Congrats! I graduate next year, I think I'll just give myself some free time for about a year or two after that and then go to college if I can.

Yes, yo learn a lot though person projects, and working (if you can GET a computer job) but you will not learn as much nor more than if you were to learn it in school. I'm not talking experience, but the things you can learn. I considerd my self to be pretty adept with computers before I started post secondary school, studing for the IT field. and yes there was a lot of stuff I already knew, but I learned so much more in class than I would have learned in the same amount of time or more at a job. Experience is just not the same as an education, and employers will tell you the same. Ultimatly it is your choice, but if I were in your shoes, I'd start post secondary school in the fall. Or at the last, in the winter if you get a good job for the summer. You don't get second chances at this stuff. (edited by Yarx on 06-05-04 06:16 PM) |

I pick working instead of going to school because I believe that I can get a great deal of experience in three years. My plan includes going to courses on weekends or evenings (or through work; any employer good enough to want some education from me will also realize growth potential in employees and will send you to courses) eventually, but I'd rather build a foundation first, and that includes getting a job ASAP. Going to school for three years (while ofcourse meriting and a learning experience) is not ASAP. I have made a personal judgement that I know enough stuff to be broad (many languages/techniques) and yet above average at most of them. I also learn new stuff very fast. Any employer not realizing the potential in that after a fair interview and some good tests doesn't know the business good enough to have my attention. It should also be noticed that I'm in a unique position. I can work freelance and build web sites and the like, or work full-time either as a dedicated programmer or as the "computer guy" in a company. I certainly have many choices beyond going to school, and a good opportunity to rack up experience pretty easily. In case someone's wondering about my grades not being good enough, I ended HALF of my classes with the highest possible grade. I didn't fail one class, and I attended about 99% of the classes, including sick days. |

I think Jesper's plan is pretty solid, but only because he's shown that he knows his way around quite a few languages. Part-time student + decent paying job = improving your skills = success.

I graduated too, as Kwan said. I may have some pictures sometime, but they're bleh anyway. I'm gonna continue with my education, most likely it'll be Computer Engineer somewhere in sweden. It feels like a little holiday though, almost like I'm waiting to go back again. Had some cool teachers (and friends) that I'll miss :\ Jesper, what's your average? |

Congratuations to Jesper and Jizuko on graduating. I also just recently graduated from high school. It took place about a week ago and I felt really good once I got that diploma in my hand. I am also gonna continue with my education. I am going to start college next month at a technical school called Collins College and I am going to major in Game Design. Some of my friends think it is dumb to continue on with my education so soon but this will be somthing I actually want to do. Jesper, good luck and hopefully, you become very successful in your ventures. |

I wore a dress on Jizuko's graduation. That counts as atleast something to be equally praised for XD (Jesper, if you do have the possibility to start on a job, and in one of your posts you said you had several, you should go for it. I know you got some brains between your ears, and you're cocky enough to get through in the working part of life. I started university when I graduated, and it was the most overrated and boring thing IMO, after 12 years of schooling <<; I commend anyone who gets through such boredom, but damn, you're lucky if you can get a job now, instead of very likely getting a similar job in 3 or 4 years.) Now show me your dorky hat. edit: reread it. Ignore my rambling between brackets. (edited by Sofie on 06-07-04 03:53 PM) |
