Off: The results and comments below are about the game Super Smash Bros. Melee for Nintendo's Gamecube

____________________________________________________________________

Back on the old board, I had created a serie of polls.

The subjects of these polls were:

"Which character has the strongest offense?"
"Which character has the most endurance?"

Well... I've decided to bring back these polls on the new board for those who never read them on the old board (or had not joined yet)! However, this time, unstead of making two polls... I'll simply post the stats and let you post comments.

SSBM HEAVY-HITTERS

Once and for all, here are the results! The characters are classed in order from the strongest (1) to the weakest.

HOW IT WORKS

In order to calculate the characters' offensive strenght, I used the Homerun Contest game mode (since it show how far the target has been sent flying... and since the target doesn't change when you change character). The distance/flying ratings shown below are those for the characters' fully-charged foward smash attack. According to my calculations, usually, all the smash attacks for each characters have pretty much the same power level. However, there are sometimes very big differences between the power level of smash-type moves and the normal moves. A little reminder... the characters are classed according to their raw power, not their usefulness. It is not becease Pichu is the single most-powerful character that he's all-powerful, far from it. A skilled Fox player could beat an average Pichu player easily... even if Fox is the second-weakest while Pichu is the strongest.

Little interesting note... if you make an average of the characters' strenght for all of their moves, you will find out that (if you do not include special moves), the strenght of their frontal smash attack is proportional to the average raw power for all of their (normal) moves when compared to the other characters.

Special moves are not taken into account in the list.

On to the results!

THE ACTUAL RESULTS:

(Exemple: #: Character's name (distance for frontal smash attack/damage for frontal smash attack)

1: Pichu (85,6/20)
2: Roy (73,4/27)
3: Bowser (70,8/32)
4: Ice Climbers (54,7/36)
5: Mr. Game & Watch (37,4/24)
6: Captain Falcon (35,4/27)
7: Link (35,1/35)
8: Pikachu (35,1/28)
9: Zelda (34,7/22)
10: Ness (33,4/27)
11: Dr. Mario (32,4/25)
12: Peach (31,8/16)
13: Marth (30,5/19)
14: Falco (30,1/23)
15: Donkey Kong (28,5/27)
16: Young Link (24,2/24)
17: Mario (22,6/24)
18: Yoshi (20,3/21)
19: Jigglypuff (19/23)
20: Ganondorf (18,7/30)
21: Samus (18,3/19)
22: Kirby (13,1/20)
23: Luigi (10,4/17)
24: Fox (1,6/20)
25: Mewtwo (0/16)

MY COMMENTS ABOUT THE RESULTS

Mewtwo: I was surprised that Mewtwo ended up the weakest of all characters. It is quite simple: his attacks does not knock the targets off the arena. Mewtwo has only two effective ways of terminating his foes: his downward smash attack and his Shadow Ball. While his damage and distance ratings are laughable, Mewtwo make up for it with even more combo potential than Fox's! You aren't really trying to master Mewtwo if you can't easily score 3 consecutive hits on a target once you begin striking it.

Donkey Kong: The 2nd strongest character in the game in the N64 version... and now barely average. Donkey is no longer a hard-hitting character which is surprising. However, he still does incredible amounts of damage and his speed has been increased... a LOT. Furthermore, he got Giant Punch, one of the game's strongest moves. That must count for something, right?

Mr.Game & Watch: I was surprised to find this guy way up in the list. Mr.Game & Watch's attacks are as deadly as they are weird. Also, Mr.Game & Watch has the potential to do the most damage in the whole game with his Bucket. Use it to store 3 of Samus's charge shots and let it fly. 110% damage is a lot, you know!

Pichu: I really did not espected this. The character who earned the title of "weakest" character in the trophies descriptions is, in fact, the game's strongest character. Pichu's mix of stupidly fast normal attacks and ridiculously powerful smash attacks makes him a living weapon in the hands of a master. In fact, his only true weaknesses are his low endurance and the fact that he's very difficult to master. Definitely a skill-type character. I was a little surprised to see that the strongest character does not have the game's strongest move. Pichu's Skull Bash (his strongest move) is, in fact, the game's second strongest move. While it's not the strongest move, it's very close to be the strongest (and it's also one of the very few moves than can kill Bowser in 1 or 2 hits)!

Roy: I knew Roy was strong... but I did not espect him to be second only to Pichu in terms of raw power. Roy share far more with Pichu than you would espect. Both have stupidly high power levels, needs to be close to their foes to actually hurt them, and have next to nothing in terms of endurance. Both of them even hurts themselves when attacking! However, Roy inflict far less damage to himself than Pichu. Roy's main advantages on Pichu are the fact that he isn't completely weak defensively and that he got the game's strongest move. The sound of Roy's Flare Blade charging is more than enough to send almost any player running for cover... and I understand them. If the poor target is lucky enough to survive the attack, they'll notice that their damage meter has increased by a whopping 50%.

Pikachu: Once one of the weakest characters in the first game, Pikachu is quite strong in this game. While he can't compare to his earlier version (Pichu) in terms of raw power, Pikachu doesn't harm himself and has better range. Also, his normal moves does more damage than Pichu's (but aren't as fast). Pikachu's Skull Bash is a LOT weaker than Pichu's but is still lethal... only you'll have to strike your target several times to terminate it.

