Which would you rather have while watching your anime?

I'm a fan of subs. You get so much more out of it. The american versions of certain animes, are just weak when you watch them in dub.

perfer subs, but i don't really care either way, unless the dub is atrocious and does it no justice.

I pick... both! At the same time!

On my Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro DVD, I can set it to have the English dubbing playing for the sound, with the subtitles for the Japanese version at the bottom. By watching it like that, I'm getting the most out of it. I'm seeing the ideas that the original Japanese one was getting across, and I'm seeing in what ways the English one has been altered. It's actually quite fun.

Whatever. I can watch either. I usually try the dub out first and then watch it sub afterward. There are a couple of exceptions though, I've never seen Vampire Hunter D subbed because the sub isn't on my DVD, and I always watch Trigun dubbed because I think its one of the best anime dubs around.

Gah, it's complete ignorance when people rant "You can never be an Otaku if you don't watch subbed animes." Personally I could really care less. I prefer dubbed, just for the fact I like to just sit and watch an anime and not have to read it, and understand what they're saying. But if you like subbed, again I personally don't care. Either way is alright, I just hate it when people bash both ways, mostly dubbed...

That's pretty much how I am.

When I first started watching anime, I hated subs. It just didn't make any sense to me. Why would you want to miss what's going on while reading?

But these past few years, in which I've spent downloading anime that hasn't came out over here, I've gotten use to subs. It's not as bad as people say. You can easily read the subtitles and still see what's going on.

That, and I refuse to watch certain titles dubbed. For instance, there's no way I can watch Hellsing and .hack//sing dubbed because the voices are HORRID!

subs 100% for me...i'll never watch an anime dubbed on my own free will ever again..i like the original japanese simply because (1) i'm gradually understanding it (2) the americanization process never goes anything right and lastly, (3) the dignity of the anime is preserved...

two classic cases where the the dignity of the anime was lost: Sailor Moon and Cardcaptors

Subs... Sailor Moon ruined dubs for me, lol. The dubbed voices tend to really bother me too, usually... they're always so different than the originals, and seem so I dunno, overly exaggerated, forced almost. It annoys me. So yeah.

If it's possible: Sub, or I don't watch it.
the same with other Movies and Series, 'cause Dubs don't really get you the content, like the original directors intendet too.

But if the Subs bad, then I rather wach it in Original, no dub, nu sub.

Subs, because like mentioned already, dubs usually have bad voice acting, bad translations, and stuff gets left out sometimes. So subs it is.

Some english cartoons get's dubbed here, but I always prefer the orginal.

Heh, i'm so used at subs. All english movies we show have sub so I am used to them and they don't annoy me.

Hmm, well maybe I should give a subbed anime a chance, that way I could see anime earlier than when it gets dubbed.

Subs, only I wish that they'd put most of them at the top of the screen... I hate staring at the very bottom.

Some?

The Simpsons, Futurama and South Park are the only cartoons I know of that are subbed.

I remember Animaniacs and Tiny Toons being subbed (Freakazoid was dubbed, damn it all to hell) back in the day those were airing every week (10 years ago or something), as well as Looney Tunes, which might still be.

And Asterix might've been subbed. Not sure.

Every other animated show is dubbed.

And yeah, you get used to reading subtitles if you live in a non-english speaking country, since every live-action show and movie is subbed ('cept in Germany. They dub everything, and it sounds horrible)

As for the anime question.. Hate dubbing in general, and it's pretty much impossible to say something the same way in english as in japanese. And, um, yeah.

Sub good, dub bad.

Ugh... Both Dubs and Subs are fine. Hell, I've seen quite a few dubs that are much better than subs.

I really wish people wouldn't just slag off dubs because they've seen a couple of bad ones. It's this kind of attitude that breeds the elitest anime fans that ruin the scene.

Of course, it'd be hard to put across exactly the same meaning from Japanese to English, because of the social and historical contexts, but unless the plot is directly tied to these then it doesn't matter.

For goodness sake, anime shows and productions tell a story, and I don't think any one language can get anywhere near close enough to describing some things.
I'm sorry to say this, but that includes English and Japanese.

People who complain about subtle differences, such as the controversial End of Evangelion translation, should shut the hell up. Go download some DivXs where the translation describes one thing, and then something completely different happens. We're lucky we have them in English at all, and unless you know Japanese, you're not going to pick up on alot of the extremely subtle hints that can't be emphasised in words.

Having said that, there are also abismal dubs... Hellsing and Ghost in the Shell are the worst offenders... Personally, my favorite dubs are for Trigun and Evangelion. Also, to balance out, I love the Ranma 1/2 OAVs and Macross Plus Japanese Dubs.

So, as long as the language is accurate, the sync is pretty good, and the voice actors aren't horribly mismatched, you can learn alot from both dubs and subs.

So, next time you get a title that offers subs and dubs, watch both, and then decide.

Subs, as the only dubs I've really watched are mostly 4kids, and...well, what can I say? 4kids ruins everything it can get its rich little hands on.

Oh, I'll watch the dubs. I'm watching Inuyasha and Witch Hunter Robin dubbed currently and they don't seem too bad. I think they did a pretty good job dubbing Spirited Away, best dub I've seen thus far. But when offered a choice I'd choose subbed, that's all.
