Exactly. Only the ASM hackers have decent bearings now, that's why my hack is gonna a MUCH different style from other hacks.

Originally posted by asdfYou are COMPLETELY wrong. Look at this hack: http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=1970 It doesn't sucks. There are more hacks we know it doesn't suck like Sendy World, SRP2, the new one from GoldenYoshi. There are also the great japanese hackers with hacks like SunnySide and Luigi's Adventure....and they are still releasing new versions. Yeah, most of the hacks sucks, but it's not 99% of them. So stop whining because other editors can't make asm stuff and move on . |

You guys should all say thank you to FuSoYa each and every day for making an editor that a five year old could make a decent hack with Now, there are SOME SMW hacks I like, such as the SMW+ series (#4 and #5 have very very unique plots) and BMF's looks like it will be classic. But I'm just sayin for the most part, they suck because people who can't hack or design levels or whatever are trying to hack it because the editor is so friggin easy to use. |

I don't know about SMW hacking anymore. There are so many high expectations now. I don't think I could ever learn to do .0000001 % of anything hackers such as BMF, Fu, Hyperhacker, FPI, etc. can do. So, I kind of have to agree, ASM hackers will probably have the strongest standing now. Only time will tell what will happen to hackers such as myself though, but I hope for the best...

I've been reading this thread (saw the Dhark Daiz's sig first and checked this out). SMW hacks really only need one thing: good level design. Why most (and why I don't download them anymore hardly) SMW hacks suck is because the level design is horrible. I don't need to specific, but let's just say, glitches. When editing any game, make sure you know how the game is supposed function. I lot of coins through a hill won't overlap it like you think. It's going to cut right into it. That's my biggest complaint. Golden Yoshi, BMF, and the Japanese hacks are the best ones I've seen (and the only ones I really download). I know to expect good level design with Golden Yoshi and I've been keeping an eye on BMF's hack as well (looks really good). The Japanese hacks are all about new graphics (if the graphics are better than level design, I still love the graphics of those guys hacks). Man, I'm just on a big rant like some others... I'll just post this and be done. Make a SMW hack you are proud of. If you are, others may. Trying to whip something together to say "hey, I'm a hacker" is not going to be something I want to play. Side note, the last SMW hack I played was in February from the Japanese guys, the one before that was The Legend Continues. |

... Agreed. Although, I tend to not like Japanese hacks. I have only played a few, but in every one, the graphics didn't fit was around it at all. They would've been perfectly fine had they changed the sprite graphics, but, they didn't, only the background and foreground. I have the same problem with almost all American hacks, though those tend to have worse level design, as well.

Originally posted by Chill Penguin I agree. Most hacks just concentrate on graphics. Level design is the last thing some hackers care about. Just because your graphics are superb doesn't mean that the hack is fun or the level design is good. I can get bored of a hack easily if I see cool graphics being used improperly or used the same way over and over throughout the level. And the worse thing, they say that is their best level! That really makes me mad! Most hacks could be good, but they show really bad design bringing the rating down from a 9/10 to a 4/10... in my opinion. Graphics don't make a hack good. Original level design with a little bit of hex editing can make a hack stand out of the crowd. |

I can't believe how unimaginative some people seem! You have to know super 1337 ASM to make a hack stand out or produce something worthwhile? Level design possiblities are almost exhausted? Are you mad?! No offence to anyone who said that, not trying to be a poser or anything... But the level design possible with LM+SMW is practically limitless, and has hardly been touched!. It's more of a platform game construction kit than a SMW editor. Change the gravity and all the graphics and bam! it's a different game! You should see what some people do to 8 bit games like Jet Set Willy, as far as platform games go, JSW is a stamp and SMW is a football field, yet people are still doing innovative things with JSW, with or without hacking knowledge (a flair for design and some learned tech skills are all you need). |

You make a good point, Sendy. There are so many drastic changes being made to SMW, that it is being transferred into a completely different game, which seems to defeat the purpose of SMW hacking. I'm not saying that all these advancements in GFX editing and ASM are a bad thing, they're very good and I'm excited to see what these hackers will produce. However, these types of hacks shouldn't be overly prominent, they should be equally recognized as hacks with killer level design. Now, if the hack has exceptional ASM hacking, superb GFX, and terrific level design, then that's a great achievement. However, great level design should also be commended. |
