So earlier tonight, as my dad was using the TV with our new game systems hooked up to it, and my brother was on the computer, I decided to head to our spare room for some NES action. The game I chose to play was Dragon Warrior. So I loaded up my old Level 21 file where I'd beaten the game, and started for the Dragonlord's Castle, Charlock.

I make it without much trouble, and even manage to basically remember the way to the Dragonlord. What I failed to remember, however, is that this was during the days when the last boss was actually the hardest enemy in the game. I got a quick lesson in this when I beat hid first form and was greeted with: "The Dragonlord revealed its true form! The Dragonlord attacked before ZAPPER was ready." as he proceeded to knock off a third of my life.

Suffice to say that I lost this battle. But good.

So, anyone else ever get a shock like this? Where you come back to a game after several years and realize "hey, this wasn't as easy as I thought it'd be!" ?

Not a HUGE shock, but about a year ago I sat down with SMB2j (Lost Levels), which I enjoyed back in the day. First few levels went by all right, but as soon as I hit the wind levels... OW. It's like I needed a few minutes to get my sense of timing back, and even then it wasn't perfect.

Dragonlord's not too much of a problem if you have a few more levels though. Beating it at 21 is pretty impressive.

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure how I did it, unless it was one of those files wherein I got to the end of the game and just never beat it (I'm rather notorious for this, actually, although I HAVE actually beaten DW 1). I honestly don't know. Oh well.

Yeah.

Although, it was more like a half year break. I did this with KOTOR...I forgot how hard the last boss was <.<

This occured again with me playing PGR, as I forgot how bitchy the physics can be.

This caused me to quit playing online games entirely, as I had forgotten how annoying the other people online were.

One example of a difficult game that you forget about, Duck Hunt. I remember loving it as a kid. I also remember sucking at it three weeks ago.

One moment that stuck out to me was when I fired up Mega Man 2 a week ago or so, and wondering to myself exactly how I made all those jumps in Air Man's level as my young self.

Actually, the other day i plugged in DW 1, and yes even with my max level character, i found it suprisingly difficult to beat the last boss again, (tho it did take me several tries i did beat him.)

I have several unfinished game files lying around. Way too many things going on at one time.

Mega Man 2, there's another one... It takes a while to get used to Quick Man's stage again. And Heat Man if you choose to use the blocks.

Quick Man's stage = TEH SATAN. It took me about a billion tries to figure out how to make it through there using the Time Stopper. I still don't understand how people can get past all the beams without that item. I could handle most of the rooms (you had to - one charge wasn't enough for all of them), but I never got that one where you have to go left on the bottom level with 2 beams coming at you from the left. It always seemed impossible because those beams would always start by the time I got to the bottom, so I could never sneak past them. I'd get through the first few screens and save my Time Stopper for that part.

I screwed up. I had stopped after trying to beat the boss several times. My character was light side consouller with all dark side abilities. You see, I was an idiot. This mega messed me up. But next time, it won't be so, and I'm going to DESTROY the game. Now, I only need to go through it as female light and dark side, and male dark side.

Rydain - The problem was that even IF you used the Time Stopper on the second portion, the enemies before Quick Man's gate don't drop weapon pellets that often. So it takes you 10 minutes to recharge it, if you're lucky.

And you NEED that Time Stopper for Quick Man, because he is one fast and cheap robot.

There was one room in Quick Man's stage I tended to have trouble with, and I think it's the one Rydain described (Where you have to jump to the left over/onto a platform). The rest wasn't too bad, with practice.

In any event, I never had much trouble with Darkfalz, though that was because I was up 4-5 levels higher than my cousin, who found it very difficult.

Anyone ever have the opposite happen? Where you come back to something after a long layoff and say "Why did I ever find this so hard?"

Yeah, most of Earthbound. Specifically Frank, Peacefull Rest Valley, the cave between Threed and Saturn Valley, the base behind Grapefruit falls, the mines, the department store, the pyramids in Scaraba, Magicant, and the final battle.

I remember that I didn't know about PSI when I first played, and that beating Frank was hard. I don't know how far into the game I got without knowing about PSI, actually.

Maybe I should try a low-level or no-PSI game of it.

The first Zelda seems harder than I remembered. I think I was too little to mind the tedium of much of that game. It can't be a skill thing, since I can do good at much more difficult games, like, say, Demon's Crest.

I played Megaman 2 a few days ago and did Quick Man first ... and beat it (and I'm not even that good in Megaman games)

And the Dragonlord is very well beatable on Level 21, I've done it ... but that's almost the bare minimum for it ...

I also get that feeling when I look back at my Mario hacks after a few years, and have more trouble beating my own levels than I used to ... but with other games I played long ago, there isn't much I can think of ...

I think it's possible to beat Dragonlord at level 20, but I've never done it. He's not that hard at level 21, just cast Healmore once your HP gets low, and he should eventually die.

As for Quick Man, just use Time Stopper for the seond part of his stage, and bring an E-tank for the boss. There are enough E-tanks in Wily's castle anyway, and you wont need them on any other levels.

I've played Mega Man 2 enough that I've pretty much got Quick Man's stage down without using Time Stopper. I just have to remember the screen ahead so I can know how to fall.

I got my ass handed to me before I even began playing Dragon Warrior. I bought the cartridge about 6 years ago from a pawn shop for $1 (big loss eh?). It worked for about 4 seconds. I saw the mythical title screen, started the game, and then the thing pooped out. I tried resetting and kept getting a fragmented picture of the title screen. After several tries I just gave up.

BTW Megaman levels can be evil sometimes. I still say the hardest one is the first one.
