Just wondering. Be it graphics to palletes to blocks to just all around improvements [title screen, overworld, font, etc]... what is usually absent/lacking in most hacks lately?

Story. That's what I think is missing.... But I know that it's not so many of all hackers that know how to make a good story, at least i don't.

1: Readable status bars
Problem:
Hard to read status bars and sometimes, they change colors between levels. Really ugly.
Solution:
Keep your dirty fingers out of that palette!

2: Passable levels
Problem:
Most of the hacks in these days are almost impossible to finish without cheats or save states.
Solution:
Completely underestimate the players when designing the levels.

3: Graphic changes without rips
Problem:
Geez! Almost every single hack have got rips from SMAS and/or YI. It's not cool. It's boring.
Solution:
Use the standard GFX or make your own from scratch!

4: Mario feel
Problem:
Some hacks are missing the classic Mario feel.
Solution:
Use Mario inspired/based GFX and level design. It's not good if Mega Man X jumps into the game and shoots the head off Mario! Stomping Goombas, eating Mushrooms and saving the princess! THAT'S Mario!

5: Problem #5
Problem:
I can't think of any more problems right now.
Solution:
Make more lame hacks!

I made a 'major' change to my status bar, but I'm not sure people would like it. I switched the pallete, too.

About the graphics rip, it's better to use any GFX that isn't the original from smw. SMAS gfx is not bad, the problem is that people use the ones that come in DemoWorld.

Now, what i think that it's wrong in smww hacks:
6: ExGFX Workshop
Problem: No one rips anymore. They just ask/get GFX from ExGFX workshop.
Solution: Stop the workshop.
You might think "he hates the workshop omg", but it's not that. I've seen m ore than 5 hacks with graphics from the ExGFX workshop ONLY. People don't care about ripping anymore. The workshop made the MSW hacking something lame.

Actually, I agree with the status bar thing.

Lots of times, people do this unintentionally when they get backgrounds. It's even mentioned in the Help file [it's where I got the idea for mine]

People overwrite those colors so they can use their fancy colored backgrounds... which usually results in a VERY shitty colored status bar, especially since people tend to put alike colors together; ie, two very close shades of red in a, say, volcano background, resulting in this:

I fully agree. I always want to get my hacks as different from the original SMW as possible with the same game engine.

That 'Mario Feel" only applies if you're using the Mario grpahics.

If you don't want that 'mario feel' to apply, don't make it a Mario game. There are resources you can use to change Mario; do so.

Hacks are missing... a fully functional AND well done overworld... If the OW is malfunctional... theres a chance you wont EVER see the later levels...

And another thing, make it look good, okay. The gamer is going to spend alot of time there, so make it so they dont have to shut their eyes in pain every time they finish a level

if a hack is TOO hard, it is not fun, and a lot of hacks aren't fun, are stupidly hard.

some people think ''OMG11!! I AM ZEH W00TZ0R COZ MAH HACK HAVES A LOTTA OF EXGFX MY GRAFFICX RULES OMG I OWN TEH SUPPA MARRIA WORLDA HAXAN'' WORLDA OMG11!!!'' and they forget that the REAL chalenge of doing a good hack is to put a lot of effort in the levels so they will be fun and cool, and the player will find the game interesting, catchy.

I'm still waiting for someone to do some really neat shit with custom blocks. Sure, people have dabbled - with the bouncy blocks, gravity blocks, etc., but nothing too revolutionary. Also, it's a shame there's no custom sprites or music, but I guess that knowledge doesn't exist at the moment.

There's also a lack of neat secrets... DW:TLC did it well, but no one else really has.

I can agree with that. It's like a lot of sets lately wave "Look at me, I can rip graphics from other games!" in your face.

There are only so many times you can use the same GFX in your hack before it gets old

The one thing I would like to see in more hacks is changing Mario's GFX. I know there is one with Luigi, and some have his palette changed, I want to see a hack that has a different Mario, or maybe one that has nothing to do with Mario.

my plans are, after finishing Mario Legends, I'll make a hack that will be called Megaman Legends, w/ mario transformed into megaman x and all rips from megaman and other futuristic games. I ripped some stuff from F-Zero, but they were crap in a test level i made.

If you want to have it be a Mario feel, use Mario-esque GFX and ExGFX. If not, don't. That's my solution.

Yes, the status bar is a problem. I know it's an accident, but it's really something to watch.

No matter what you think, you're still making a Mario game, because it uses the engine. You're just making a Mario clone. Unless you know how to do a lot of ASM hacks, enough to change the engine enough, you';re still making a Mario game.

I don't see anyone in the Sonic hacking community try to make non-Sonic games using the Sonic engines. So why should it be different here? Even if you're playing a SMW hack with Pamela Freaking Anderson as the main character, you're still playing SMW. The only thing you've changed is the graphics.

If you're not going to make a Mario game, then at least change the main engine somewhat. Or, you're pretty much playing a Mario game, no matter what, because Mario games have that engine. If you don't want the Mario feel, change the engine, or hack a different game.
