... no, that's how it works in Zelda 1, Zelda 2 too

"Save and Continue" (at any moment) was only introduced on the SNES one ...

How to bring up The Secret Save Screen
For this code you need Two Controllers. On controller 1 Press start. On controller 2 Press Up and A at the same time. This will bring up The Secret Save Menu. So now you don't have to die to save. (From Gamefaqs)

It's easier on the Gamecube version, on the gamecube version you just have to goto the inventory screen (by pressing start) and press X.

Hidden duality, isn't that a Zelda Classic quest? If so, there should be a quick save on the menu. If it's not a ZC quest, then download it anyway, I hear it's good.

Why not simply save the state? then you can save whenever without dying. If u screw up the save state with keyboard shortcuts (say accidently hitting S for save state when you die instead of L for load state), just delete the most recent .sav file which will be in the same dir as the original rom

Yes, but then you risk having lost whatever you've done all around unless you save to different states.

I've done it myself quite a few times. Save to a different state after everything major you do [or just use 1+2]
