For some bizarre reason, MSPaint is being particularly slow, especially when opening large image files. This has never been a problem before and is incredibly annoying. I don't know what's causing it, it's acting a bit like there is no memory, or like other programs are using up the priority or something, but nothing has changed in that respect so I don't know what's causing it. I've checked for bugs and spyware with no sign of anything. The last thing I was doing before it happened was playing on Zsnes, but rebooting the computer isn't helping.

I'm stumped...

EDIT: It seems to be solved for the time being; it may of been cuased by low disk space, for SOME reason. I deleted a few files and it's working fine at the moment, but of course it could end up being like it was next time I turn it on. So, a bit of help would still be very welcome.

Generally, running low on disk space without doing much in the way of actually manuipulating is your local friendly swapfile-- it tends to love making HD's bottom out at 0 bytes free [I've done it myself many times], and that's generally a very bad thing.

If you have a slow HD and your RAM's totally taken up, it'll resort to the swap file [which it uses even when not full for little crap that almost never changes] which will mean anything that requires changing it [such as, say, editing a pixel] will take rediculously slow.

MS Paint sucks at memory management [much like most of Windows, unfortunately] but restarting does tend to help.

Unfortunately with me I don't get slowdown problems, I just get to the point where Paint refuses to do anything... it won't even display the image properly

Yes, what you describe there was a lack of memory. That's not what this was. This was a significant shift in speed. It fixed itself when I deleted some unnecessary crud on the computer, but even if I hadn't I would still of had one GB of free space, so I don't understand why that was slowing down Paint.

It might be that one of the files I deleted was somehow affecting Paint. It started going wrong after I took some screenshots on Zsnes... I deleted those screenshots along with a few other things, and it fixed itself. For now, anyway; I haven't restarted since it started going right again.

But what you said about the 'swap file' might be it. Whatever that is. O.o''

I have a simple question, how much free space did you had before you deleted some files? And how much RAM do you have?

And yeah, Win9x suck at memory mangament. Linux and Windows2000/XP have better memory managment.

Look after a big file in c:, you probably have the swap file there. It's usually over 100 MB.

... Ok that was wierd. One GB of space is more than enough for good Swap. Have you checked the preferences for the swap? Right click on my computer and select properties, select the "advanced" tab and check after some swap option there. I don't have the English version so I don't know the exact names.

STOP ADVERTISING LINUX.

Ahem!

Anyway, it'd be nice to know what kind of trashcan you're running [I've got the TrashCan300 running, heh] and the `pecs of it to find out just what in the hell might be going on

Personally I've taken about 100 screenshots in ZSNES, had some fun and it never broke for me

Wierd. Heh.
