That's what I was thinking of at the time, 1.04%, for some reason. I knew I should have put 0.04%...

Increasing the rate by 0.04 percentage points (to use a clearer term) would be normal, yeah. I had something like this at a bank in the US where I got 2.00% in the first year, 2.05% in the second year, etc., but there was a cap somewhere down the line.

And did you just change the next problem immediately after posting it?

Yes. It was wrong, I realized. That's why I changed it.

OK, gotcha. Well, if my solution to either of your problems is the right one and you post another one right away, I'll refrain from answering right away since it wouldn't be fair with us both online at the same time.

Well I thought you meant it would increase each year by x1.04, and that would be applied to the increase from the previous year, so 4 x 1.049, 9 because obviously the first year has no increase. I don't think the question was very clear, but if I got it wrong, I got it wrong.

GB, your analysis is right, but that's the interest rate only in the 10th year. You have to apply the smaller rates in the years leading up to that; i. e. 4 x1.042 in year 2, 4 x 1.043 in year 3, etc.

Since the interest rate is a function of time, I'm guessing that you'd need to use a sum (sigma). Something involving "the sum from k=1 to 10 of (0.04 + 0.0104k)"; I'm too tired to give it any real effort. I myself calculated each term using a spreadsheet to get the value after 10 years.

BTW, do either of these two sigmas display on Western PCs? : Σ ∑

Away from compound interest, and interest in general, for now.

Question 56 (1 point)-

What are the next 2 numbers in the series?

1, 5, 29, 259, #, #

The relationship is:

1x2+3=5
5x4+9=29
29x8+27=259

The multiplied number doubles each time, while the added number triples.

8x2=16, 27x3=81 >>> 259x16+81=4225
16x2=32, 81x3=243 >>> 4225x32+243=135443

1, 5, 29, 259, 4225, 135443 is the pattern.

Got it!

1 = 11 + 0
5 = 22 + 1
29 = 33 + 2
259 = 44 + 3
3129 = 55 + 4
46661 = 66 + 5

45w-45x+56y-54x=20

That should be "54z", not 54x, right?

This one looks a little more tedious than the last...

Same here. When they are solved they aren't at all complicated, but the actual process of figuring them them out is tough. Damnit Heian beat me to the last one! Arg...

GB, thanks to one of Nick's puzzles, I suddenly remembered that 4^4 was 256, and that 259 was really close to that. But I don't see why we're required to magically divine what pattern is in the problem-presenter's head. Any valid pattern should earn credit.

Anyway, here's my attempt at the latest ordeal. Forgive the somewhat-ugly mixed fractions:

w = 5 26/55
x = 20 26/55
y = 16 7/22
z = -29/22

JJ, this can't be what you're looking for, but if we were to define the Nth term as being:

(2n-3)(n-1)(2n-3) + (-1n)(10)(n-1)2

(don't worry, it only looks this complicated)

...we would get:

n=1... -10-1 - 0 = 1

n=2... 111 + 10 = 11

n=3... 323 -40 = 689

...and consequently:

n=4... 535 + 90 = 3051758215

n=5... 747 - 160 = 459986536544739960976641

n=6... 959 + 250 = roughly 8.728x1042

But this can't be the real answer...
