a friend and i were having a conversation about tomb raider chronicles after i lent it to him to try. it basically went like this:

-Tomb Raider Chronicles is a very bad game.
~in your opinion
- when I press jump I'm expecting it to jump. when I press shoot, I'm expecting the dogs to die
~i've never had any trouble with that... in all the years i've played the series. never.
-when I press sidestep, I'm expecting to step to the side
~You just can't work the controls. its most likely THAT simple
-but most of all, when I play a game in which guns are involved, I'm expecting to be able to move horizontally to the side while still facing forward. this process is known to the gaming populace as "strafing", in which the hero moves like that and is still able to aim forward. It's a brilliant evasive tactic, and you'd expect Ms. Croft to be able to do it
~she can. learn to play it before you completely condemn it.

So, i'm kind of ticked off. First off, i hate how just because this person refuses to admit TR is a good game, he tries as hard as he can to find something wrong with it immediately. Secondly, as with all gaming conversation the 2 of us seem to have, he takes on this condescending "i'm better than you in all things gaming" tone. he seems to speak to me as if he's better than me, when he isn't. when it comes down to it, we are most likely equals in the gaming arena, but our skills both lie in different games, as does our interest obviously. but i'm getting off topic. here is my question... is my friend's argument valid? or do you think he should give the game more of a chance before he makes these accusations... if you've played the series before, have you had any of the same problems or am i the only one who doesn't seem to think that the controls in TR Chronicles are all that difficult to work?

I stopped playing the Tomb Raider games awhile ago but still, never had any problems with the control. Good games overall.

I tried a Tomb Raider game a long while ago, didn't like the control scheme, never picked up on the games. That doesn't mean I think they're bad, just don't like the control scheme. Like Resident Evil.

Ah, nick, thats the difference between you and my friend. you gave a valid reason why you DONT LIKE the game. you did not just rant about unfounded accusations and say "THE GAME IS REALLY BAD". i appreciate your input. idont appreciate my friend's gaming prejudice.

She's talking about me. I'm the idiot friend.

Anyway, I've really got no problems with the game, I just like to piss people off sometimes. It's really really fun (pissing people off, that is), because I don't get to do it too often. I played the game, and I have played it for some time now. It just takes some time to adjust myself to the controls.

I never said in all caps THE GAME IS REALLY BAD, I am not prejudiced against the game (note that I tried playing the game before saying I wasn't fond of it because of a few small problems I figured I'd exploit to make her angry), and none of my accusations are unfounded, considering that they come from my own experiences, which were what I found the game to be like.

Deflating hyperbole is like popping a balloon. It makes a loud noise as it goes, and then suddenly you realize it wasn't that big a deal to begin with.

I played the first, 2, 3, Revalations and Chronicles, oh yeah and the newest one to the PS2. The controls, eh yeah they can get annoying but I usually get used to them and continue on with playing the game. My sister just beat the 2nd one. Before then we never beat any TR. We never had the patience. We screwed up on Revalations or Chronicles. We used the skip level code too much and now the levels go in circles. 3 or 4 levels .

Angel of Darkness would have been good if it didn't have so many bugs. We can't go past that golden room thingy. I forgot the name, sorry but it says disc error and loads in the same place so obviously we can't finish the game. I think it's either our PS2 or the game itself. I dont know if anyone else had the problem. My PS2 has been screwing up a lot lately, well for the past few years so I'm guessing it most likely will be that. We rented the same game but different disc and it did the same thing..eh.I wonder if a brand new one would do the same along with a new PS2. We'll try that out later when we do get a new one.

i used to love the TR series.

TR1 was one of my first Playstation experience and it was the type of game that all my friends could play in terms of puzzle sovling. to this day, i have proud memories of figuring out the trick to beating that giant leggless boss.

TR2 was a game beyond belief for me. It was the TR that I actually beat on my own (of course I used the weapons cheat, but seriously, shouldn't all games have infinite ammo?)

TR3? hmmwell. naw, dont really care for it. but crouching and sprinting was born here so all is well.

TR4 was an awesome step towards TR2 glory while putting laura were she belonged the whole time, the tombs of Eygpt! 'cept i hated the lack of weapons.

TRC, kinda liked it. Surprisingly the level without any weapons was my favorite.

neverplayed TR: Dark Angel. looks sweet though.

my only true disappointment is that there werent enough monsters in the series as they were in TR1. i like giant legless monsters.

I hated them all. I can't stand 3rd person shooters. Plus the control scheme just made me a little too mad. He arguement isn't justifiable, but he is allowed to say the game sucks because (he thinks) the game sucks. I couldn't stand it after the first one so I never played ever again. I don't think I even beat the first level in TR1 just hated those controls so much!

hm, i'll list them in order that i've played them.
TR2- a classic. i loved it. it was my first tr experience and it was phenomenal. the graphics at that point were not anything HUGELY advanced, but they had their moments during the cinematics. but what really made the game for me was its replayablility. i've played that game so many times its hard to remember how many.
TR3- eh. i dont like it that much.
TR4- pretty good, i liked the egypt thing, although i hated von croy, he was not the best developed character
TRC- very cool, i liked how it didn't follow a continuous storyline and there wasn't ONE major goal you were going towards instead you were playing out different adventures that had already happened.
TR1- i haven't really tried it yet. i bought it and played like the first level, but now that i have angel of darkness, i really haven't payed all that much attention to the original.
AOD- OH MY GOD. it is FANTASTIC so far. i mean, the graphics are out of this world compared even to the last installment of TR. and while you're playing the game and think ing that they must have spent all their time on graphics and nothing else, the game has a replayability rivaling that of TR2, which to me, has the best replayability of them all (so far, i haven't gotten through 1 or AOD) . and the storyline is, to me, the best of all the other games, because all the others have Lara searching out some obscure artifact, but this game is unique in the fact that lara is running from the law who thinks she killed her mentor, all the while trying to solve for herself who really did. i can't wait to finish the game so i can play it again and again and again :-D
