I've been developing a SMB3 hack even before all my SMW ones, but never really shared it until now. This demo has 5 worlds. The difficulty is moderate, although 4-2 is hard. Read the readme for more information.

UGH! I'd love to try your hack really badly. It's just that I'm in the process of coming up with my own, and I want to wait until that's done before I try to patch other things to the ROM. I have exactly 2 worlds finished (thanks to some awesome help from DarkDhaiz). I don't plan on releasing my hack until it's all done, but hey, I look forward to playing yours once we're both finished. Did you make the levels from scratch, or just rearrange them?

I want as much stuff in the levels as possible, so I just rearanged them. If you make a freeform level it has to be smaller or the same size as the original.

it looks ok, except for some of the little gfx glitches I see...other then that it looks pretty good. theres only 2 glitches I see, the Treasure boxes, and the one of the world map, level ones blue arrow is missing.

Well I'll come right out and say it, the title screen sucks. The rest looks nice, though some of the BGs are painful.

Yes, I really don't know where each 8x8 tile is placed in the title screen. I tried editing it, but it came out all messed up......

And why aren't any of you commenting on the actual hack? I want to know what you guys think of the hack itself!!!!!!!!!!!

yyaaaaaaaaaaayyyy a 5 world smb3 hack to play! The blocks in the fortress pic have a weird optical illusion effect on me It makes me feel like the level is trying to spin. At any rate, I'm totally gonna try this sucker as soon as I return Mario Sunshine to Blockbuster .

The hack's a little glitchy, purposely (a la Strange Mario 3), or not.

Some pipes I go down freeze up the screen or drop me into the star-background ground-less level of death. The card/You got a card! text is sometimes off, the camera doesn't scroll at critical points sometimes, and blahblahblah...

But the hack is pretty good, glitches aside though. I like what you've done with the backgrounds and stuff (Castle = cool funkyness).

Remove the graphical fuckups and the horrible backgrounds [coughcastle] and it might look ... somewhat ... playable. The blocks are nice, though.

DarkDaiz: That's intentional. I noticed that, and I thought it made the level a bit more fun to play.

MajinBlueDragon: Palette problems? I think they're nice enough, and besides these screenshots show only the first 4 levels. I've made a total of 69 screenshots, and I didn't have time to upload them all.

XKeeper: That was a tad rude, because it is very playable, but I admit the fortress background is a bit too intense. I'll fix that for the next release.

Also, PLEASE PLAY THE HACK BEFORE YOU GIVE COMMENTS ON IT!!!!

I KNOW what I'm doing. I will now tell you the reason behind all of the weird palettes.

1. 1-4 is meant to be a level where summer is just turning to fall. That's why the things are half green and half orange.

2. 1-5 is a sort of "golden sunset" level.

3. All of the weird palettes in world 3 are stupidly made, intentionally, because it's a (oops, read the readme if you don't want to be spoiled at what world 3 is!)

4. 5-6 (or was it 5-7) is a sort of late sunset level, explaining the pale red tint to things.

More comments, anyone?

Just got through playing what I could.

Attention viewers with weak stomachs: Please exercise caution.


Should you play through the level [it's to the left of #1] ... it's the exact same minus some pallete changes. Absolutely no changes whatsoever minus a pallete. Whoopdiefuckingdo.


What the fuck? Look at the ground and that wierd blob above Mario... the hell?
I might also mention that this level starts on bad footing-- the ground you start on is the type without a top, so you can't jump, only slide.


This one wasn't too bad; minor glitch.


As said before- your pallete suuucks. Fix the fuggin thing


Cheap trick. Considering that those statues were used liberally in the castle and only about half of them shot lasers [Bowser's, not this] it was a bit unexpected and a really cheap way to kill off a player.


Another mysteriously colored blob that used to be a thwomp.


Try and find Boomboom. Not easy, is it? Arrgh... I'm so wanting to quit now...


Fish out of water. Here's a tip: DON'T GO DOWN THE PIPE. Well, you can, if you want to die... it's an actual verticle one, so going through one will take you right into that plant- quick and painless?


Arrgh. Not quite as bad, but the vine sprite was dark green.


What the fuck.


That row of question blocks should be replaced with actual ground, you know. Anothe ridea would just scrap the ending small hill and make the / portion continue up; it looks like shit.


God help me. Question blocks ARE NOT GROUND. ALso, the area just to the left has 4 plants in a row, one of which is hanging off the edge. Pipes, at least here... gah. Oh, I shouldn't forget to mention


THIS absolutely WONDERFUL piece of artwork- not only can you fall through the ground here [I did once] but should you manage to get to the star...

Unfortunately I was standing over the sprite when I took this, but you get the idea. It's like every other one in the sense that the poor thing's glitched to hell =( Sprite abuser...


Another shot of it. Here's a tip: That's not actually what it is [a platform]. It's more like a sort of red-paragoomba, with the way it bounces, but it's not... ...hm...


Should you grab this...


...you get this! Lovely, absolutely lovely. I got a car!

Should you manage to get to the end of World 1 [the last level, anyway] you're greeted with a giant hammer brother and a pipe that goes far beyond the top of the viewable screen. I tried searching for a hidden box to no avail; trying to jump on him's suicide anyway, way to go. Should you kill him and not make it [if you even can] you lose anyway, an dyou have to sit there until time runs out.

Also, don't go down any pipe you see unless it's a dead end. There's a 99.9% chance it'll kill you.

Here's how I rank this trash bucket.


Levels: 5/100. Glitchy and crappy.
Colors: 0/100. [stabs eyes]
GFX: 25/100. Assuming they don't fuck up, they're okay. Granted, they almost always do.


The original SMB3 ranks 50 on all to give you an idea where these go.

I have to agree with X...Kitten... this hack is kinda bad. I like the effort you gave into making the levels not look the same, but they're not very well design, and the graphics are just plain awful, it woulda been better to rip other graphics that. The enemy palettes seem rather bad too. I couldn't bare to play more than 3 levels. Maybe you should go back and restart this hack, or polish it up real nice and pretty.

Good lord. From the screenshot that hack is horrible! For christ's sake fix all those bloody glitches! And don't play around with the GFX unless you're an expert on GFX hacking. Just don't.

you have to fix those glitches and paletes. piranha plants aren't acceptable in grounds or blocks

and glitched sprites aren't nice

and fix those 'pipes of doom' that take mario to a painful death by a piranha hit in his ass
