I bought a "new" hard drive roughly 1.5 years ago. I say "new" because it didn't work from the start. I let it collect dust for about 8 months then sent it in to be repaired. was ecstatic since it meant going from 2gb to 42gb of hard drive space. However when I write to this storage drive, windows lags in proportion to how large the file/data is. For instance if I have WinMX open an I download files at 100+ Kb/s or so there is a very noticeable slowdown. Writing a 100Mb file alone could make it stall for a 30 seconds. Now this doesn't occur with the 2gb drive I have installed as my C drive.

Does anybody know how to look into fixing this? It's a Maxtor drive and I've tried both tech support from my school and the company and neither have been very helpful. I've run the maxtor utilities and they didn't seem to help. I figure it's something in the BIOS I need to fiddle with, but I'm afraid if I do fiddle foolishly I'll lose all my data.

Um, you should have immediatley returned it to the vendor. Whoops, your bad.

Either the replacement drive is fucked, or your PC can't handle larger capacity drives, which is likely considering that your PC has a 2GB drive...

If the 2GB and 40GB drive are on the same IDE cable, it MUST be an ATA33 connection (The connection is downgraded to that of the slowest drive). Take your 2GB piece of shit out, use an ATA66/100/133 cable (80 wires as opposed to 40), and see if that helps.

The 2gb drive is a relic from my old computer. It's the only old part to survive. At least it functions properly. I don't get any slow downs when copying large files to it, so I don't think that's the problem Yiffy Kitten.

The reason I let the drive sit around in the first place was because I was in the process of upgrading my old computer and wasn't sure if the drive was the problem or the computer was the problem. When I got the new computer (bought last March) I determined that the drive was faulty. It's the same drive too. Not a replacement.

Don't get me wrong. This problem is liveable. I've been dealing with it for half a year now, trying to research the problem when I had time. I'm not going to replace the drive just to fix this. I just want to know if anyone knows a bit about hard drive settings that might help me out. I'm pretty sure they're not on the same IDE cable. I'm going back to school tomorrow and I'll see my computer then. Then i can give some more details.

Actually, the cable likely CAN BE the problem!

Newer HDs are designed for ATA66/ATA100/ATA133 cables. When using an ATA33 connection, they REALLY LAG. BADLY. They aren't designed to be 100% backwards compatible as it would cost a lot of higher-end performance.