Ganondorf: While I was not surprised to see that Captain Falcon has a high level of power, I was VERY suprised to see that Ganondorf was, in fact, weak. I even wonder what's more surprising... Pichu as the most powerful character or Ganondorf being weaker than Young Link? However... do not let Ganondorf's weak distance ratings make you think that Captain Falcon is the way to go... Ganondorf, just like Donkey Kong, does obscene amounts of damage when he strikes. While Ganondorf's attacks are quite weak, when it takes only 3 or 4 hits to pump your target's meter all the way to 100%, does it really matter?

Peach: I espected Peach to be a total weakling... but while she didn't turned out to be an incredible surprise like Pichu, she did turned out to be much stronger than espected! Peach is definitely not weak. In fact, she's more or less in the middle of the list. While Peach's attacks aren't weak at all, there is still the fact that she has difficulty to both damage and kill her target. Her attacks are too strong to rack up damage but too weak to finish off foes.

Mario: I espected him to be in the middle of the list... but he turned out to be weak. Just like most "weak" characters, Mario make up for it with amazing combo abilities. Mario's ability to combo up foes has been greatly improved since the first game and while he's a "weak" character, he is still relatively strong and versatile thus making him good in almost any situation.

Marth: Along with Peach, Marth is pretty much in the middle of the list. I espected him to be at the top with Roy but he isn't... While Marth is definitely a LOT weaker than Roy, Marth make up for it with a much longer range than Roy's. In fact, fighting the target at a medium-long range is even encouraged as the farther Marth is from his target, the harder he strikes. Just like Pichu, Marth is very hard to master but once mastered, he will allow you to overpower nearly any foe.

SSBM ENDURANCE TEST

Unfortunately, I lost the list on which I had written the results for the SSBM Endurance Test. However, I do remember who are the strongest characters and the weakest characters in terms of endurance... I shall eventually update this but for now... I think these (incomplete) results and comments should be OK.

HOW IT WORKS

Endurance is calculated on what I call the "Flare Scale". Everyone knows that the more a move is used, the weaker it gets, isn't it? Well, by using Roy's fully-charged Flare Blade at the minimum power level, I found out that it was easy to calculate a character's endurance. A character's endurance is the character's ability to survive attacks. Endurance varry on several factors. The character's actual defense (how far does it fly when struck). The character's recovery ability (how far it can return from). The character's damage meter (DUH!). The character's location when struck (again... DUH!). And the attack used (one... two... three... DUH!).

The main problem with calculating endurance was that, for the scale used to be effective, the factors know as "Damage meter", "Location", and "Attack used" must be eliminated. By using the Flare Scale, I was able to calculate effectively the characters' endurance without worrying about the character's location or damage meter screwing up the results.

THE RESULTS (incomplete)

1: Bowser
2: Donkey Kong
3: (draw) Yoshi & Samus
...
25: (draw) Zelda & Roy

MY COMMENTS

Pichu: While I lost the list containing my results, I remember that Pichu scored higher than Zelda and Roy which is surprising. While Pichu's defense is among the lowest, Pichu's recovery ability is really amazing. Still, since his defense is so low, Pichu is far from being the reference in case of endurance.

Roy: Roy has a pretty high defense rating... but he suffer from the same problem that Link suffered in the first game. While his defense is fine, his recovery ability is laughable thus making him, along with Zelda, the most-easily killed character in the game.

Zelda: While Pichu's defense is laughable, Zelda's really is rock-bottom. There is no attack that doesn't send her flying sky high. Even her incredibly high recovery ability can't save her. Along with Roy, she's the most-easily killed character in the game.

Sheik: One may notice that I did not include Sheik in the attack list... a mistake that shall be hopefully fixed. Anyway, if I remember well, Sheik has FAR better endurance than Zelda's. While her recovery ability is low, Sheik has surprisingly high defense for what is supposed to be a speed-type character.

Bowser: Why was I surprised with him? I wasn't surprised that he was the strongest character in terms of endurance... I was surprised that he crushed everyone's else endurance ratings so much. If I remember well, Bowser has at least 5 or 6 more points of endurance than Samus and Yoshi (which is HUGE). It is quite simple: Bowser is an invincible tank and if you can beat up and terminate a skilled Bowser player under 45 seconds, I'll give you a medal.

Yoshi: Everyone knows that he lack a third jump... but that doesn't stop him from being the 3rd most endurant character in the game along with Samus. While he's not as insanely resistant as Bowser, Yoshi still has a very high defense rating. Obviously, Yoshi really doesn't need that third jump!

Donkey Kong: The second most endurant character, Donkey Kong was once the most endurant character in the first game and in this one, he's only beaten by Bowser. Donkey has rock-hard defense and outstanding recovery abilities. While Donkey Kong is sent farther when hit, he can return from longer distances. However, due to his higher defense, Bowser is better than Donkey Kong in terms of endurance... but not that much.

Samus: If you were a seasoned Samus player in the first game, you'll notice that Samus fly farther when hit in this game... thus, I espected everybody's favourite bounty hunter to be quite lower in the list... but she's equal to Yoshi in terms of endurance. Samus share a lot with Yoshi, endurance-wise. Both have extremely high defense ratings but not so great recovery abilities. Samus's defense is just a bit lower than Yoshi's but her recovery ability make up for it... but not enough to allow her to beat Yoshi.

CONCLUSION
===========

Well... I'm pretty much finished. It's now your turn to post comments! So... what do you think? Did I made mistakes? Is there a better way I could calculate the characters' stats? Or did you took your time to calculate stats and got different results?

Also... since this post is LONG, there must be some mistakes (maybe, even, a lot of mistakes). Ignore them or, if it really bother you that much, PM me.

There's a far more complete list somewhere on Smash World Forums. Dunno where it is, it was posted over a year ago. I don't go there anymore.
