense.

Im, gonna need a better explanation than that NSNick... let the uneducated people know how it is

Actually, you are going to have to explain every answer from now on

Well, density is only a function of volume. In fact, the greater the volume, the lesser the density, so wouldn't a higher density mean that the volume compared to the mass is lessened?

So if Pig Iron is very dense, then that means that the weight of the mass, pressing down on the larger volume of the boat, would cause the water level to rise. When the pig iron is thrown overboard, then the larger volume of the boat is lessened, meaning the volume of the boat placed underwater is replaced by the lesser volume of the pig iron itself.

So yeah, the water level would lower if this pig iron stuff is dense...

OK. Since the boat floats, its displacement/weight ratio is greater than that of the pig iron, which sinks rather readily. So if you were to take the weight of the pig iron off the boat and toss it in the water, there would be less overall displacement of water and hence, the level would drop.

Grey gets the points.

Basically, in the boat, the mass of the iron was displaced, but in the water, the volume was displaced.

Question 41: Egg timers

1) Turn both hourglasses over.
2) Once the 7-minute glass runs out, put the egg in.
3) When the 11-minute glass runs out, flip it over immediately.
4) When the 11-minute glass runs out a second time, the egg will have been in for 15 minutes. Take it out.

For the other way with the timers:

1) Put the egg in and flip both timers. (7, 11)
2) When the 7-minute timer runs out, flip it. (7, 4)
3) When the 11-minute timer runs out, flip the 7-minute timer (4, 0)
4) When the 7-minute timer runs out again, it will have been 15 minutes. Take the egg out.

First way with the jugs:

1) Fill the 3-pint jug. (3, 0)
2) Pour the 3-pint into the 5-pint. (0, 3)
3) Fill the 3-pint jug again. (3, 3)
4) Pour the 3-pint jug into the 5-pint until it is full. (1, 5)
5) Empty the 5-pint jug. (1, 0)
6) Pour the 3-pint into the 5-pint. (0, 1)
7) Fill the 3-pint. (3, 1)
8) Pour the 3-pint into the 5-pint. (0, 4)

Second way with the jugs:

1) Fill the 5-pint jug. (0, 5)
2) Pour the 5-pint into the 3-pint until it is full. (3, 2)
3) Empty the 3-pint. (0, 2)
4) Pour the 5-pint into the 3-pint. (2, 0)
5) Fill the 5-pint. (2, 5)
6) Pour the 5-pint into the 3-pint. (3, 4)
7) Empty the 3-pint. (0, 4)

Question 43: The Explorer

'An explorer wishes to cross a desolate desert on foot. It will take 6 days, but one man can take enough food and water for 4 days only. Fortunately, the local village can supply him with men that will act as bearers, but they charge 100 a day for their work. What is the least number of bearers he will need to make the journey, and what will it cost him (Funerals for bearers are 1000, so death is not an option!)'

The goal here is to get the man to survive for the first two days of the journey without using his own supplies, then using the supplies he carried for himself for the last four.

On the first day, three men set out from a village fully stocked (that's 12 sections of food). On the first night, they eat three sections of food, leaving 9 left over. The first bearer leaves the group and uses his one day's rations left over (because he gave his rations to the other two to keep them supplied, giving them 8 to eat) to get back to the village on the second day, while another bearer continues with the guy. On the second night, they each take a ration, leaving six left over. The bearer takes two for the two days he needs to get back, leaving the original guy with the four he needs to cross the desert for four days.

Two bearers. If they charge for both the journey and the return, it'll cost 600. If they only charge for the journey and fund the return themselves, it'll only cost 300.

Question 44: Water Transfer

'There are two glasses of equal size, glass A and B. A is empty and B contains some water. Half of glass B is poured into A. Once again, half of what is in B is poured into A. Once more, half of glass B is poured into glass A. At the end of 3 pourings, A is half full. How much water is left in B?'

1/14th of the glass is left.

1) Glass B started with 8/14 of a glass of water. (0, 8/14)
2) After the first pour. (4/14, 4/14)
3) Second pour. (6/14, 2/14)
4) Third and final pour. (7/14, 1/14)

Why is it impossible for all three couples to sit together?

Is the fact that only one couple sat together a criteria or is it a clue?

EDIT: Cause if it's a clue, then these problems are confusing the hell out of me in wording...

EDIT2: LOLZ 777 REPLIES. Am I lucky yet?

The man bought 19 plates, 1 spoon, and 80 beads.

19 + 1 + 80 = 100 items
19($5) + 1($1) + 80($.05) = $95 + $1 + $4 = $100
