I wanted to know for a ROM hack. Should it be one of those kinds of games that takes you a month of solid play time, or the kind you can finish in a week?

I personnaly like Long and Hard. I like it when there is more strategy involved than Leveling Up or Upgrading (depending on the type of RPG). That's why I take most challenges avaible for a game (like FF7's SCNMIE challenge)

Long and Hard. Anyone playing a rom hack should have beaten the original before playing the hack. I, for one, don't want to play an easier or shorter version of any game. It would be like going from FF4 Hard type to FF4 Easy type...almost....

I love a challenge, and all the side-quests. Therefore, I like the long and hard RPGs. I wouldn't want an easier or shorter version of any game I've beaten.

I don't like when it's too easy, but I don't like when you have to level up alot becuse of the difficulty. I HATE levelling up with the same enemy over and over again in RPG's. ~_~

The length isn't so importnat to me, but if you make it very long it can be dull at times.

Long and hard. More play time is better, and if it is difficult, it adds to that length. If it is developed with a creative aspect in mind, then it is great to encounter new and unique things. I find that once you have almost beaten a very long game, and you come back to an early area it can be almost emotional.

There are so many oppurtunities to make immature jokes in this topic...too many infact.

I like my games to have a lot of playtime...maybe not as difficult, but medium.

Hm... Can't really pick one of those options. See, I don't mind a short RPG if it's fun and has a good storyline. At the same time, I really like to sink my teeth into a long, detailed RPG - but I could find myself losing interest if it's too long or the difficulty's out of whack.

I personally prefer long and difficult.
It should start out easy, to give me a chance to get used to the game, but it should have a more-or-less steady increase in difficulty -- although towards the end the difficulty should start to really increase -- I beat sooo many RPGs way too easily because the last parts of the game were barely any more difficult than the parts before them.

I love Romancing SaGa 3, since it is one of the hardest RPGs ever, even for all people who like to level a lot (you need insanely high stats to be able to even survive the final boss quite a while ), and until I could take out Forneus' () and Destroyer's () lights, it took quite a long time.

The difficulty should increase gradually and should challenge the player indeed, but I hate really lame attacks in RPGs as for essential bosses, like

- damages which are higher than the max. HP of a character
- attacks which affect the entire party and kill a high number of them, non_blockable
- multi-hit attacks combined with an insane high speed

If it's an optional boss, it doesn't disturb that much since you don't need to kill it to proceed.

But I really like challenging bosses which have shitloads of HPs, not like the most FF final bosses, like Kefka who can be wiped out very easily (despite the fact he's the coolest and best baddie from all )

I want my RPG to be very long, so I can occupy myself for hours on end. Lots of fun sidequests are a plus (Chocobo H&C in FF9 is my favorite still ). I also want to be challenged, but not the "Get touched and your whole party dies and your memory card explodes" hard. I want to have to use my 50 ethers, 75 Hi potions and 40 phoenix downs, but not before I reach my goal.

Well, if you just use your mass items and just do repetitive stuff, it's no real challenge alone
In Romancing SaGa 3, as I already took that example, you cannot refill your MP and TP in battle; potions need to be "equipped" like weapons, and since you have five slots, you cannot take more than 5 items with you - and you probably want to use two slots for sword and shield usually; and MPotions and TPotions even cannot be equipped

So you'll maybe WANT to do the same tactics when encountering a boss, but since you need to watch your values, there's an end - no 15 TP left - no powerful "Dragon Inferno" tech anymore
In Rudra no Hihou you'll have to deal with a final boss, having approx. about70k HPs in total; and there's NO mass 3k, 4k etc. dmg tech/spell in FF (in three forms, and in every form she has other weak/strong points; if you made a bad selection, you'll be _very_ vulnerable if defended against a certain element but double as weak against the opposite element ), you can carry only 9 pieces of each HP/TP recovering item.

And something like "Elixir" in FF (Amrita), I found TWO of them in the entire game, at least they revive dead characters as well

We, I went off topic. But as for my suggestion, HH, make the player to think tactically; make the powerful spells really MP-consuming, like in an FF6 editor putting Ultima to 250 MP or other; and if possible, I would suggest a limit in items - even Tales of Phantasia didn't allow you to take more than 15 from each item - and long caves like the Molaria Gallery had quite high enemy encounter rates

That was the thing I disliked the most about FF5: I beat ExDeath the VERY FIRST TIME I TRIED!

I used a party of all Samurai's... and I'd never even bothered to level the Samurai class!
I had 4 level 2 Samurai's, and still mopped the floor with him.

So, HH, whatever you do, make the final boss something that can't be beaten the very first time you try, on your very first time through the game (unless you're some kind of RPG-playing God or something ).

You thought Golden Sun was a medium? I thought it was easy, I didn't even notice that the final boss was the final boss. Seriously, I thought it was just another fight against those recurring people until I beat them, then I realized I had hit the end of the game. Never played Golden Sun 2 though.

I like my RPGs long and challenging, and I DO like the kind of games where you touch the boss and your entire party dies, the memory card explodes and your PS2 gets horribly maimed. It really has been so long since I played one of those, I think the last truly challenging RPG I've played was Earthbound, and then only because I was so young when I played it.

Comedy's also an issue in RPGs, if I can't laugh at the game I don't really wanna play it. FF6 was way overdramatic at times, but then you had guys like Edgar and the Mogs bringing in some lightheartedness. Earthbound was the funniest RPG I've ever played, and I still play it today. Now I wanna tackle Albert Odyssey, cause I heard it's so funny. Sometimes challenge doesn't exactly equate to entertainment, that's where comedy comes in.

longer games are always better as long as they catch your imagination and get you truely believing in the story.
