I think all the guides back in the day recommended a minimum of 20 to beat the Dragonlord.

How, I'm not quite sure.

And I had used a fair portion of Healmores on my way to the Dragonlord, which hurt my cause.

Neko: Nope, that would be Darkfalz from Phantasy Star (You may know him better by his correctly-translated-in-the-rest-of-the-series name of Dark Force).

I thought 23 was the minimum, but as I recall... I went in at around 25 and beat him.

Never did find the sword in the castle though... I just used the Flame Sword. Still does the trick.

Geez, this thread's reminding me to pick up Phantasy Star again. It's regarded as the best SMS game but I can't make it past the first few levels.

The flip image of Dragon Warrior, no doubt.

Yeah, Phantasy Star was rough in the early going. And there were some quirks in the programming too...I noticed that armor seems to have no effect on the damage enemies do to you.

In spite of that, it's probably my favorite RPG ever. Maybe because I really wanted to enjoy it, but I've never had more fun with an RPG than I did playing through that.

TIP: Make getting the Iron Sword (The 75GP one, I think it's Iron) your first priority. Makes the early stages MUCH easier.

Same with the Copper Sword in DW.

...Of course, that's only if DW was your first RPG and you had no experience with them before.

I think armor works. At least on the GBA version.

Yeah, but watch what happens to the damage the Sworms do to you as you gain levels. It actually INCREASES. Or at least it did in the original, they may have fixed that in the GBA.

Of course, if fixing that came at the price of the "OOPS u saved at the rong tiem SAY BYE 2 UR HOURS OF WERK LOLOLOL!1!!1" glitch being introduced...I'll take the armor quirk any day.

And I'll just throw out that DW was my first RPG. I played it at age....6, I think it was. With a lot of help from the family, of course, but still.

That might just be a really bad programming flaw.

Yeah, I heard that PSC has some... saving issues... So I'll just stick to the originals, thank you very much.

DW was my first RPG but to hell with any help. I got it BEFORE Nintendo Power started giving away all those copies too. I beat it twice for sure... Once normally and once at Level 30. (Yeah, I maxed out levels then.)

Actually I think the increasing damage was so the game doesnt get uber easy at level (30, I think was the highest you could get)

And as long as you dont save when the music is in the process of looping, you're fine

Yeah, but if you don't know when the song loops since you're in a new area or something... uh-oh.

I'm sure the armor worked but either it was a flaw or they just wanted to ramp up the difficulty. Of course, then some programmers found out that it was easier to just diminish the amount of EXP you get from weak opponents, but...

Yeah...it was a very strange way of calculating damage, though, either way.

In any event: I made it to Dracolord in the GBC version today. His first form is a lot harder than on the NES ("That 115 damage Critical Hit on the second round didn't kill him? What the...HEALMORE?!"). Then his second form flamed me to death before I ever got a spell off. I was level 18. Oh well.

Didn't have much of a problem with DW1 GBC.

If anything, EXP gain's great. If you can handle it, just walk around the final castle. 2-3 levels in no time.

Bah, wasn't the entire POINT of the Dragonlord that he's a weak loser? Then you kill without any trouble, laugh at his sorry ass.. and then he transforms into a huge dragon that murders you in half a second.

And yeah, with the best equipment, you can beat him at level 20.

PSC saved perfectly for me. At least PS1, haven't played the others yet.

That's what I thought too, Adamant. Apparently Enix changed their philosophy on that between 1989 and 2000 (The GBC release). It was actually hard enough that I was like "Geez, maybe I won't have to fight the second form....nope, there he is. Oh look, he's attacking first...so much for that Healmore."

And PS2 and 3 save fine; it's just PS1 that has the problem.

Maybe they fixed it in the european version. That's the one I have.
