Finally I got 3 worlds finished: Hoohoo Mountain, Beanbean Plains, and Chucklehuck Woods. If you see any glitches or corrections, please tell me. And ignore the extra things on the overworld-I just haven't found another place to put them yet.

I'll be adding more later, but here's the previous screenshots:

EDIT: Yay! Just what I was expecting. Pretty good level design with a small amount of slowdown, a hoard of graphical glitches, and vast overuse of around two custom blocks.

I stopped playing after the first two levels, but...

Level two: You call this a level? Also, expand upon the graphics. It's... a flashing dotted line... *below* where you stand... Also, the path after this is far too long and boring. Don't make long path tiles. They're evil ;-;

Level one: A little bit of slowdown. Vast overuse of breakable blocks. Pipes over shaky ground causing gaps underneath them (I told you about this earlier, too... *sighs* No one ever listens to me...)

Opening level: Not much to say, but, the pipe is inside the ground. This makes an ugly break from it. Gods, man, you just don't do that... It's ugly...

Intro movie: Pretty good. In fact, very good. Same slowdown and graphical glitches from level one, though. However, the way the letters are put together is unsightly. Put more time in to each letter so it flows well, don't use shortcuts. Another complaint: Give all your 8x8 tiles for the intro "priority". When they're on top of ground, about half the tiles just disappear...

Eh? No he doesn't At least, it hasn't glitched up on ME... If you're referring to the title screen thing, that's a priority problem, he could easily fix it.

Anyway, I played a little further, in to Hoohoo mountain. A saw a drop that used an unclean shave of blocks where... It pretty much looks like this, but in a different layout:



So yeah, see those cliffsides? I told him to even those out, but no, no one ever listens to me

Unlike some people, I played through the whole thing and...

Not bad. Graphical glitches in places, unnecessary shortcuts in other, and sprite slowdown and glitchyness in the rest. There is a nasty little bug in the first level in which you can slip under a ramp and die, and the layer 3 in the third castle . Not bad though. Grpahics look good.

All you need to do is clean up the whole thing and then polish it off.

My rating, 7/10. Not bad for a first time(Or at least I think)

Here is my review of Ultra Mario World 2, Demo 1.

Title - 8/10

Ok, the text looks a little weird, but it is original. But the priority problem needs to be fixed. Other than that, don't try to kill every enemy in the title screen for it to be perfect (mainly refering to the Chargin' Chuck part).

Graphics - 5/10

I see some handmade graphics, but you mainly just alter the original graphics to be different. Some of the sprites are cool, but their palettes can be messy in some levels. And you use the SMAS graphics. I don't hate them, but please be more creative... they are overused. Palettes are really messed up at some places.

Overworld - 7/10

It looks creative, but then there are the really loooonnnnngggggg paths. Please don't make them that long, as the events only show on the part that Mario is standing on. I saw lots of flashes going across the mountain after castle 1. Very weird...

Level Design - 5/10

I look through level design very thoroughly, and this level design... well... it was weird and not fun. Where should I start? Oh, there were capes in the first world. I don't like to add capes to the first world because then I can fly all the way across the level and not worry about any pits. Then there were the cacti... the first few fit ok, but that was because the black from the background covered up the bottom. It was sort of like the cacti were floating. Then there was the pipe of dispair... you enter it, you eat the Buzz Beetle and the Spineys (which were just red Buzz Beetles...), you exit out the other end, and then... you are trapped... not very funny. In fact, rather stupid. Then in BeanBean Castle, second part, the hallways are so narrow, you can't jump over the skeletons unless you walk through them and get hurt. I DON'T LIKE THAT!!! Also, there were also two cape powerups right next to each other... which makes me say that THERE ARE TOO MANY POWERUPS IN THIS GAME! Please remove some. I want some challenge, not "So easy I can beat it with one hand." And you use the same custom blocks over... and over. Plus there were no scrolling levels. I would like some scrolling levels.

Story - Not Rating

I don't have a clue what is going on, but SMW didn't have much of a story either, so I can't rate it.

Overall - 6/10

Level design sucks. I don't like it. The best thing in this hack was the title screen, but that wasn't perfect. Blocks were out of place, palettes really messed up (green fireballs?), and very little replay value. You better do better next time if you want me to play it again.

No you would bash his hack. You ALWAYS do to ANY hack.

I can only say that i liked the GFX. The level design is not that good (small levels) and the overworld was just...ew.

I admit the first and second worlds were a little bad, but I don't know how you think you can't get past the skeletons in Beanbean Castle without getting hit-you just jump up and hit them. It works EVERY time, and I got through that room without getting hit.

The ledges have been fixed in the hack.

Next demo, world 6. I will also fix up a few things.....

What did you think of Chucklehuck Woods?

I didn't catch those green fireballs, I had a cape in that level. Thanks for pointing it out...although I read what you (cpubasic) said and I don't think it deserves only a 6 based on what you said. (Some wasn't even true, like what I said in the first part of my post.)

*EDIT* If you want a challenge, try finding the secret exit in Chucklehuck Woods 2.

Although your game idea is neat and original, there are some tihngs that you have to fix in your hack:

1. the ow is too bland. put animated water in the waterfalls and put more trees and stuff over all that grass. The ow paletes and gfx changes are perfect, though

2. the level design is very poor. put more details, bushes, grass etc.

