You can't achieve the exact table border effect with css to my knowledge. But you can add a similar border: ridge.

For the above:
<table style="border: 6px ridge red; padding: 8; color: black">

Edit: ridge is alot darker in IE than in other browsers.

Cool, that looks about right. Not quite the same but nobody'll notice. I just noticed another problem, though...

Whostole
myborders?

The inside borders don't seem to be showing up.

What you need to do is add some stylish stuff.

Hereare
theborders!

<style>#hhexample {border-top: 6px purple ridge; border-left: 6px purple ridge} #hhexample td {border-right: 6px purple ridge; border-bottom: 6px purple ridge; color: black}</style><table cellspacing=0 cellpadding=3 id=hhexample> <tr><td>Here</td><td>are</td></tr><tr><td>the</td><td>borders!</td></tr></table>

This way, the main table has a top and left border. Each cell fills in with a bottom and right border.

Not more of a help request more than a general feedback attempt. Just wanted to see how a few people liked this. If you recall the whole La Pucelle: Tactics layout scheme that I used for several layouts (Colleen still uses Culotte's theme, for instance) then you know where it's from. I usually don't go too far out with my layouts that often anymore, but I usually try to keep them pretty simplistic. If you aren't seeing the images right now (I heard some are still not seeing my server being back on) I didn't have anywhere else to UL it currently.

User pic is an easy 60x60 slash and pack. The minipic isn't related, but I worked on it for an hour or so for about 25-30 frames from scratch.

Anyways, guess I should show a few things off.

Text will go here and whoever I quote and whatnot. HRs are demonstrated. Look okay? It's not too much different than the original background but the color's back is changed a bit.

A link. It slices, it dices!

And that's about it. Anything I should change or maim?

The link color is a little light...try darkening the grey a bit.

Looks good otherwise.

Both seem a bit light, really.

Is it possible to center the background on the window? I was hoping to have a fixed background in the middle of the window, but I'm having quite a few problems.

body {
background-color: #000000;
background: url(../images/galaxy.jpg);
background-position: center center;
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-attatchment: fixed;
}

The background shows up, but it's not in the middle of the window but rather the middle of the page; you have to scroll exactly halfway down for it to be in the middle. Even worse, the background colour is white despite that I specified black!

Also, can I have 2 backgrounds? Like that one in the middle, and a smaller one that repeats to fill in the rest of the space? (Yes I know this would suck for dialup... I've set up a style selector, so you only end up downloading the big BG images if you actually want them. )

Bleh. Works though.

Anyways, if you name it 'body' then that's your problem. It'll mess with the CSS of the page. Try naming it something different and class the object with that name. As for two backgrounds, no. Not that I'm aware of...unless you merged two objects and had a background on one object and a background on another, but two in one, as far as I know, you can't have.

So in the center and around case, you'd have something like my old layout: centered window inside with a background and then the primary would have a it's own background, both different class defines.

There you go. I don't know why the background doesn't show up in my post, it does otherwise. But just quote me and take the code, put it in your layout and see if it works, does here anyway. And I'm sure you can tinker with stuff like border color yourself, I just took something that wasn't black so you can see it.
Oh and when specifying links, don't just write "a { bla bla}" that overwrites all links on the board. Instead, do like I did on your code above, "#unsurpasseddarkness a { bla bla }". That will only work for your postlayout then.

That goes for EVERYONE, with ANY stylesheet changes. If you don't specify that it's only for your layout your style applies to everything.

Oh, except you should use class="whatever" instead of id="whatever" and use dot (.) instead of pound (#). That's because an element with a certain ID is only supposed to occur once per page, which isn't the case if you post more than once in the same page of a thread. Browser behavior in that case is undefined. So use dots and classes instead of pounds and ids.

But if you have the same name on an id in a postlayout and post several times in a thread you most likely have the same css on all the posts so it doesn't really matter. Even though id's for stylesheets is discouraged, I like to use it. It's easier to type and I like # more than .

Uh, you can try and add height:100%; on the place where it has width:100%; but I'm not sure if it'll work.
And no, transperancy won't work, it's not supported by any browser except IE, if you want transperancy you have to make a little gif which would imitate transperancy such as the one in my layout.
