How do ya'll have your controls set up in FPS games? I'm betting that most of you use the WASD setup (also known as the Half-Life setup):

WASD = Movement keys (Forward, Reverse, Strafe L & R)
Mouse = "mouselook"
Mouse Left = Fire
Mouse Right = Secondary fire
Mousewheel = Weapon select
Space = Jump

Well, I know this'll sound weird as shit, but I use an alternate setup:

Mouse Left = Forward
Mouse Right = Reverse
Mouse Sidebuttons = Strafe L & R
Mouse = "mouselook"
Ctrl = Fire
Shift = Secondary fire
Mousewheel = Weapon select
Space = Jump

I know, I know, you're looking at me as if I am absolutely nuts. "How can that feel natural to you?" "Doesn't that mess you up?"

Well, I've been using this setup for years, since Quake and Quake II, I believe. I tried switching to the "standard" WASD setup, but I couldn't damn near play at all.

Anyway, what sort of setup do you use, and how crazy do you think mine is?

Depends on which type of FPS. Doom, Duke nukem and so on... = doom controllers. (arrow keys for moving around)

In the newer ones I just use WASP, I had some problems getting used to it at first after playing Doom.

Pretty much the standard WASD setup, but I tend to have to tweak the controls a bit for Halo PC.

Oh, and you cannot forget inverted.

Mine are sorta funny... I only use the keyboard for sidestepping and jump (period, comma, space), Mouse1 for primary fire, and Mouse2 for moving forward.

WASD

R for reload

Space / right click is jump (depends on game)

left click is shoot

scroll is change weapon

if applicable, Q and E are lean.

WASD?!?

NEVER. I always use the arrow keys for movement ever since the Doom days. I'm not really used to using letter keys for ANY game (for movement, mind you).

WASD is pretty much the staple format now.

But I've been using my layout since UT and it's pretty much impossible to switch away from now...

EDIT: ....and I seem to have Reinfors now.

i'm a WASD user too...i dunno why CS starts off differently though anyways, i think my duck is V (or C) and my jump is Space...

my first FPS was Unreal, so that is probably what caused me to be a WASD...

oh yeah, AD are strafe...not turn left and right

Colleen, I too originally used the arrow keys, back in the days of Doom and even Jedi Knight. But then I gave WASD a try, and seriously, being able to move your finger not more than an inch to reload, active doors, duck, run, jump, display the map, etc and much more, is just something you can't pass up.

Here's how I have it in Duke Nuken 3D:

Arrow keys: Move
Shift: Run
A: Jump
Z: Crouch
, and . : Straife
Ctrl: Shoot
Space: Action (open doors, use keys, flip switches, etc)
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 and 0: Select weapon
~: Quick attack

All other keys are the defaults.
I don't use the mouse. That's why I didn't like CS.

In Doom and them old games:
AD=Strafe left/right
Arrows=Forward/Backwards, look left/right
Space=Shoot

Newer games:
WASD=Movement
Shift=Walk
Mouse=Looks, reversed
Left Mouse=Fire Primary
Right Mouse=Jump
CTRL=Fire Secondary
Space=Use
QE=Previous/next weapon
R=Reload
T=Talk
G=Drop

Movement--WASD
Primary Fire-left click
Reload-Mousewheel click!
Cycle thorugh weapons-mousewheel
Duck/crouch--Shift or Crtl depending on the game.
Action/Use--F

Pretty normal except for reload it seems.

ESDF = movement (forward, back, strafe left, strafe right)
mouselook on, always
inverted mouse pitch a.k.a. airplane-style (mouse up = look down, and vice-versa)
left mouse = fire
right mouse=
  • Quake games: jump
  • Unreal Tournament: alt-fire

middle mouse = move forward
scroll mouse wheel = scroll through weapons
shift=hold down to walk instead of run
alt=duck/crouch
c=zoom in (Q2/Q3), nothing in UT

F1=view scores (Q2, UT) or join red team (Q3)
F2=join blue team (Q3)
F3=join game (Q3)
F4=join spectators (Q3)

F5=talk
F6=talk (team channel)
F7=high FOV
F8=low FOV

F9=disconnect
F10=quit
F12=screenshot

suicide=Q in Q2/Q3, 1 in UT
~ = console
tab = show inventory (Q2), show scores (Q3), console one-liner (UT)

Space=
  • Quake 2, Quake 3: use item
  • Unreal Tournament: jump

that's a pretty generic config. where it differs is in the weapon keys, which are always laid out around the ESDF keys for quick access. it follows the same basic pattern among the different games:

Quake II

2 = Blaster
G = Shotgun
W = Super Shotgun
4 = Machine Gun
5 = Chaingun
B = Hand Grenades
T = Grenade Launcher
R = Rocket Launcher
3 = Hyperblaster
6 = Railgun
V = BFG10K

Quake III

2 = Gauntlet
4 = Machine Gun
W = Shotgun
3 = Grenade Launcher
R = Rocket Launcher
G = Lightning Gun
5 = Railgun
T = Plasma Gun
V = BFG

Unreal Tournament

Q = Translocator
2 = Impact Hammer or Chainsaw
4 = Enforcer
3 = GES BioRifle
6 = Shock Rifle
C = Pulse Gun
G = Ripper
T = Minigun
W = Flak Cannon
R = Rocket Launcher
5 = Sniper Rifle
B = Redeemer
A = select best weapon

where the common points:
2 = weakest weapon
4 = starting weapon (except in Q2)
W = close-range weapon
R = rocket launcher
long-range weapons are usually in the 5-6 area. the Q2 railgun and UT shock rifle are on 6, and they're so far away because I don't like either of those weapons. the Q3 railgun and UT sniper rifle are on 5, and I like those weapons better than the Q2 railgun or shock rifle.

these are tweaked over time.

I used the classic directional keys.

For jump I use control, for change weapon I use mouse wheel...And num 0 for duck.