3. dont make a pipe look in a way in a level and make it look in other way in other level. that gives an ugly impression

4. dont make 'annoying' levels. that green switch palace was very boring, and the tiles were a bit ugly there too.

5. some levels are too short, make them longer and w/ more chalenges, more variety. explore all the possibilities of challenges that you can make in a level.

i hope this helps you doin an even better hack you have an original plot, just correct some things for thwe next demos

My rating:

Graphics [overall] - 71%
Graphics [peak] - 98% - Beanbean Plains 3 and the one mountain level look amazing.
Graphics [worst] - 40% - ack. SMAS stuff. Mostly used by people who have no sense of what looks good or those who just can't do any ExGFX but insist not to use the original stuff.
Soundtrack usage - 50% - sometimes doesn't fit at all.
Overworld - 60% - not the worst I've seen, but heavily lacking details.
Level design [graphics] - 74% - I liked the idea of the two-layered ground. But some mountain areas are heavily glitched, as Kyouji "Kagami" Craw already stated.
Level design [playability] - 69% - some n00bish mistakes like too compressed design or excessive use of the same kind of monsters.

What I liked:
- graphics in some levels
- palettes
- level diversity

What I didn't like:
- background in larry's castle!
- SMAS graphics
- lack of contrast in your own GFX (especially larry's castle platforms, add something like a black border)
- lack of contrast in the very first OV submap. Add something which makes a clear contrast to all that violet-blue stuff. Remember SMRPG's star mountain? If level 1 is Stardust Plains, sacrifice some pieces of GFX you won't need and make e.g. yellow stars which you randomly place on the ground. If you're a perfectionist, make a distorted/colourly weakened version and place it on the water - "underwater".

I liked the Level Design, but the graphics in the "Atma X" levels (I'm calling them that because they're ripped from Atma X's hack, arent they?) look out of place with the other graphics...

Why?

Almost 70% of the people who replied are....not dumb, but...just...not wise. You can't play through 3 somewhat bad levels and say the game is bad, can you? I wouldn't be surprised if almost none of you played through Chucklehuck Woods. Chucklehuck Woods 5 is a cool, very long underwater level, and Chucklehuck Woods 4 is just plain awesome (the ground, it's...oh, don't want to spoil it). Play through THAT and tell me what you think.

That weird message is supposed to create suspense....it'll be used later in the game.

I'm not releasing any more demos, becuase I know I'm just going to get replies from people who just played 1 level and called it bad. I'll continue to release demos at my website (in my signature), once the "other stuff" section gets put up, but no more demos here.

No actual levels were ripped from Atma X's hack, just the graphics.

Yes... I... Fucking... Can. Sorry if you don't like it, but, what the hell is my incentive to keep playing if the first levels are terrible? With all the good hacks out there, a hack had better have a good start if it hopes to compete. If it sucks, I'll just stop playing and go play a different hack.

That's funny, because almost everyone I know hates long underwater levels. That's why I only have a handful in the entire game.

Once again. If the first level sucks no one will want to play on unless they happen to know for certain it gets better. And I can fairly confidently say from the screenshots you gave people aren't going to think that. Why are the boulders just sitting in the air? And that checkerboard background is just plain obnoxious.

EDIT: So I decided to play through more. The game passes the time, I guess, but unfortunately I see no signs of it getting better. The secret exit for Hoohoo mountain 2 is terrible. You just don't make the player just down random edges until they find the secret, you hear? You give some kind of hint. I really don't like this level, mmk?

Green Switch Palace: Nice job on making it impossible to pass with Yoshi without glitching through.

Hoohoo mountain three... What the hell was that Yoshi doing at the start? I already had Yoshi, and frankly I did not like having my Yoshi glitch up. In the second area, you have to have a cape to pass with Yoshi. That's somewhat alright, because you still CAN. But, what were the boulders doing sitting in the air like that? Seriously, that's just stupid. And the level design was unforgiving, even though it was easy, and I just didn't like it.

The castle: Augh! The background, it scratches my eyes!

First level of the new area: Let my start by asking what, exactly, you were thinking with that one-space gap leading in to a pit. You cannot pass that with Yoshi at alll and if you mess up on sliding through when you're big you'll fall off the edge. I stopped playing here. And the overworld... What was the world three castle doing there? There's nothing from stopping you from just walking through... That's just plain bad overworld design, to force the player to take the long route. You have to give a REASON, it's just dumb

EDIT2: Your overworld paths are far too long and pointless. It makes going between levels something of a chore. And, there was a level with green spikes. You could skip a good section by flying before those green spikes up through the floor of the upper area. And also, those green spikes... They shouldn't kill you. That's just mean. You never say anything about it, I had yoshi and was planning on using them to extend my running distance before flying. But no, instead, I died. Now THERE'S good design

I've also been getting farther.. Personally, I think that your hack ahs a bit too much graphics diversity... Try to limit each world to one graphics set.

Also, the levels do get better (ie, well designed) as you go on.. just redesign some of the earlier ones and you should be fine.

I played through it in about a half an hour. It's not bad, but I won't reitterate what everyone else said. Just fix it up a bit, and no more one screen levels! Augh!
